This conceptual paper considers the role that film can play to encourage and enhance tourism in the Marche Region of Italy. Based on theoretical knowledge developed to date, a process to develop film tourism product is proposed. The examination of Pufendorf’s Monzambano shows that he was strongly interested in the question of sovereignty, and that the complex reality of the Holy Roman Empire demanded a completely new approach to the question of where sovereignty within the Empire lay. Pufendorf developed his account of the Empire as an irregular political system by using essential aspects of Hobbes’s theory and thus departed from all previous writers on the forma imperii. But Pufendorf’s writing on the Empire has not only to be linked with political and philosophical discussion about sovereignty within the Empire but also with his own main writings where he developed a more detailed theory regarding the issue of sovereignty in general. -

Common and Noteworthy Instruments from 1750s-1800s’ Eastern USA Emory Jacobs Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Scott Marosek Department of Music During the 1700s and 1800s, residents of the eastern seaboard of North America enjoyed a wide variety of instruments, many of them built for “contrast and variety.”1 Availability, on the other hand, was a different story. While few accounts of the musical scene in that time period exist for more rural settings, records of the area and the events of the period from 1750 through the 1800s paint an interesting picture of how specific social classes and needs determined an instrument’s popularity. At the time, instruments were highly controversial, especially among specific religious groups.2 The religious restrictions on music occurred in relatively isolated sub- cultures in America, whereas notable sources from Germany would spend a novel’s worth of pages praising how perfect the organ was and would carefully list the detail of instruments’ tuning, mechanisms, and origins.3 When comparing these European instrument lists or collections with confirmed colonial instruments, one finds that very few of the elaborate, most prized instruments were exported to North America. Even outside America’s religious institutions, instruments were sometimes considered profane.4 While some instruments and some musical styles escaped such stigma, other instruments and styles had more ominous ties or were considered inelegant; the violin and fiddle offer one illustration.5 The phenomenon suggests that American society’s acceptance of music may have been a sensitive or subtle affair, as the difference between the violin and fiddle is often described as the fiddle being a poorly crafted violin or, in some cases, as a different musical style performed on the violin. -

Advisor: David Armitage Author: Dzavid Dzanic The Civilizing Sea: The Ideological Origins of the French Mediterranean Empire, 1789-1870 Abstract This dissertation examines the religious, diplomatic, legal, and intellectual history of French imperialism in Italy, Egypt, and Algeria between the 1789 French Revolution and the beginning of the French Third Republic in 1870. In examining the wider logic of French imperial expansion around the Mediterranean, this dissertation bridges the Revolutionary, Napoleonic, Restoration (1815-30), July Monarchy (1830-48), Second Republic (1848-52), and Second Empire (1852-70) periods. Moreover, this study represents the first comprehensive study of interactions between imperial officers and local actors around the Mediterranean. -

The king gave way to the nation at the center of political life as the location of sovereignty transferred to the people. While the French Revolution changed the structure of France’s government, it also changed the allegorical representations of the nation. At the Revolution’s onset, the monarchy embodied both the state and nation as equated ideas. -
Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th.
