SUBJECTIVE RETROSPECTIVE Another highly prolific year for Bob Dylan! After the recording of his best record for several years in April, a new enormous tour was kicked off in Sweden at the end of May. The name "The Never- Ending tour" was suggested by Dylan himself in an interview with Adrian Deevoy in the December issue of Q magazine. An amazing 99 shows were played in Europe, Canada and US. The new record, Oh Mercy , received high praise everywhere, most reviewers giving the producer, Daniel Lanois, lots of credits. 2 THE YEAR AT A GLANCE Songs In My Heart — Bob Dylan 1989 page 4 3 CALENDAR February 12 Bob Dylan joins the Grateful Dead on stage at their show at the LA Forum. He plays guitar on 8 songs and is finally persuaded (?) to sing on Knockin' On Heaven's Door. March-April OH MERCY recording sessions in New Orleans. May 27 The European tour starts with a show in the park of the Christinehof castle in the south of Sweden. July 1 After 21 shows in Europe, the tour continues in US in Peoria only two days after the last show in Athens, Greece. September 9-10 The summer tour concludes with two shows at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Nothing from the new album has been aired during this part of the tour. September 19 OH MERCY is released. September 21 The Edna Gundersen interview is published is USA Today. September 24 Dylan participates in the "L'Chaim To Life, Telethon '89" on Chabad TV. Together with his son-in-law Peter Himmelman and Harry Dean Stanton on guitars he plays flute and recorder (!) on three songs. The "group" is called 'Chopped Liver'. October 10 The fall tour starts with four shows at the Beacon Theater in New York. A number of the Oh Mercy songs are played at last. Before the tour is over they have played 6 songs from the new album, leaving the two first and the two last for the future. November 20 Dylan records People Get Ready in Bloomington, Indiana for the movie FLASHBACK. The soundtrack is released in 1990. December Q magazine publishes a long article by Adrian Deevoy called 'The Wanted Man', also containing an interview. 4 RECORDINGS Here’s a list of recordings from 1989 other than concerts. For details please refer to the corresponding session pages in Still On The Road. 12 February Guest appearance at a Grateful Dead concert May Rehearsals for the European Tour in New York City 24 September L'chaim To Life, Telethon '89 20 November Recording session in Bloomington, Indiana resulting in People Get Ready. Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies. 31.2 (December 2009): 41–56 ISSN 0210-6124 Tell-Tale Signs - Edgar Allan Poe and Bob Dylan: Towards a Model of Intertextuality Christopher Rollason Metz, France [email protected] This article shows how the poetry and prose of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) cast a long shadow over the work of America’s greatest living songwriter, Bob Dylan (1941-). The work of both artists straddles the dividing-line between ‘high’ and ‘mass’ culture by pertaining to both: read through Poe, Dylan’s work may be seen as a significant manifestation of American Gothic. It is further suggested, in the context of nineteenth- century and contemporary debates on alleged ‘plagiarism’, that the textual strategy of ‘embedded’ quotation, as employed by both Poe and Dylan, points up the need today for an open and inclusive model of intertextuality.     Woody Guthrie Annual, 4 (2018): Carney, “With Electric Breath” “With Electric Breath”: Bob Dylan and the Reimagining of Woody Guthrie (January 1968) Court Carney In 1956, police in New Jersey apprehended Woody Guthrie on the presumption of vagrancy. Then in his mid-40s, Guthrie would spend the next (and last) eleven years of his life in various hospitals: Greystone Park in New Jersey, Brooklyn State Hospital, and, finally, the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, where he died. Woody suffered since the late 1940s when the symptoms of Huntington’s disease first appeared—symptoms that were often confused with alcoholism or mental instability. As Guthrie disappeared from public view in the late 1950s, 1,300 miles away, Bob Dylan was in Hibbing, Minnesota, learning to play doo-wop and Little Richard covers. 1 Young Dylan was about to have his career path illuminated after attending one of Buddy Holly’s final shows. By the time Dylan reached New York in 1961, heavily under the influence of Woody’s music, Guthrie had been hospitalized for almost five years and with his motor skills greatly deteriorated. This meeting between the still stylistically unformed Dylan and Woody—far removed from his 1940s heyday—had the makings of myth, regardless of the blurred details. Whatever transpired between them, the pilgrimage to Woody transfixed Dylan, and the young Minnesotan would go on to model his early career on the elder songwriter’s legacy. More than any other of Woody’s acolytes, Dylan grasped the totality of Guthrie’s vision. Beyond mimicry (and Dylan carefully emulated Woody’s accent, mannerisms, and poses), Dylan almost preternaturally understood the larger implication of Guthrie in ways that eluded other singers and writers at the time.2 As his career took off, however, Dylan began to slough off the more obvious Guthrieisms as he moved towards his electric-charged poetry of 1965-1966.

    BOB ENNOBLED BOB DYLAN AND THE NOBEL PRIZE I am a Dylan fan and I know many of his songs by heart. I have seen him perform and have heard him mangle his own work in Birmingham, England, and then delight the Hammersmith Odeon. I have watched him forget some of the words to ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ in the Leisure Centre at Bournemouth. Indeed, since about 1963 and The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan I have spent many leisure hours and vital pounds, first of pocket money and then of earned income, keeping up with much of Dylan’s copious output. I’ve even tried to read his ‘novel’ Tarantula. While I am aware of his vocal and musical limitations and the way he can move from brilliant to dire, I love some of his songs, his phrasing and intonation this side of idolatry and sometimes beyond. I think the first four Dylan tracks I bought were on an 1963 EP called Dylan (Extended Play: remember those?) which rotated on the turntable at 45 rpm as his astonishing twenty-one-year old-voice sang: ‘Don’t Think Twice, it’s alright’, ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’, ‘When the Ship Comes in’ and then was it ‘Corinna, Corinna’? His way with song words has long held my qualified admiration and I enjoyed reading his Chronicles (Volume One) when they came out in 2004. For me, even with Dylan at his uneven best, it’s the words that matter most and the way he delivers them in the best of his supremely memorable songs. If I had to name my current top ten of his tracks, chosen with particular attention to the words and to do so rapidly from memory, I’d probably go for the following: ‘Boots

An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor to young artists and still a road warrior at age 80, Charlie has parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children and others in need. Raised among the longleaf pines of North Carolina, Charlie began his career playing bluegrass music with the Misty Mountain Boys. After moving to Nashville in 1967, he began making a name for himself as a songwriter, session musician and producer. Elvis Presley recorded a tune Charlie co-wrote titled “It Hurts Me,” which was released on the flip side of “Kissin’ Cousins.” He played on such landmark albums as Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline and tried his hand at producing the Youngbloods’ Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind. His own unique voice as an artist emerged as Charlie recorded his self-titled solo album in 1970 for Capitol Records. Two years later he formed the Charlie Daniels Band and the group scored its first hit with the top ten “Uneasy Rider.” Since then the CDB has populated radio with such memorable hits as “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South’s Gonna Do It Again,” “In America,” “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” and of course, his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1979 as well as single of the year at the Country Music Association Awards.
