Birding Guerrero, Mexico: The Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo Area and the Sierra Madre del Sur By Nick Lethaby and Brad Waggoner Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo (henceforth referred to as the “Zihua area”) is a popular resort on the northern coast of Guerrero state in western Mexico. Although it is not covered in Howell's Bird-finding Guide to Mexico, it is a good location for birders who want quality birding close to their hotels. This makes it an ideal location for vacations with non- birding family members or friends, or for birders who just want to enjoy a few hours of relaxed birding most days. In addition it is relatively close to the endemic-rich Sierra Madre del Sur for those who prefer a more focused birding trip. In this guide, we will begin with some general information about timing of our visits. We will then overview the birds in six discreet coastal areas in the Zihua area, as well as briefly discussing pelagic birding. Next we cover birding in the Sierra Madre del Sur before finishing with some discussion of birding techniques and identification problems in the area. Timing of our visits We have made 9 visits between us to Guerrero, seven by Lethaby and two by Waggoner. Eight of these (and all to the Zihua area) were made between late November and early April. The ninth covered the interior slope of the Sierra de Atoyac in late July. By late March some of the more skulking local breeders, such as Flammulated Flycatcher are beginning to sing, which can make detection easier. The pygmy-owl species are also much more vocal and responsive at this time.

3 Profile of Taxco de Alarcón By now, Mexico´s political, economic and socio-cultural context that is of importance for the silversmith business in Taxco has been analyzed. In the following section, a profile of Taxco and its federal state Guerrero will be presented in order to place the silversmith industry in its concrete context of operation. 3.1 Population and Location According to the latest census the state Guerrero has 3 338 768 inhabitants (INEGI, 2014b). Fifty-eight percent of the population in Guerrero live in urbanized regions, while 42% live on the countryside (INEGI, 2014c). The state has a lot of cultural diversity. There live approximately 600 000 indigenous people in Guerrero, dividing themselves in four different tribes and languages: Mixtecos, Amuzgos, Tlapanecos and Nahuas (Guerrero Gobierno del Estado 2011-2015, 2014). In Taxco, the population also is diverse, since the town has experienced a lot of immigration ever since its foundation as a mining center by the Spaniards. Furthermore, prehispanic settlements and ceremonial centers of indigenous cultures existed nearby (Labra, 2014). Taxco´s population is of 104 053 inhabitants, with respect to the latest census. The demographic pyramid shows that there are many young people aged from 4 to 24 years. Men and women are almost equally distributed (SEDESOL, 2014a). From the restorative properties of thermal waters and earth-based spa treat- ments to delving into the mystical and spiritual properties of gem- stones and herbs, the treasures and knowledge in these towns have existed for years—and, in some cases, for centuries. This chapter covers Taxco and Cuernavaca, two towns that fea- ture the artistry of Old Mexico. The legendary silver city of Taxco is renowned for its museums, picturesque hillside colonial-era charm, and, of course, its silver shops. Verdant Cuernavaca, known as the land of eternal spring, has gained a reputation for its excep- tional spa facilities and its wealth of cultural and historic attractions. Other good bets in this area include the venerable thermal spas at Ixtapan de la Sal and their more modern counterparts in Valle de Bravo (both north of Taxco and southwest of Mexico City).
