Getting to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo By Plane Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport has recently expanded and several of its areas are under renovation. It has multiple facilities including car rental desks, a restaurant and “duty-free” shops. There are non-stop flights from Mexico City, Toluca, Guadalajara, Acapulco Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary, among others. During the winter season the number of flights increases. The airport is located only 15 minutes far from Zihuatanejo and 25 minutes far from Ixtapa, both are connected by a modern four-lane highway. Federal highway 200 connects Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo with Acapulco, where modern “Autopista del Sol” connects with Mexico City. The driving distance between Mexico City and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is 637 kilómetros (396 miles). An alternate route and relatively faster between Mexico City and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is through Morelia with 667 km (414 mi), in the Autopista Siglo XXI. There are first class bus services between Ixtapa- Zihuatanejo and the rest of the main cities in the country. This paper presents a transnational communication and theorization of current events and activities with goals that range from the articulation and selection of ethno-racial terminology, to the dissemination of cultural identifiers, and the constitutional recognition of Afro-Mexicans. It also discusses projects and programs such as the Encuentro de los Pueblos Negros (Meeting of the Black Communities) in Oaxaca and Guerrero, and the association México Negro, A.C., in order to illustrate how community-based projects contribute to a reification of afromexicanidad or Afro-Mexican-ness as a dynamic and pluri- versal construction of being and of blackness.

    Birding Guerrero, Mexico: the Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo Area and the Sierra Madre Del Sur by Nick Lethaby and Brad Waggoner

    Birding Guerrero, Mexico: The Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo Area and the Sierra Madre del Sur By Nick Lethaby and Brad Waggoner Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo (henceforth referred to as the “Zihua area”) is a popular resort on the northern coast of Guerrero state in western Mexico. Although it is not covered in Howell's Bird-finding Guide to Mexico, it is a good location for birders who want quality birding close to their hotels. This makes it an ideal location for vacations with non- birding family members or friends, or for birders who just want to enjoy a few hours of relaxed birding most days. In addition it is relatively close to the endemic-rich Sierra Madre del Sur for those who prefer a more focused birding trip. In this guide, we will begin with some general information about timing of our visits. We will then overview the birds in six discreet coastal areas in the Zihua area, as well as briefly discussing pelagic birding. Next we cover birding in the Sierra Madre del Sur before finishing with some discussion of birding techniques and identification problems in the area. Timing of our visits We have made 9 visits between us to Guerrero, seven by Lethaby and two by Waggoner. Eight of these (and all to the Zihua area) were made between late November and early April. The ninth covered the interior slope of the Sierra de Atoyac in late July. By late March some of the more skulking local breeders, such as Flammulated Flycatcher are beginning to sing, which can make detection easier. The pygmy-owl species are also much more vocal and responsive at this time.
