A quarter of a century later the experience has informed the design of a set of dementia-friendly prefabricated apartments that could soon be erected in Britain. The queen, together with the founder of the Ikea furniture chain, drew up the plans for the first prototypes of low-cost modular flats to ensure that patients and their carers could continue to live in their own homes. 1 The six model apartments in Stockholm are a pilot for a concept that is intended to be spread across Scandinavia and into the UK over the next few years. “In Sweden the number of people aged 80 or over will increase by 85 per cent from 2015 to 2030,” Jonas Spangenberg, chief executive of BoKlok, the building company that made them, said. “Society needs to find a solution where more people can stay at home for longer; and actually people want to stay in their own home. This is also much cheaper for everybody.” The idea emerged several years ago when Ingvar Kamprad, the Ikea billionaire, made a large donation to Queen Silvia’s dementia charity, the Silviahemmet foundation. After some thought the pair decided to spend the money on designing affordable ready-built housing for older couples that could be easily adapted to their needs if one of them were to develop dementia.

    Howard J. Garber Letter Collection This collection was the gift of Howard J. Garber to Case Western Reserve University from 1979 to 1993. Dr. Howard Garber, who donated the materials in the Howard J. Garber Manuscript Collection, is a former Clevelander and alumnus of Case Western Reserve University. Between 1979 and 1993, Dr. Garber donated over 2,000 autograph letters, documents and books to the Department of Special Collections. Dr. Garber's interest in history, particularly British royalty led to his affinity for collecting manuscripts. The collection focuses primarily on political, historical and literary figures in Great Britain and includes signatures of all the Prime Ministers and First Lords of the Treasury. Many interesting items can be found in the collection, including letters from Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning Thomas Hardy, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, King George III, and Virginia Woolf. Descriptions of the Garber Collection books containing autographs and tipped-in letters can be found in the online catalog. The thesis explores the importance of these events for queens as both a personal and public experience, and questions the existence of distinctly Western and Eastern styles of queenship. A comparative study of ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ ceremony in the sixteenth century has never been attempted before and sixteenth- century Polish queens usually do not appear in any collective works about queenship, even those which claim to have a pan-European focus.

During your visit, you will no doubt see the great respect in which you and your country are held by German citizens. I myself have always felt close to Sweden, not just since my first state visit to Stockholm as Federal President in 2012. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, your country was a country of my dreams – as it was for many East Germans. In the years of Europe’s division, countless people stood at the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg and Pomerania, at the place where we East Germans could go no further. We looked out to the horizon. Somewhere on the other side of the sea, there had to be Sweden, the country which had what we could only dream of: freedom, democracy and real social justice. Today, we can say that Sweden and the happily reunified Germany share the conviction that free societies work better if they aspire to create opportunities and participation for all. This is a thought that inspires people not just in our two countries, but around the world.

PUBLIC DOMAIN History WOMEN IN HISTORY | AFRICAN LEGEND Dihya, Berber Warrior Queen Dihya was born into the Jarawa Zenata tribe in the 7th century and eventually ruled a free Berber state in north Africa that stretched from the Aures Mountains to the oasis of Gadames. She is usually described as very tall with a lot of hair, which may mean she wore her hair long and in dread- locks. The Ancient History Encyclopedia says she was a black, African queen who dressed as royals of ancient Numidia in a loose tunic or robe, sometimes belted, with sandals. FIGHTING THE ARABS Dihya was also referred to in Arabic sources as al Kahina, meaning the soothsayer, because of her alleged ability to foresee the future. She fought off the armies of the Umayyad Dynasty, led by Hasan bin al-Nu’man, who marched from Egypt and met her near Meskiana in 698 (modern day Algeria). It’s said she beat him so badly that he fled to Libya for five years. However, Hasan eventually returned and, helped by a captured officer, defeated Dihya near Tabarka in modern Tunisia near the Algerian border. History dis- agrees on whether she died a warrior’s death in battle or took poison to prevent capture, but it likely occurred in the late 690s or early 700s.

    Forging a Transcultural Identity as a Russian-American Writer Lara Vapnyar and Cultural Adaptation KAREN L.RYAN ________________________ a ________________________ Introduction ARA V APNYAR is one of a loosely delimited group of Russian-Amer- ican writers who have come to prominence on the North American L literary scene in the last ten to fifteen years, as part of the so-called Fourth Wave of Russian émigrés. Most of these relatively young writers came to the USA or Canada as children or adolescents. In a few cases, they are the children of Third-Wave émigrés, who left the Soviet Union in the 1970s and early 1980s. Although their work is stylistically and generically diverse, they share a predilection for quasi-autobiographical prose and a preoccupation with questions of cultural identity, adaptation and assimilation, and nostalgia. In addition to Vapnyar, this group includes David Bezmozgis (b. 1973), Olga Grushin (b. 1971), Irina Reyn (b. 1974), Gary Shteyngart (b. 1972), and Anya Ulinich (b. 1973). A more extensive roster of Russian anglophone writers would include Mark Budman (b. 1950), Sana Krasikov (b. 1979), and Ellen Litman (b. 1973). Although their originary language1 is Russian, all of these writers have opted to write in English in the North American diaspora.2 Most have acquired their 1 ‘Originary’ here refers to one’s primary language. It is quite possible to have more than one native language, but the originary language is that into which one is born. This terminology is not without its problems, but it captures well the linguistic circum- stances of these Russian-American writers.
