spending some time recording material for Down In The Groove in the spring, Dylan reappeared together with The Grateful Dead for six summer shows in July. However the boyish image from last summer is now dramatically changed to the extreme opposite. Dylan is suddenly an old man, bearded, with an aching back, nearsighted, silent between songs and silent between shows. During the summer tour with The Grateful Dead and the Temples In Flames Tour in Europe in the fall he says not one single word in 36 concerts and he gives no interviews at all. Dylan 1987 - what happened? 2 1987 AT A GLANCE Jan Febr March April May June July August Sept October Nov December Taj Mahal concert Warren Zevon recording session Down In The Groove recording sessions George Gershwin celebration concert Ringo Starr recording session U2 concert U2 recording session Tour with The Grateful Dead Temples In Flames Tour Jan Febr March April May June July August Sept October Nov December 3 THE 1987 CALENDAR 19 February Dylan makes a guest appearance at a Taj Mahal concert at Palomino in Hollywood, California. February Another sideman job, this time Dylan is playing harmonica on a Warren Zevon recording session. The released track is called The Factory and is found on the Sentimental Hygiene album, released in August, 1987. 5 March Recording sessions for Down In The Groove start in the Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles, California. 11 March Dylan appears at one of the tribute concerts to George Gershwin at the 50th anniversary of his death. He performs Soon and the performance is broadcast by ZDF-TV in West Germany, 7 July 1987. 15 April Dylan records the song Wish I Know Now What I Knew Then, supposedly an original Dylan song with Ringo Starr and his band at the Three Alarm Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. The song remains unreleased but circulates. 20 April Dylan makes yet another guest appearance, now at a U2-concert at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. 16 June Last Down In The Groove recording session. June Dylan and The Grateful Dead rehearse in Club Front in San Rafael, California. 3 Determined To Stand - Bob Dylan 1987 June Dylan finds time to join U2 in Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee to record a joint composition with Bono, Love Rescue Me. It is released on the U2 album Rattle And Hum, October 1988. July Dylan and The Grateful Dead perform six shows together. 5 September The European tour, named Temples In Flames starts with two shows in Israel, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. 17 October The tour ends in London, England, with four shows at the Wembley Arena. 4 DOWN IN THE GROOVE The recording of Down In The Groove took place during a number of sessions starting in March and ending in June. Most songs recorded were covers. A number of titles are probably just the sound engineer’s best guess, and these songs may or may not be Dylan compositions. There are many details missing and the summaries below give only a fragmentary picture. • Bob Dylan's Life
Bob Dylan's Life Robert Allen Zimmerman born May 24 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota known by the pseudonym of Bob Dylan, was an American singer, song-writer, musician and author. He is an influential figure in popular music and culture. He became a reluctant « voice of a generation » when he moved to New York in the 1961 where he wrote songs like « Blowin' in the Wind » and « The Times Are a-Changin’ ». Those songs were to become anthems for Civil Rights Movement and anti-war movement. His recording career goes on for more than fifty years and he explored many musical genres from folk, blues, country to gospel, rock and roll … He recorded 38 studio albums, starting with Bob Dylan (1968) and still records songs today. Dylan's lyrics contain political, social, philosophical and literary influences and over the years he defied pop music conventions. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards and harmonica. He published his album on Columbia Records and Asylum Records. Since 1994, he also published seven books of drawings and paintings. As a musician, he sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He received many awards including eleven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award and many other prizes such as an NME Award. Nowadays Dylan still receives huge recognition: in 2012 the President Barack Obama gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 2016 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature « for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition ».

  • Judas 9 Text
Judas! from Inside A Prune Welcome to issue nine of Judas! As I write this Dylan has begun another year’s touring and although the set-lists may look predictable the arrangements are refresh - ingly, dramatically altered in many cases. Good for him. You will notice a New Morning theme through this issue, with no less than three articles looking at that intriguing period. In issue 10 there will be another theme running through the general articles and reviews; in this case it will be early acoustic Dylan, so if you have anything you want to say on that please send it in. I am not saying that we are doing theme issues as such, it is more a case of giving a recurrent flavour to certain editions. If you have resubscribed you will soon notice additions to the subscribers’ area of the Judas! website. Steve Lescure is generously giving us his 'Dylan Commentaries'. In his own words, he is ‘…bringing together information from a wide variety of sources - numerous books, magazine articles, and the Internet - condensing it down into the essentials and presenting it in an easy-to-digest format.’ This will eventually cover all of Dylan’s official output; the debut album material will be available in the near future. Also on our website we have started an archive section to publish those issues of Judas! that have already sold out. We are delighted to begin our series of excerpts from Izzy Young's back pages. These articles, notes and reviews can be found throughout the issue, wherever you see the symbol and comprise reprints - or first prints - from his notebooks as well as news - papers and magazines and so forth, as dated.

  • Bob Dylan's Conversions: the “Gospel Years” As Symptom And
chapter 6 Bob Dylan’s Conversions: The “Gospel Years” as Symptom and Transition Gisle Selnes Professor i allmenn litteraturvitenskap, universitetet i Bergen. Professor in Comparative Literature, University of Bergen, Norway. Abstract: This contribution analyzes Bob Dylan’s evangelic conversion in light of other conversions throughout his oeuvre, emphasizing the theological moment of the event of conversion as such. Two important aspects of conversion inaugurate Dylan’s born-again output: on the one hand, the isolation and purification of the figure of Christ as the all-pervading “object” of his quest; on the other, the “re- coding” of a series of figures and motifs from his earlier work, most of them derived, of course, from the proverbial American songbook. Before and after Dylan’s evan- gelical ruse, the legacy of 18th Century American Transcendentalism as well as Christ as an emblem of the rebel and/or artist constitute two relatively stable reli- gious aspects of his art.

The mono albums were eventually reissued by the US specialist reissue label Sundazed between 2001 and 2004, though only in vinyl format. They were remastered by Sundazed owner Bob Irwin, a well-respected audio engineer in his own right. Irwin put a lot of work into finding the right master tapes as well as into the remastering process itself, but nonetheless these editions evoked a somewhat mixed response, with some albums better received than others.
