It confronts the issues of text interpretation and musical style one must address in order to give the most informed performance of these songs. It provides a synthesis of information about the poems and readings of the poetry Harbison set to music, offers insight into Harbison‘s interpretations of the text, and demonstrates how Harbison‘s atonal style and unique compositional techniques provide a successful musical setting for the chosen texts. The guide also discusses performance issues based on personal experience as well as the experience of the composer and other performers. The poetic style of William Carlos Williams, Michael Fried, Czeslaw Milosz, Elizabeth Bishop, and Eugenio Montale are examined. A transcription of an interview with John Harbison is also included. The collection was assembled by New York gallery owner Sean Kelly and his wife, Mary Kelly. Totaling almost 350 items, it includes many signed and inscribed first editions of Joyce’s publications, as well as important manuscripts and correspondence, photographs, posters, publishers’ promotional material, translations, and a comprehensive reference collection. Among its many highlights are Joyce’s first stand-alone publication, the broadside The Holy Office (1904); four copies of the first edition of Ulysses (1922) on three different papers, one of which is inscribed; a fragment of the Ulysses Berenice Abbott (1898-1991), Portrait of James manuscript; Joyce’s typed schematic outline of the novel; Joyce, 1928. With this term, I would like to suggest that love is not only a prominent theme in Joyce, but a dominant concept within a philosophical and artistic trajectory, part and parcel of an artist’s progress as he experiments with the power of images and with modes of representation. My argument turns on three interconnected points: first, that early on in his career Joyce adopts a scholastic framework according to which love is the supreme philosophi- cal emotion and the source from which all other emotions proceed; sec- ond, that he puts this framework to the test by pitting the concept of love against a cluster of related passions, most notably desire, pity, and joy; and finally, that in exploring these passions, he grapples with the problem of reconciling a scholastic interpretation of love with a modernist approach to representation. Joyce originally adheres to the hierarchy of dramatic passions estab- lished by the scholastic tradition; but in the course of his artistic evolution he is led to question the sustainability of that hierarchy. We will see that this shift is best illustrated by a comparison between A Portrait of the Artist and Giacomo Joyce. -

Teaching guide: Area of study 2 (Popular music) Study piece Little Shop of Horrors (1982) off-Broadway version – the following three tracks: • Prologue/Little Shop of Horrors (overture) • Mushnik and Son • Feed Me. Contextual information Little Shop of Horrors first appeared as a low budget film in 1960: The story involves a plant which feeds on human blood and tissue. The main characters include: • Mushnik – the owner of the florist shop, who treats his staff badly • Seymour and Audrey – florist shop assistants • Orin – Audrey’s abusive dentist boyfriend • Chiffon, Crystal and Ronnette – a trio of street urchins who comment on the action as the story progresses • Audrey II – the plant. The version on which this guide is written for is the off-Broadway 1982 production. An off-Broadway production is one in a professional theatre venue in New York City with a seated audience capacity between 100 and 499, inclusive. These theatres are smaller than Broadway theatres, but larger than ‘off-off’ Broadway theatres, which seat fewer than 100: Some shows that premiere off-Broadway are subsequently produced on Broadway. A Broadway production takes place in a professional theatre with a seated audience capacity of more than 500 seats. After the 1982 production, there have been subsequent productions worldwide of Little Shop of Horrors and the musical was also made into a 1986 film, directed by Frank Oz. The music for this 1982 off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors was composed by Alan Menken (b.1949). -

ABSTRACT This thesis considers the imbrications created by James Joyce in his writing with the work of John Milton, through allusions, references and verbal echoes. These imbrications are analysed in light of the concept of ‘presence’, based on theories of intertextuality variously proposed by John Shawcross, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, and Eelco Runia. My analysis also deploys Gumbrecht’s concept of stimmung in order to explain how Joyce incorporates a Miltonic ‘atmosphere’ that pervades and enriches his characters and plot. By using a chronological approach, I show the subtlety of Milton’s presence in Joyce’s writing and Joyce’s strategy of weaving it into the ‘fabric’ of his works, from slight verbal echoes in Joyce’s early collection of poems, Chamber Music, to a culminating mass of Miltonic references and allusions in the multilingual Finnegans Wake. -

James Joyce and His Influences: William Faulkner and Anthony Burgess An abstract of a Dissertation by Maxine i!3urke July, Ll.981 Drake University Advisor: Dr. Grace Eckley The problem. James Joyce's Ulysses provides a basis for examining and analyzing the influence of Joyce on selected works of William Faulkner and Anthony Bur gess especially in regard to the major ideas and style, and pattern and motif. The works to be used, in addi tion to Ulysses, include Faulkner's "The Bear" in Go Down, Moses and Mosquitoes and Burgess' Nothing Like the Sun. For the purpose, then, of determining to what de gree Joyce has influenced other writers, the ideas and techniques that explain his influence such as his lingu istic innovations, his use of mythology, and his stream of-consciousness technique are discussed. Procedure. Research includes a careful study of each of the works to be used and an examination of var ious critics and their works for contributions to this influence study. The plan of analysis and presentation includes, then, a prefatory section of the dissertation which provides a general statement stating the thesis of this dissertation, some background material on Joyce and his Ulysses, and a summary of the material discussed in each chapter. Next are three chapters which explain Joyce's influence: an introduction to Joyce and Ulysses; Joyce and Faulkner; and Joyce and Burgess. Thus Chapter One, for the purpose of showing how Joyce influences other writers, discusses the ideas and techniques that explain his influences--such things as his linguistic innovations, his use of mythology, and his stream-of consciousness method. -

Foi ele quem salvou, e sua viúva depois vendeu para Cornell, a ampla coleção de cartas privadas que revela quase tudo que se sabe sobre fatos da família de Nora, seu namoro e seu relacionamento com James Joyce”.1 Grande parte da correspondência entre o casal foi escrita apenas por Joyce, já que Nora não gostava de redigir cartas e só o fazia por necessidade. Não são raras as vezes em que Joyce, nas cartas à companheira, a chama de “caladinha”, “silenciosa” e implora que ela lhe escreva. As cartas de Joyce a Nora, reunidas neste volume, teriam, como todas as correspondências amorosas, de acordo com a tese de Roland Barthes, a seguinte característica: “eu falo e você me escuta, logo nós somos”,2 numa frase de Ponge, retomada pelo crítico francês. Archipelagic Poetry of the First World War David Goldie For well over a century before the First World War, the British Army had played a significant role in cementing the Union of Great Britain and Ireland, offering escape, a way out of poverty, or the opportunity of adventure for young men from the impoverished regions and smaller nations of the United Kingdom. Scots and Irish soldiers in particular were mainstays of the Victorian army, at times almost outnumbering English soldiers in the ranks. In the twenty years leading up to the war many of the military’s decision-makers had significant Irish or Scottish connections. Several Commanders-in-Chief of the Army in this period, including Viscount Wolseley and Roberts, were Irish and another, Lord Kitchener, had been born in Ireland. The man responsible for building the modern army as the Secretary of State for War in the decade before the war, Viscount Haldane, was a Scot. The first commander of the British Expeditionary Force, Field Marshal Sir John French came from an old Anglo-Irish family and its second, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, was a Scot. A smattering of key generals, such as General Sir Ian Hamilton, who commanded the Dardanelles campaign, were Scots or Irish: of the five wartime Chiefs of the Imperial General Staff two, General Sir Charles Douglas and Lieutenant General Sir James Wolfe-Murray, were Anglo-Scots and another, General Sir Henry Wilson, was an Ulsterman. The Army before and during the war was, then, perhaps one of the most fully integrated structures of the British state, and one in which the dominant ruling-class English voice was strongly inflected by the diverse accents of its Celtic fringes. -
