Brasil 28(4): 565-594 (1999) A Pesquisa com Moscas-das-Frutas (Diptera: Tephritidae) na América Latina: Mitos, Realidade e Perspectivas RESUMO – Apresento uma avaliação crítica da pesquisa com moscas-das-frutas na América Latina baseada na noção de que muitos mitos e mal-entendidos são transmitidos a estudantes, jovens pesquisadores ou administrações oficiais. Pondero que depois de um esclarecedor início de século, durante o qual muitas descobertas significativas foram feitas sobre a história natural desses insetos, pouco progresso tem sido observado em muitas áreas de pesquisas e manejo de moscas-das-frutas na América Latina durante os últimos 50 anos. Isso tem sido causado em parte pela escassez de estudos sob condições naturais, bem com pela abordagem reducionista utilizada no estudo desses insetos maravilhosos, considerando as espécies individualmente, ou apenas as espécies-praga. Para interromper esse círculo vicioso, proponho que demos mais atenção à história natural das espécies, independente de sua importância econômica, ampliemos o escopo e o período de tempo de nossos estudos, fortaleçamos os fundamentos teóricos e ecológicos das pesquisas com moscas-das-frutas na América Latina e enfatizemos o enfoque comparativo sempre que possível. -

Vol. 2, No. 1, January 2007___________ Scope: Munis Entomology & Zoology publishes a wide variety of papers on all aspects of Entomology and Zoology from all of the world, including mainly studies on systematics, taxonomy, nomenclature, fauna, biogeography, biodiversity, ecology, morphology, behavior, conservation, pa!eobiology and other aspects are appropriate topics for papers submitted to Munis Entomology & Zoology. Submission of Manuscripts: Works published or under consideration elsewhere (including on the internet) will not be accepted. At first submission, one double spaced hard copy (text and tables) with figures (may not be original) must be sent to the Editors, Dr. Hüseyin Özdikmen for publication in MEZ. All manuscripts should be submitted as Word file or PDF file in an e-mail attachment. If electronic submission is not possible due to limitations of electronic space at the sending or receiving ends, unavailability of e-mail, etc., we will accept ―hard‖ versions, in triplicate, accompanied by an electronic version stored in a floppy disk, a CD-ROM. Review Process: When submitting manuscripts, all authors provides the name, of at least three qualified experts (they also provide their address, subject fields and e-mails). Then, the editors send to experts to review the papers. The review process should normally be completed within 45-60 days. After reviewing papers by reviwers: Rejected papers are discarded. For accepted papers, authors are asked to modify their papers according to suggestions of the reviewers and editors. Final versions of manuscripts and figures are needed in a digital format. -

Vol. 35-36, 2005/6, pp. 9-34 Morphology and Phylogenetic Relationships of Species Groups of the Genus Hexachaeta Loew (Diptera: Tephritidae: Trypetinae) Vicente Hernández-Ortiz ABSTRACT A revision is made of the supra-specific classification and relationships of the American genus Hexachaeta Loew. Two subgenera and four species groups are recognized: Hexachaeta sensu stricto including two species groups: 1) the eximia group, comprising H. barbiellinii barbiellinii Lima, H. barbiellinii itatiaiensis Lima et Leite, H. dinia (Walker), H. enderleini Lima, H. eximia (Wiedemann), H. seabrai Lima, H. venezuelana Lima, H. zeteki Lima, and two undescribed species; and 2) the colombiana group, comprising H. colombiana Lima, H. bifurcata Hernández-Ortiz, H. nigriventris Hernández-Ortiz, H. leptofasciata Hernández-Ortiz, and H. ecuatoriana Hernández-Ortiz. Costamyia, new subgenus, also including two species groups: 1) the amabilis group, comprising H. amabilis (Loew), H. homalura Hendel, H. obscura Hendel, H. shannoni Lima, H. juliorosalesi Hernández-Ortiz, and two undescribed species; and 2) the socialis group comprising H. aex (Walker), H. bondari Lima et Leite, H. cronia (Walker), H. fallax Lima, H. major (Macquart), H. monostigma Hendel, H. nigripes Hering, H. oblita Lima, H. parva Lima, H. socialis (Wiedemann), H. valida Lima, and four undescribed species. Sementes de papagaio Aegiphila sellowiana -MG e avaliadas em -se com danos da ordem de 42,6 ± 4,6% po Hexachaeta sp. (Diptera: Tephritidae). (DIPTERA: TEPHITIDAE) IN SEEDS OF “PAPAGAIO”, Aegiphila sellowiana CHAM., 1832 (VERBENACEAE) ABSTRACT - Insects belonging to the Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Diptera orders are responsible for heavy damages to seeds of native trees in Brazil. Seeds from Aegiphila sellowiana (Verbenaceae), collected in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State showed 42.6 ± 4.6% of damage caused by Hexachaeta sp. (Diptera: Tephritidae). Larvae of this insect destroyed 58.2% of seed weight, resulting loss of germination. Key-Words: Hexachaeta, Aegiphila sellowiana, Loew, Verbenaceae, Diptera, seed-insect. Se describe e ilustra una nueva especie de Hexachaeta perteneciente al grupo de especies “amabilis”, localizada en los estados Aragua y Carabobo, en Venezuela. Se incluye información taxonómica y de distribución sobre las otras especies conocidas del grupo: H. amabilis (Loew, 1873), H. obscura Hendel, 1914, y H. shannoni Lima, 1953, adicionando caracteres diagnósticos, así como una clave para reconocer sus especies. Además se re-examinan y documentan las especies que a la fecha han sido registradas para Venezuela, H. venezuelana Lima, 1953; H. valida Lima, 1954; y H. nigriventris Hernández, 1999. A new species belonging to the “amabilis” group of the genus Hexachaeta from the states Aragua and Carabobo in Venezuela, is described and illustrated.
