  • And Dylan's Romanticism
“Isis” and Dylan’s Romanticism --John Hinchey I want to talk mainly about “Isis,” a song Dylan co-wrote with Off Broadway director Jacques Levy.1 “Isis” was the first of several songs that Dylan wrote with Levy during the summer of 1975, and this fruitful col- laboration yielded seven of the nine songs released at the end of that year on Desire. I’ve chosen “Isis” mainly because it’s an interesting and entertaining song in its own right, but also because it offers a useful vantage point for considering Dylan’s Romanticism, an abiding element in his artistic tem- perament that doesn’t get nearly as much attention as you’d think it would. Adventure, mystery, discovery, renewal, the vista of inexhaustible pos- sibility--these are the hallmarks of Romance. Its essence is an aspiration for a world without bounds, a vision of a life of unlimited possibility. “Forever Young” is a quintessentially Romantic idea, as is the popular conception of Heaven. Romanticism, you could say, is the impulse to find Heaven on Earth. It can sound ridiculous when you state it flat out this way, but al- 1 This is a slightly revised version of a paper presented at “A Series of Interpretations of Bob Dylan's Lyrical Works,” a conference hosted by the Dartmouth College English Department, August 11-13, 2006. Quotations of Dylan's lyrics are from the original official recordings, unless otherwise noted. When quoting lines extensively, I revert to the principle I used in Like a Complete Unknown (Ann Arbor: Stealing Home Press, 2002): “I’ve had to determine the ‘spaces between words’ for myself.

  • Bob Dylan's “This Dream of You” – an Analysis by Kees De Graaf
Bob Dylan’s “This Dream of You” – an analysis by Kees de Graaf. This song is the only one on the album ‘Together through Life’ (2009) of which both the music and the lyrics were composed by Bob Dylan; the rest of the lyrics of the album were co-written with Robert Hunter. It is a song that one hand deals with the fragility and mortality of the poet’s earthly existence which tends to drive him into the morals of despair, and on the other hand it deals with a faint, wavering and distant hope; a hope which is yet strong enough to keep him living on. As is the case in many Dylan songs, it is a debatable question as to who the “You” in the song might refer. When we take a look at the verses, we have good reasons to assume that the “You” might be Jesus or God. The mood of the song is definitely spiritual and there are a lot of Biblical connotations in the song; on the other hand, the song does not entirely exclude the possibility that the “You” may be a girl or a woman or some other person. This has one major advantage: it makes this song accessible and palatable to the public at large. Let’s have a closer look at the verses to see if we can back up our stance that the “You” may indeed be Jesus or God. “How long can I stay in this nowhere café, 'fore night turns into day, I wonder why I'm so frightened of dawn”.

Think Twice | Litany Dylan ! ! ! ! by Sadi Ranson ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Copyright, all rights electronic, digital, print: Sadi !Ranson, 2014. Bob Dylan lyrics and song titles kindly reprinted with permission; all rights reserved. ! ! ! !2 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Think Twice | Litany Dylan ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !3 ! Introduction ! ! ! I’ve listened to Dylan for years but I’m not sure that I have always heard him or that even now, with every listen, I really truly hear what he has to say. But when I do hear Dylan, I really hear him and he gets me when I am vulnerable, happy, sorrowful, ecstatic, tired – the gamut of emotions. And with Dylan, and this seems unique to my relationship with his music, he manages to touch my mind in ways that most other music does not. I say “most” for !of course some does – but generally, it’s Dylan. One winter morning at about three o’clock I was awakened by the gentle thud of snow outside my window. I rose and put on my iPod and listened to something Dylan - probably to Wedding Song or something off of Planet Waves – which has remained a staple in my Dylan diet for many years – and I began to write back; a sort of echo back to his words. That is the work contained here, in this brief volume. These words are not letters to Bob Dylan – please understand. The work here is addressed to whomever the lyrics and music that that particular song happens to evoke for me – and the responses are my own !particular and peculiar “series of dreams”. In the December 3rd, 1965 during the KQED San Francisco press conference Dylan was introduced as, “a poet” who would “answer questions from everything to atomic science to riddles and rhymes…” When asked how he viewed himself as performer Dylan said, “I tend to think of myself more as a song and dance man,” and dismissed the “folk-rock” label that was so often affixed to him, saying of himself and his work, “I like to think of it more in terms of vision music…”.
