NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor… The St. James Hotel in the 300 block of Magazine Street is one of New Orleans' luxurious boutique hotels. Located in the historic Banks’ Arcade, a three-story structure built by Thomas Banks in 1833, it is also home to the highly acclaimed Restaurant Cuvée. The first St. James Hotel was also situated in the Banks' Arcade, once the center of the Caribbean coffee and sugar trade in the 19th century. It had a glass-roofed court combined with an auction mart, a saloon and commercial features very much like a modern office building. Banks’ Arcade gained its renown as witness to one of the pivotal moments of the Texas Revolution. On October 13, 1835, powerful representatives of New Orleans mercantile houses met there and backed the Texian forces against General Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón, better known simply as Santa Anna. As a result, capital from the Crescent City ($250,000 in loans), along with New Orleans men and arms (two companies known as the New Orleans Greys), were sent to support Stephen Austin and others in Texas’ fight for independence. Recognizing the importance of securing both popular and financial support from New Orleans, this important group of financiers and businessmen formed the Committee on Texas Affairs. The New Orleans Greys took their name from their city of origin and the color of the uniforms they would wear. The members of the two companies formed that day would go on to write their names large across the battlefields of Texas, taking heavy losses at the Battles of Bexar, the Alamo and Goliad. -

The Alamo 1836 Santa Anna's Texas Campaign STEPHEN L. HARDIN is a professor of history at The Victoria College in Victoria, Texas. He is the author of the award-winning Texian Iliad: A Military History of the Texas Revolution, 1835-1836 and Elite 36: The Texas Rangers. Additionally, he is the editor of Lone Star: The Republic of Texas, 1836-1846 and is the author of more than a dozen scholarly articles published on both sides of the Atlantic. When not engaged in the classroom, he appears regularly as a commentator on American television. Distinguished for his readable style and accessible approach, Dr. Hardin is an inductee of the prestigious Texas Institute of Letters and is a member of Western Writers of America. ANGUS MCBRIDE, one of the world's most respected historical illustrators, has contributed to more than 70 Osprey titles over the past 25 years. Born in 1931 of Highland parents but orphaned as a child, he received a musical education at Canterbury Cathedral Choir School in 1940-45. He worked in advertising agencies from 1947, and is a self-taught artist. After national service in the Royal Fusiliers, 1949-51, in 1953 Angus emigrated to South Africa. He came back to the UK in 1961, and has worked freelance ever since. With his wife and two children he returned to South Africa in 1976, since when he has lived and worked in Cape Town. Lee High School in Tyler, Republic of Texas awarded their Texas. The Second Place Winner 33rd Annual Scholarship Awards to of $2,000 was Vanessa Bazan from Winners of the Texas History Essay New Braunfels High School in New Contest. The Awards totaled $5,000 Braunfels, Texas. Both students and were given to two graduating expressed their appreciation and plan High School Seniors. ABSTRACT JAMES W. FANNIN JR.: A BIOGRAPHY Michelle E. Herbelin Director: T. Michael Parrish, Ph.D. This thesis is a biography of Colonel James W. Fannin Jr., a pivotal and controversial but often marginalized figure in the Texas Revolution. Showing brilliant potential in the 1835 campaign, he was later caught up in the midst of a constitutional crisis in the Texas Provisional Government. He struggled to reckon with conflicting duties and unrealistic expectations in the face of the rapidly advancing Mexican Army. Fannin did not live to see the outcome of the Revolution, meeting his death in a bloody episode known commonly to Texas historiography as the Goliad Massacre. This study makes use of Fannin’s own frank, often introspective correspondence, accounts from the survivors of his command, and even more heretofore unutilized sources, and endeavors to describe Fannin in his rightful historical context: as an American, Southerner, and Texian. Battle of San Jacinto 1 Battle of San Jacinto The Battle of San Jacinto, fought on April 21, 1836, in present-day Harris County, Texas, was the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Led by General Sam Houston, the Texian Army engaged and defeated General Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican forces in a fight that lasted just eighteen minutes. About 630 of the Mexican soldiers were killed and 730 captured, while only nine Texans died.[1] Santa Anna, the President of Mexico, was captured the following day and held as a prisoner of war. Three weeks later, he signed the peace treaty that dictated that the Mexican army leave the region, paving the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country. These treaties did not specifically recognize Texas as a sovereign nation, but stipulated that Santa Anna was to lobby for such recognition in Mexico City. Sam Houston became a national celebrity, and the Texans' rallying cries, "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!" became etched into American history and legend. Background During the early years of Mexican independence, numerous American immigrants had settled in Mexican Texas, then a part of the state of Coahuila y Tejas, with the Mexican government's encouragement. In 1835 they rebelled against the Mexican government of Santa Anna because he rescinded the democratic Constitution of 1824, dissolved Mexico's Congress and state legislatures, and asserted dictatorial control over the nation. After capturing a few small outposts and defeating the Mexican army garrisons in the area, the Texans formed a provisional government and drafted a Declaration of Independence. -

Tell the in-depth history of the Alamo area to the present day as a tribute to all who lived, fought, and died there. EAST TEXAS HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION 25 MOTIVATIONS OF UNITED STATES VOLUNTEERS DURING THE TEXAS REVOLUTION, 1835-1836 by Phillip Thomas Tucker The romantic idealism that caused many United States citizens to enlist in the People's Army of Texas in 1835 and 1836 has been well documented. Volunteers from mostly the Southern states, but the Middle West and the North as well, played a key and perhaps the decisive role in winning the war for Texas Independence. The best known example of a direct military contribution in manpower from the United States to the Texas Revolu tion can be found with the two companies of Louisiana volunteers, the New Orleans Greys.1 In early 1836, the largest Texas force in the field, commanded by Colonel James Walker Fannin, was composed ofover nine ty percent of United States citizens.
