This event involved five of the top six ranked teams at the 1986 World Cup (in Amstelveen): Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Great Britain and Australia. The only leading country, at that time, not competing in Amstelveen was West Germany. The 1986 World Cup-silver medallist and 1984 Olympic-silver medallist did not accept the original invitation and was replaced by Korea (the host - country of the 1988 Olympics). In April 1987 the Council of the FIH (International Hockey Federation) decided to recognise this tournament as the first Women’s Champions Trophy. The Women’s Champions Trophy is counterpart to the Men’s Champions Trophy, which was established in 1978 by the FIH following a proposal from the Pakistan Hockey Federation, to promote international hockey. Netherlands, at that time World Champions (1986), Olympic Champions (1984) and European Champions (1984), became the first ever winners of the Women’s Champions Trophy. The Dutch team won all five of their matches, scoring 21 goals. Australia finished second and Korea were ranked third. The FIH decided to stage the Women’s Champions Trophy once every two years, but in 1999, after the seventh Champions Trophy held in Brisbane, Australia, the rhythm was changed to today's one-year- cycle. This year’s edition, the 20th in history, will take place in Rosario, Argentina. It is the second time in the women’s competition that the field has been expanded to include eight teams instead of the usual six. Olympic Champions Netherlands will be joined in Pool A by Great Britain, China and Japan while World Champions Argentina will have Germany, Korea and New Zealand in Pool B. Last year Netherlands beat Argentina in the gold medal game after a penalty shoot-out (picture). Maartje Paumen scored a hat-trick to help her team recover from a 3-0 deficit to tie the match, before two goalless periods of extra time lead to the first penalty shoot-out in Champions Trophy history. New Zealand took bronze beating Korea 3-2 in the bronze medal match. Charlotte Harrison scored a late winner with less than 40 seconds of the match remaining. The win gave New Zealand their first ever medal at an FIH Champions Trophy. 1. - Copyright Infostrada Sports Group / FIH Argentina FIH CHAMPIONS TROPHY Women 2012 Factfile 1.2 Schedule Venue: Estadio Mundialista, Rosario (Argentina) Pool A Pool B China - CHN Argentina - ARG Great Britain - GBR Germany - GER Japan - JPN Korea - KOR Netherlands - NED New Zealand - NZL Pool Matches Date Nr Time (local) Pool Match Saturday 28 January 1 12:30 A Netherlands vs China 2 15:00 A Great Britain vs Japan 3 18:30 B Germany vs Korea 4 20:00 B Argentina vs New Zealand Sunday 29 January 5 12:30 A China vs Japan 6 15:00 A Great Britain vs Netherlands 7 17:30 B New Zealand vs Korea 8 20:00 B Germany vs Argentina Monday 30 January Rest Day Tuesday 31 January 9 12:30 A Netherlands vs Japan 10 15:00 A China vs Great Britain 11 17:30 B New Zealand vs Germany 12 20:00 B Argentina vs Korea Wednesday 01 February Rest Day Classification Matches Date Nr Time Round Match Thursday 02 February 13 12:30 Quarter Final 1st Pool A vs 4th Pool B 14 15:00 Quarter Final 2nd Pool B vs 3rd Pool A 15 17:30 Quarter Final 2nd Pool A vs 3rd Pool B 16 20:00 Quarter Final 1st Pool B vs 4th Pool A Friday 03 February 17 17:30 5/8 Loser 13 vs Loser 14 18 20:00 5/8 Loser 15 vs Loser 16 Saturday 04 February 19 17:30 Semi Final Winner 13 vs Winner 14 20 20:00 Semi Final Winner 15 vs Winner 16 Sunday 05 February 21 12:30 Final 7-8 Loser 17 vs Loser 18 22 15:00 Final 5-6 Winner 17 vs Winner 18 23 17:30 Final 3-4 Loser 19 vs Loser 20 24 20:00 Final 1-2 Winner 19 vs Winner 20 Note: Subject to the approval of the FIH Representative and Tournament Director any match(es) may be rescheduled to accommodate international television requirements. 2. - Copyright Infostrada Sports Group / FIH 2 : Teams Argentina Nr Name Date of Birth Position Int. • Black Sticks Named for Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Hobart
21 September, 2011 Media release Black Sticks named for Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Hobart The Black Sticks national coaches have named their teams for the 2011 Oceania Olympic Qualifier to be played in Hobart from 6-9 October, 2011. The Oceania region has two Olympic allocations courtesy of world rankings for both men and women and with Fiji having pulled out it gives Australia and New Zealand automatic qualification to the London Olympics. The qualifier will now be a three test series between the two rival teams. The national coaches say the qualifier will be more about getting further test experience against Australia and gaining valuable world ranking points. Black Sticks Women’s coach Mark Hager has named an experienced team, selecting the same 18 players who beat Australia in pool play and went on to win bronze at the 2011 Champions Trophy in July in Amsterdam. “This will be a hard fought series against a top team - there is so much rivalry between these two sides. With us ranked sixth and Australia ranked seventh, we will need to win the series in order to hold our position,” says Hager. Black Sticks Men’s coach Shane McLeod has chosen a very experienced men’s team with players like Phil Burrows, Blair Hopping and Dean Couzins – all who rack up a total 730 test caps. This will be the opportunity to take on world champions Australia, which will be invaluable in their build up to the Champions Trophy being held at North Harbour in early December. “This Olympic qualifier forms a key component of our preparation towards Champions Trophy and will allow us to test our game against a world champion, gold medal team.

  • Tonight Regent Street Welcomed Team GB and Paralympicsgb with a New Display of the World Famous Regent Street Christmas Lights
Tonight Regent Street welcomed Team GB and ParalympicsGB with a new display of the world famous Regent Street Christmas lights Tonight, at 6.50pm on Tuesday 13 November 2012, the Regent Street Christmas lights were switched on by Team GB and ParalympicGB athletes for the final gold moment of 2012. Olympic long jump gold medallist Greg Rutherford, gold medallist rower Helen Glover and Paralympic cycling couple Sarah and Barney Storey, were amongst the 40 athletes who switched on the brand new light scheme on Regent Street, London W1. The evening begun with a choral rendition of the ’12 days of Christmas’ and a special performance of ‘Naughty’ by the cast of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s award-winning production, Matilda The Musical. Throughout the evening, Classic FM presenters John Suchet and Jamie Crick entertained the audience, with performances from the leading trumpet soloist Tine Thing Helseth, the all-female classical quintet The Masques, and a stunning performance of ‘Jerusalem’ by renowned opera singer, Noah Stewart. The evening closed with a spectacular pyrotechnic display from the Regent Street rooftops, illuminating London’s Mile of Style. The new design for 2012 now lights the night sky for the ultimate magical Christmas shopping experience. Decorated with gold holly and red berry garlands, celebratory tributes to the Olympic and Paralympic teams hang from the sky, and interspersed along the street gold filigree plaques telling the story of the Twelve Days of Christmas. For the first time ever the Regent Street Christmas Lights are displayed along the full length of Regent Street, from Oxford Circus all the way down to Piccadilly Circus, before continuing south down Regent Street in St James’s.
