WWW.FIHPROLEAGUE.COM 7 A MESSAGE OF WELCOME FROM DR. NARINDER DHRUV BATRA, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY FEDERATION (FIH)

Dear All,

It is with the greatest of pleasure that I welcome you to Season 2 of the FIH Hockey Pro League, the annual global League that features the world’s best international men’s and women’s teams facing off against one another between January and June.

The first edition of the ground-breaking competition took place in 2019 and featured some won- derful hockey moments, with the fans embracing the ‘power of home’ by turning out in their thousands to watch the host nations testing themselves against the finest international teams and players on the planet.

The growing audiences in the stadium and via broadcast and streaming via FIH.live were not to be disappointed, as the six-month competition allowed the sport of hockey to showcase itself like never before. Shock results, stunning team performances and extraordinary individual achieve- ments became part and parcel of the weekly Pro League experience, with the speed, skill and athleticism of our athletes being abundantly clear to all who witnessed it. In the end it was the Netherlands women and Australia men who emerged as inaugural FIH Hockey Pro League cham- pions, titles they will be determined to successfully defend in the Olympic year of 2020.

Whilst understandably delighted with so many aspects of the first edition, it is not in our na- ture to maintain the status quo by simply standing still. The 2020 edition of the FIH Hockey Pro League sees the introduction of a new match schedule, splitting home and away matches over two consecutive seasons to create a series of ‘double headers’ throughout the competition. This is an important move in terms of player welfare and sustainability, significantly reducing travel fatigue and environmental impact by cutting the number of flights by half, which in turn substan- tially lowers travel and accommodation costs for the competing teams.

As well as the new match schedule, we are delighted to welcome another powerhouse of inter- national hockey as India men join the competition. The eight-times Olympic champions will play their home matches at the iconic Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, the 15,000-capacity venue that so wonderfully staged the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup in 2018. I am certain that India will thoroughly enjoy their debut season in the FIH Hockey Pro League, and that the fans in Bhu-

WWW.FIHPROLEAGUE.COM 8 baneswar will be treated to some magnificent matches.

I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to the host National Associations for their tire- less efforts in planning and preparing for the forthcoming season of the FIH Hockey Pro League. I also offer my heartfelt gratitude to all of the tournament officials – this incredible competition would not be possible without the unwavering commitment that these fantastic volunteers give to our sport.

I invite all hockey fans in the world to attend the matches or watch them on TV or on FIH.live. With the FIH Hockey Pro League, you can expect hockey at its best!

Yours in Hockey,

Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra

FIH President

WWW.FIHPROLEAGUE.COM 9 ALL ABOUT THE FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE

THE HEADLINES

• The FIH Hockey Pro League is the annual global League involving hockey’s best national teams in the world, Men and Women. • The best team of the season – having accumulated the highest number of points at the end of the League - is crowned Champion and receives the FIH Hockey Pro League Trophy. • The FIH Hockey Pro League enables fans to go and see their favourite team play 8 games at home against the elite of international hockey, something which happens rather rare- ly in hockey where most international competition games are held through tournaments played in just one country. • The competition takes place in the first half of the year. Its first edition was played in 2019. Australia (Men) and The Netherlands (Women) were the inaugural Champions.

1. WHAT IS FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE?

The FIH Hockey Pro League is the annual global League involving hockey’s best national teams in the world, Men and Women.

The best team of the season – having accumulated the highest number of points at the end of the League - is crowned Champion and receives the FIH Hockey Pro League Trophy.

The FIH Hockey Pro League enables fans to go and see their favourite team play 8 games at home against the elite of international hockey, something which happens rather rarely in hockey where most international competition games are held though tournaments played in just one country.

The competition takes place in the first half of the year.

Its first edition was played in 2019. Australia (Men) and The Netherlands (Women) were the inau- gural Champions.

We believe the FIH Hockey Pro League is transform the landscape of international hockey be- cause hockey fans the world over are able to watch their favourite sport for an extended period on the same TV channel or on the streaming platform FIH.live each year. Moreover, those fans whose team is participating have the chance to be part of the noise and sheer excitement of watching their team regularly in their home country.

The competition format is identical for the men’s and women’s leagues.

2. WHAT ARE THE NUMBERS?

• There are 9 men’s and 9 women’s teams • Therefore every team plays 8 home and 8 away matches (with 2 back-to-back matches against the same team in the same venue) • That means there are 144 FIH Pro League matches altogether • Matches are being played in the first half of the year

3. HOW DID YOU SELECT THE TEAMS THAT ARE IN THE FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE?

The teams that were selected to play in the first FIH Hockey Pro League were not simply the best national men’s and women’s teams in the world. Instead, we used a much broader set of criteria as part of our application process. We set out our participation criteria very transparently, en- couraging a range of nations to apply. The aim of the process was to ensure the quality of the League and the highest possible standard of events right from the start.

The criteria were developed around meeting the three main objectives of the new event portfolio: to generate a massive change in TV and media coverage for hockey; create big, bold, packed and loud events and to make a step change in future revenues for the sport.

In December 2016, we sent application documents to the top 16 men’s and women’s hockey na- tions as listed in the FIH World Rankings. We were clear that the teams would be chosen by a specially selected FIH Event Portfolio Implementation Panel.

National Associations were required to submit extensive information in order to be eligible, with sustainability the key aspect of the Leagues’ long term vision.

Alongside this process, we held extensive discussions with national broadcasters regarding expo- sure and media coverage of hockey within each of the selected nations.

We asked for detailed financial modelling, projecting budgets for both the participation in match- es overseas as well as hosting matches in their homeland. Details about marketing proposals for promoting the League plus commercial strategies aimed at generating income were required, alongside evidence of financial sustainability.

We also considered which nations could best offer the perfect stage for these teams to shine. With a requirement to host ‘Big, Bold, Packed and Loud’ events in line with the FIH’s 10-year Hockey Revolution strategy, venue selection and experience of hosting previous events was also

WWW.FIHPROLEAGUE.COM 11 included amongst the criteria for entry.

There was no bidding fee associated with League participation so nations did not need to worry that selection would simply be offered to the highest bidder.

The deadline for applications was the 30th April 2017 and there was an overwhelming response from National Associations wanting to be part of this league.

In all there were 13 Women’s teams vying for 9 spots and 12 Men’s teams competing for their 9 places. It was an incredibly competitive process and gave the panel some hard decisions to make in choosing the teams.

Whilst it has not been easy, we know it’s been a thorough and robust process - assessing appli- cations against the defined criteria:

• Broadcast and Media coverage • Financial sustainability • Commercial vision • Legal compliance • Proposed venues • Match Experience and Sports Presentation • Organisation and personnel • Marketing strategies • Motivation and Legacy • Team performance history • Previous event hosting

4. HOW DID YOU ARRIVE AT THIS TYPE OF LEAGUE?

We formed our Event Portfolio Working Group in December 2014 to develop a set of recommen- dations to put to the Executive Board. But before we made any decisions or recommendations, we knew it was critical to agree some principles that would ensure we made the right decisions for the right reasons, keeping us on track when it came to the most difficult or issues.

Our Principles were:

1. STAND-OUT EVENTS We had to create events that would produce the maximum drama possible and be able to cut through the noise – events that will really get noticed.

2. SIMPLE AND MEANINGFUL The players, fans and our commercial partners needed to understand, engage and get involved with the events as easily and spontaneously as possible.

3. A PREDICTABLE, REGULAR CALENDAR We felt it was essential that everybody involved in hockey should be able to plan ahead and de- velop new habits – particularly our fans who wanted to see more of the games they love.

WWW.FIHPROLEAGUE.COM 12 4. OPPORTUNITIES TO SEE We wanted fans to be able to see their team playing more often so they can build allegiance to their ‘home team’ and their ‘home players’.

5. FOCUS ON RIVALRIES This was about increasing the number of games played between nations “with historical sporting rivalries” – and also ensuring we were playing the quality type of matches that most fans really wanted to see!

From the outset we agreed that every event in our new portfolio had to meet not one, but all of the principles we drew up

OUR CONSULTATION PROCESS…

Never in the history of hockey have we consulted so thoroughly with so many people from dif- ferent stakeholder groups and different backgrounds in different countries. We held meetings, workshops and conference calls, presenting early drafts and many, many amended drafts – in- cluding concepts that were completely discarded along the way.

Three years of research, consultation and development with more than 600 individuals, includ- ing athletes, National Associations, Continental Federations, major broadcasters, the Interna- tional Olympic Committee, individuals at Continental Federation congresses, officials and um- pires, FIH Committee and Panel members and FIH staff.

In addition to this, we invited Deloitte (international specialists in audit, consulting, financial ad- visory, risk management and tax), to provide extensive support in developing the financial mod- elling for the new portfolio of events.

5. WHY WAS A HOME AND AWAY CONCEPT CHOSEN - THIS IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL TOURNAMENT HO CKEY?

The FIH Hockey Pro League will leverage – and make the most of – one of our most important, powerful and under-used assets: ‘The power of home’

Creating a Home & Away Global League is a hugely significant and exciting step for us to take because:

• It means we can hold far more home matches than ever before • It’s like taking our most valuable asset and increasing it – overnight – by over 500%

At last we can say – with total conviction – ‘Hockey’s coming Home’! Every match played in the FIH Pro League will be a home match.

The reason this is so important is that home fixtures provide us with a chance to drive loyalty and passion, to develop those strong allegiances that will last a lifetime, to hold more meaningful

WWW.FIHPROLEAGUE.COM 13 matches and encourage new habits amongst our fans.

We see the evidence of this in other sports the world over and we see it for ourselves when home teams are playing in our existing events.

The impact is huge. With more spectators and more local fans, our events are suddenly more attractive to broadcasters and commercial partners and so we are able to generate more income.

At the same time, it means playing fewer matches because we stop playing the matches that we know have minimal value.

We know it’s what our fans want. We know that “Hockey is best at home”.

The teams selected substantially benefit from the increased number of home matches as part of a more consistent hockey calendar. With more opportunities to see their heroes in action throughout the year, national teams’ fan base and followers are expected to grow over the years. This will not only increase the commercial value of the sport through ticket sales, hospitality and merchandising, but also commercial interest in the teams and their athletes through increased sponsorship opportunities.

It is predicted that the increased commercial potential of implementing the new structure will generate more value for the sport, which will filter down into all levels, including new and devel- oping hockey nations, from elite to grassroots level.

So we firmly believe the FIH Hockey Pro League is an amazing concept for hockey - chosen be- cause it fulfils the principles we laid out and because of the potential it has to deliver so many benefits to the sport.

We want to send out a message to those millions of general sports fans around the world to say we invite you to ‘come and have a look at Hockey!’

6. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THE ATHLETES?

The FIH Hockey Pro League raises the profile of all the teams involved, building a wider, more committed and loyal fanbase who has so many more chances than before to see their team in action at home.

When you add to this the essential element of more national TV broadcasters as well as a global streaming platform – FIH.live - and with that, more sponsorship, it’s easy to see the impact this new League has on the players.

We have always made one of the aims of the Hockey Revolution to build player profile. We be- lieve the FIH Hockey Pro League will generate the kind of interest – across all media – to turn hockey players into sport celebrities.

This becomes a virtuous circle. When you create sport celebrities, they have the power to bring new fans – young and old – to the sport for life.

WWW.FIHPROLEAGUE.COM 14 FIH is working hard to amplify the impact of all the participating teams, within the markets of the participating nations and also globally.

7. WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE TEAMS WHO DO NOT MAKE IT INTO THE LEAGUE?

• FIH Hockey World Cup – Men and Women – continues to be held every 4 years. After all, this is our tournament – we own it – and it’s become one of the most prestigious prizes that exists in Hockey – it’s right up there alongside winning a gold medal at the . Essentially the World Cup hasn’t changed its purpose or its place in our calendar. It remains all about sporting excellence, qualifying for the next round and achieving the GLORY that can only come from winning a World Cup.

Furthermore, in order to promote competition between teams from different continents every year, FIH will launch in 2021 the FIH Intercontinental Cup, an annual event for the highest ranked teams not competing in the FIH Hockey Pro League. It will be an 8-team tournament in a single venue for each gender. The competing teams will be invited based on the FIH World Rankings at the end of the previous year’s FIH Hockey Pro League.

8. WILL THIS GENERATE MORE MONEY FOR HOCKEY AND WILL OTHER NATIONS WHO ARE NOT IN THE FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE BENEFIT?

We are confident that the increased commercial potential of the FIH Hockey Pro League will gen- erate substantially more value for the sport overall, which will filter down to all levels, including new and developing hockey nations, from elite to grassroots level.

Of course, this will take some time, but we believe the benefits will be measurable and wide rang- ing.

9. HOW WILL FANS BE ABLE TO WATCH, READ AND GET INFORMATION ABOUT THE FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE?

The ‘power of home’ is not just about where our games are held but has been fundamental to our discussions with broadcasters to establish a number of long-term ‘home broadcasters’.

These are channels committed to broadcasting and promoting the League, enabling fans to watch consistently and always know where the FIH Hockey Pro League is being broadcast. This marks a step change. In the past, broadcast has moved around making it difficult for fans to find hockey when they want to watch. At last, everyone now knows who the broadcaster/channels are in their home market so that fans can catch every minute of every match.

WWW.FIHPROLEAGUE.COM 15 Furthermore, the games are streamed live on FIH.live in every market where a broadcaster is not showing the match.

The FIH is also committed to substantially upgrading our web presence, allowing us to give fans more of the information and interaction that we know they love. The website will provide a load more stats, game data, live text reporting, match previews and reviews that we know Hockey fa- natics cannot get enough of. Our social media platforms will be packed with regular, unique and engaging content before and throughout the FIH Hockey Pro League, going deep behind the scenes allowing fans to get to know the athletes better.

We invite you to watch the matches live and follow all news about the FIH Hockey Pro League on all FIH digital platforms. Stay tuned for Hockey at its best!

Furthermore, the games will be live on FIH.live in every market where a broadcaster will not be showing the match.

FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 3 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 4 NOTABLE HONOURS 2x World Cup winners (2002, 2010), 2x Olympic silver medallists (2000, 2012), 2x Olympic bronze medallists (2004, 2008), Hockey World League champions (2015), 7x Champions Trophy winners (2001, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016), 7x Pan-American Games gold medallists (1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2019), 5x Pan-American Cup winners (2001, 2004, 2009, 2013, 2017).

ABOUT THE TEAM ‘Las Leonas’ (The Lionesses) have long been considered as one of the world’s most fearsome at- tacking teams and are undisputedly a true powerhouse of the game. Since the 2014 retirement of eight times FIH Player of the Year - unquestionably one of the greatest players in the history of the sport – Argentina have claimed numerous titles, including the 2016 Champions Trophy, the 2017 Pan-American Cup and the 2019 , with the latter sealing their spot at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. They were perhaps unlucky to finish fourth in the inaugural edition of the FIH Hockey Pro League, qualifying for the Grand Final event before suf- fering agonising shoot-out defeats against both Australia (semi-final) and Germany (third-place play-off).

Argentina’s current squad contains some true superstars of the global game. Goalkeeper Belen Succi is rated as one of the best in the business, while (nominee: FIH Player of the Year 2019), (FIH Player of the Year 2017), Maria Granatto (FIH Rising Star of the Year 2016 & 2017) as well as talented youngers Lucina von der Heyde (FIH Rising Star of the Year 2018) and (nominee: FIH Rising Star of the Year 2019) – are all exceptional outfield performers. The team is coached by charismatic tactician , the man who guided Argentina’s men to Olympic gold at Rio 2016 and also Las Leonas to World Cup glory in 2010.

ONE TO WATCH CARLA REBECCHI Returning to the international stage after a three-year absence and less than a year after starting a family, any questions about whether this wonderful attacker could still cut it at the top level were emphatically answered in 2019. She quickly proved that she had lost none of the skill, intelli- gence and frightening pace that made her both feared and respected in equal measure. Rebecchi scored seven times as Las Leonas claimed the title to seal their place at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. This genuine legend of Argentine hockey is now playing a crucial role in developing the next generation. FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE TEAM PAGE

FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 2 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 2 NOTABLE HONOURS 3x Olympic gold medallists (1988, 1996, 2000), 2x World Cup winners (1994, 1998), 3x World Cup silver medal- lists (1990, 2006, 2014), FIH Pro League silver medallists (2019), Hockey World League silver medallists (2012-13 Edition), 6x FIH Champions Trophy gold medallists (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2003), 4x Oceania champions (1999, 2001, 2005, 2013, 2015), 4x gold medallists (1998, 2006, 2010, 2014)

ABOUT THE TEAM Between 1994 and 2000, Australia were by far and away the best team on the planet, claiming two Olympic gold medals and two World Cups as the team coached by (and inspired by the on-field brilliance of current Netherlands women’s head coach ) ruled the hockey world. Now back up to number two in the FIH World Rankings, the Hockeyroos are once again a genuine powerhouse of the global game.

Under the guidance of head coach and former Australia men’s international , the team in green and gold have become one of the few teams capable of consistently challenging Annan’s all-conquering Netherlands side. Their squad is packed full of quality players, with de- fender and penalty corner expert , striker Emily Chalker and shot-stopper – nominated for the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year award both in 2018 and 2019 – all reliably outstanding performers. A silver medal behind the Netherlands in the inaugural FIH Hockey Pro League was a fine achievement, but they will be looking to go one better in 2020.

ONE TO WATCH RACHAEL LYNCH (GK) While the Hockeyroos are blessed with numerous high-quality players throughout their ranks, the superb goalkeeping displays of Rachael Lynch have garnered praise from everyone who has witnessed them. A brilliant shot-stopper and a true master of the shoot-out one-on-ones, Lynch – the highest capped Hockeyroos goalkeeper in history with over 220 senior international ap- pearances – is as much a match winner as any of her outfield compatriots. FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 12 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 5 NOTABLE HONOURS 2nd Place – Rabo EuroHockey Championships (2017), 3rd Place – Hockey World Cup (1978), 4th Place – EuroHockey Nations Championships (2013).

ABOUT THE TEAM Belgium were the lowest ranked of all the teams that competed in the inaugural edition of the FIH Hockey Pro League, but that did not stop them achieving some exceptional results. The Red Pan- thers defeated eventual silver medallists Australia both home and away, and also earned fine wins against Olympic champions Great Britain (home), New Zealand (away), USA (home) and China (home). Finishing fifth in the nine-team competition and ahead of four higher ranked nations, the 2017 European silver medallists certainly justified their place at the top table of international hockey.

As well as defeating China in the home fixture in Brussels, Belgium also claimed two points from a possible three in the away match in Changzhou, with the Red Panthers winning a shoot-out after regular time finished 3-3. These positive results gave the team coached by Niels Thijssen high hopes going into their FIH Hockey Olympic qualifier clash against China in Changzhou, but an agonizing shoot-out loss after the aggregate score-line finished 3-3 ended Belgium’s hopes of participating in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Despite that painful defeat, Belgium will be looking to remind everyone of their quality in the forthcoming FIH Hockey Pro League season and certainly have the players capable of doing the job. Team captain Barbara Nelen and fellow midfielder Alix Gerniers are both members of the 200-cap club, while forward Louise Versavel, goalkeeper Aisling D’Hooghe and teenage attacker Ambre Ballenghien were all outstanding per- formers in the first edition of the competition and will be looking to once again make their mark in season two.

ONE TO WATCH ALIX GERNIERS A star in midfield for the Red Panthers, Gerniers is an energetic and tireless player who creates and scores with regularity. The 26-year-old has made over 200 appearances for her country, be- ing a key player in the Belgium team that claimed European silver in 2017. Scored four times in the 2019 edition of the FIH Hockey Pro League, more than any other player in her team.

ABOUT THE TEAM Following their wonderful Olympic bronze medal success at Rio 2016, Germany have continued to look like a team that can challenge the very best in the world. They were terrific in 2019, win- ning bronze in the inaugural FIH Hockey Pro League, silver at the European championships and also securing their ticket to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 thanks to a comfortable victory over Italy in the FIH Hockey Olympic qualifiers. The team coached by former Belgian international Xavier Reckinger really are a class act, and they will be looking to achieve even more in 2020.

The team is captained by hugely experienced defender Janne Müller-Wieland (nominee: FIH Women’s Player of the Year 2019) while Anne Schröder, Lena Micheel, Elisa Gräve, Nike Lorenz (nominee: FIH Women’s Rising Star of the Year 2019) and goalkeeper Julia Sonntag are all out- standing performers. Stapenhorst sustained a serious knee injury in June 2019 that ruled her out for the remainder of the year, although with the Olympic Games on the horizon, Germany’s number 12 will be targeting a return to action during the coming FIH Hockey Pro League season.

FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 5 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 8 NOTABLE HONOURS Olympic gold medallists (2016), 2x Olympic bronze med- allists (1992, 2012), FIH Champions Trophy silver medal- lists (2012).

ABOUT THE TEAM If the Olympic champions of Rio 2016 are to defend their title at Tokyo 2020, a strong showing in the second edition of the FIH Hockey Pro League could prove to be an important step towards achieving that goal. Following Olympic gold medal-winning head coach Danny Kerry’s switch to the and Great Britain men’s programme in 2018, the responsibility for preparing GB for Tokyo is now in the hands of former Australian international striker , a man who worked wonders in New Zealand with the women’s Black Sticks team.

Great Britain’s performances in the inaugural edition of the FIH Hockey Pro League were well below expectations, winning just three matches outright and claiming two bonus point victories. However, they ended their campaign on a high note, defeating New Zealand 3-1 in front of 12,000 fans at the Twickenham Stoop. A 5-1 aggregate victory over Chile in the FIH Hockey Olympic qualifiers ensured that Great Britain will have the chance to defend their Olympic title, and the training group going into 2020 contains seven gold medallists from Rio 2016. Two-times FIH Goalkeeper of the Year , defensive trio Hollie Pearne-Webb, and Lau- ra Unsworth, midfielders and Shona McCallin and forward were all winners in Brazil, while star striker , another gold medalist from Rio, has rejoined the training squad after a long period on the sidelines due to a non-sport related head injury. While the majority of the Great Britain squad is made up of players who represent England, a trio of Scottish players and two from Wales also feature. Sarah Robertson, Amy Costello and Char- lotte Watson are all Scottish internationals, while Wales are represented by Sarah Jones and the remarkable Leah Wilkinson, who made her Great Britain debut in October 2019 at the age of 32 a few months after becoming the most capped Welsh sporting athlete of all time.

ONE TO WATCH LILY OWSLEY Blisteringly quick with an eye for goal, attacking star Lily Owsley is blessed with all of the attri- butes that give defenders nightmares. She made her senior international debut in 2013 at the age of 18 and within three years was a European and Olympic champion, with England and Great Britain respectively. Having only turned 25 in December 2019, Owsley’s best years may still be ahead of her. FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE TEAM PAGE

FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 1 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 1 NOTABLE HONOURS 3x Olympic gold medallists (1984, 2008, 2012), 2x Olympic silver medallists (2004, 2016), 3x Olympic bronze med- allists (1988, 1996, 2000), 8x World Cup winners (1974, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1990, 2006, 2014, 2018), FIH Hockey Pro League champions (2019), 2x Hockey World League champions (2012-14, 2016-17), 7x Champions Trophy win- ners (1987, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2018), 10x Eu- ropean champions (1984, 1987, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2017, 2019). ABOUT THE TEAM The Netherlands went into last year’s Vitality Hockey Women’s World Cup London 2018 as red-hot favourites and completely justified that status, defending the crown that they won in 2014 with a string of wonderful, record-breaking performances. Their dominance continued throughout 2019, storming to the inaugural FIH Hockey Pro League title before becoming European champions for a record tenth time. Head coach Alyson Annan, the legendary former Australia international and two-time FIH Player of the Year, has created a team very much in her own image: a perfect balance of outrageous talent, discipline and an unbreakable winning mentality.

With such a staggering run of form, it is little surprise that they will be seen as favourites not only to defend their FIH Hockey Pro League title but also for the gold medal at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. By using 33 different players on route to winning the inaugural Pro League title, Annan revealed the depth of the talent pool that she has at her disposal. Whilst emerging talent has unquestionably been given the chance to shine, there are certain players who simply cannot be ignored when it comes to their importance within the group. Captain and midfielder (nominee: FIH Player of the Year 2019), striker Frederique Matla (nominee: FIH Player of the Year & FIH Rising Star of the Year 2019) midfielder Xan de Waard and penalty corner ace Caia van Maasakker are all extraordinary talents, while 2015 FIH Women’s Player of the Year remains one of the most formidable attacking players on the planet. Can anyone stop the dazzling Dutch?

ONE TO WATCH EVA DE GOEDE In team full of superstars, it takes a player of rare quality to shine, but Netherlands captain Eva de Goede does just that. A defensive minded midfielder with a flawless skillset, De Goede’s ball running, tacking and visionary passes are a joy to behold. De Goede was named FIH Player of the Year for 2018 and has been shortlisted for the 2019 prize alongside compatriot Frederique Matla. FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE TEAM PAGE

ABOUT THE TEAM The Black Sticks have been outstanding performers over the last decade, regularly getting them- selves in contention for podium finishes. Fourth place finishes at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games split by a fifth-place finish at the 2014 Hockey World Cup has proven something of a frustration, but their gold medal success at the Gold Coast showed that they are more than capable of winning titles. The team once again found themselves sitting top of the podium in 2019, defeating host nation Australia at the Oceania Cup to guarantee their participation in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Brilliant attacking midfielder and team captain (nominee: FIH Women’s Player of the Year 2019) is widely regarded as the superstar of the Black Sticks squad that is blessed with seven players who have represented their country over 200 times. One of those players is (nominee: FIH Women’s Player of the Year 2019), who top scored in the inaugural FIH Hockey Pro League with 15 goals to enhance her reputation as one of the most ruthless finishers in world hockey. The team is coached by former Ireland international Graham Shaw, the man who guided Ireland to a remarkable silver medal at the FIH Women’s World Cup 2018, defying all ex- pectations with a team came into the event ranked 16th in the world. Shaw has been boosted by the return of several highly experienced former players, the most notable being four-time Olym- pian (née Sharland) and triple Olympian Gemma McCaw (née Flynn), adding even more talent and know-how to the group. It will be fascinating to see how they perform in 2020. ONE TO WATCH STACEY MICHELSEN Widely regarded as one of the world’s most skilful players, Stacey Michelsen has effortlessly transitioned from a defender into a midfielder in recent years and is very much the creative heartbeat of the Black Sticks team. The New Zealand captain was named FIH Young Player of the Year for 2011 and was shortlisted for the FIH Player of the Year Award in 2017 and 2019 re- spectively. FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE TEAM PAGE

FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 13 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 9 NOTABLE HONOURS Olympic bronze medallists (1984), Hockey World Cup bronze medallists (1994), bronze medallists (1995, 2016), Hockey Champions Chal- lenge gold medallists (2014), 2x Pan American Games gold medallists (2011, 2015), 5x Pan American Games silver medallists (1987, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007), 2x Pan American Games bronze medallists (1991, 2019), 4x Pan American Cup silver medallists (2001, 2004, 2009, 2013).

ABOUT THE TEAM By their own very high standards, USA endured a fairly difficult 2019. Their FIH Hockey Pro League campaign started in positive fashion, claiming a 2-2 away draw against Pan American rivals Ar- gentina before missing out on the bonus point by losing the shoot-out. From that point onwards the young Americans found points hard to come by in the inaugural season, amassing just sev- en in 16 matches to finish bottom of the standings in ninth position. A bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Lima was a positive sign, but the failure to defend the consecutive titles won in 2011 and 2015 meant that hopes of reaching the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 now rested sole- ly on the FIH Hockey Olympic qualifiers, where they faced a daunting away match against India in Bhubaneswar. A 5-1 first leg defeat against the hosts appeared to have ended USA’s Olympic dream, but a remarkable four goal burst in the first half of the second leg levelled the aggregate score at 5-5, with Amanda Magadan (2), captain Kat Sharkey and Alyssa Parker all on target. However, there was to be a sting in the tail, with India captain Rani breaking American hearts with a fourth quarter strike to give the home favourites the ticket to Tokyo.

It was recently announced that former Dutch international , who guided the team to a hugely impressive fifth place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, had left her position as USA’s head coach. However, her unwavering commitment to give young players the chance to shine on the international stage – 14 players who competed in the inaugural FIH Hockey Pro League were aged between 17 and 22 – may well benefit the USA international team for many years to come. In January 2020, USA named former United States defender Caro- line Nelson-Nicols - who earned 165 caps between 2007 and 2014, competing at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games - as the new women's head coach.

ONE TO WATCH ERIN MATSON Despite being only 19 years of age, Erin Matson has been a member of the USA senior women’s team since the middle of 2017 and has made a big name for herself with a series of outstanding performances. Equally comfortable in midfield or attack, Matson’s speed, skill, game intelligence and eye for goal makes her one of the most exciting young talents in world hockey. FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE TEAM PAGE

FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 4 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 5 NOTABLE HONOURS Olympic gold medallists (2016), FIH Men’s World Cup bronze medallists (2014), Hockey World League silver medallists (2017), 10x Pan American Games winners (1967, 1971, 1975, 1979, 1991, 1995, 2003, 2011, 2015, 2019), 3x Pan American Cup winners (2004, 2013, 2017), FIH Champi- ons Trophy bronze medallists (2008), 3x FIH Champions Challenge 1 winners (2005, 2007, 2012), winners (2008).

ABOUT THE TEAM For many years, Argentina’s men were hidden in the long shadow cast by the remarkable achieve- ments of their female counterparts. A bronze medal at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014 in The Hague (NED) changed everything, with Los Leones (The Lions) going on to claim Olympic gold – something that even Las Leonas (The Lionesses) have not achieved – at Rio 2016. Much of the recent success came under the guidance of charismatic head coach Carlos ‘Chapa’ Retegui, the man who achieved a unique double by leading both the men’s and women’s teams to World Cup bronze at the 2014 joint event in The Hague. While Retegui is no longer in the hot-seat – Ger- mán Orozco, who like Retegui is a former Argentina international, is the current head coach – the team very much remain amongst the favourites in the competitions that they enter.

The Argentina side is certainly not short of experience – the 18-player squad that claimed gold at the 2019 Pan-American Games in Lima (PER) contained eight players over the age of 30, includ- ing 34-year-old captain and goalkeeper Juan Vivaldi, who is 40. Both players are still producing astonishing performances, as are creative genius (nominee: FIH Men’s Player of the Year 2019) and the up-and-coming (nominee: FIH Men’s Rising Star of the Year 2019), two attackers capable of hurting any team in the world. A strong showing in the FIH Hockey Pro League would be a timely boost ahead of the Olympic title defence in Tokyo.

ONE TO WATCH LUCAS VILA Long considered one of the most naturally gifted attackers in world hockey, Vila has a reputation for scoring spectacular goals and always provides assists for his team-mates. The 33-year-old has been central to Argentina’s rapid rise up the FIH World Rankings table and played an instrumen- tal role in their Olympic success in 2016. FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE TEAM PAGE

ABOUT THE TEAM Over the past 20 years, the Kookaburras have been arguably Australia’s most consistently suc- cessful international sports team and, quite remarkably, they have ranked amongst the top four nations in the world for well over 30 years. With a staggering haul of silverware that includes a world record 15 Champions Trophy titles, six Commonwealth Games gold medals, three World Cups and an Olympic gold medal, Australia are always title contenders. In 2019, the team coached by former Kookaburras attacker – who won gold as a player at the 1986 FIH Men’s World Cup in Willesden, England - added two more titles to their collection, winning the inaugu- ral edition of the FIH Pro League before sealing qualification for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 with victory in the Oceania Cup.

Star players include versatile co-captains (nominee: FIH Men’s Player of the Year 2019) and (nominee: FIH Men’s Player of the Year 2019), while Jake Whetton, , and (nominee: FIH Men’s Rising Star of the Year 2019) are all regular scorers for the Kookaburras. As well as these wonderful outfield talents, the Aussies are also blessed with two exceptional goalkeepers in and (nominee: FIH Goalkeeper of the Year 2019). A successful defence of their FIH Hockey Pro League title would be a huge boost ahead of their quest for gold at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

ONE TO WATCH BLAKE GOVERS Blake Govers. After failing to score in his first four appearances in the 2019 FIH Hockey Pro League, Govers hit some serious form to net 12 times in 14 games to power the Kookaburras to the title. At the time of writing, the 23-year-old – brother of former Kookaburra Kieran - had scored a staggering 83 goals in 97 matches for his country, being a huge threat both from penalty corners and open play. FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 2 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 2 NOTABLE HONOURS World Cup winners – Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018, Olympic silver medallists (2016), Olympic bronze medallists (1920), FIH Hockey Pro League silver medallists (2019), Hockey World League silver med- allists (2015), European champions (2019), European sil- ver medallists (2013, 2017), European bronze medallists (2007), 5th place - Olympic Games (2012), 5th place - Ra- bobank Hockey World Cup (2014), 5th place - Hero Hock- ey Champions Trophy (2014). ABOUT THE TEAM Following their stunning triumph at the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018, few would dispute that the Red Lions are the hockey success story of the decade. In the years leading up to that glorious occasion in India, it had been a case of ‘so near, so far’ for this hugely gifted team. A silver medal at EuroHockey 2013, a silver medal at the 2015 Hockey World League Final and an Olympic silver medal at Rio 2016 were all clear indicators of the progress made by the team, which since October 2015 has been coached by cool-headed New Zealander Shane McLeod. It seemed only a matter of time before they landed a big title, and in Bhubaneswar they well and truly delivered, becoming champions of the world and topping the FIH World Rankings for the very first time. A silver medal behind champions Australia in the inaugural FIH Hockey Pro League saw them lose their status as the world’s top ranked team to the mighty Kookaburras. However, the pain of that loss was quickly forgotten when they claimed their first ever European title, overpowering Spain 5-0 in the final on home soil in Antwerp.

The Red Lions are blessed with numerous world class individuals including Rio 2016 silver med- allists Cedric Charlier, , (nominee: FIH Men’s Player of the Year 2019), John-John Dohmen (FIH Men’s Player of the Year 2016), , , Felix Denayer and shot-stopper Vincent Vanasch, who was named FIH Goalkeeper of the Year both in 2017 and 2018 and is also a nominee for the 2019 award. is huge threat from penalty corners, while the performances of midfield dynamo (nominee: FIH Men’s Player of the Year 2019) have certainly caught the eye of the past 12 months. With so much talent at their disposal, Belgium will feel that the FIH Hockey Pro League title will be theirs for the taking.

ONE TO WATCH ARTHUR VAN DOREN A key figure in the Red Lions team that won silver at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, defender Ar- thur Van Doren was named FIH Rising Star of the Year for 2016 before achieving a remarkable double at the start of 2018, taking both the FIH Player of the Year and Rising Star award. FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 6 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 6 NOTABLE HONOURS 4x Olympic gold medallists (1972, 1992, 2008, 2012), 2x FIH Men’s World Cup winners (2002, 2006), 9x Cham- pions Trophy winners (1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2007, 2014), 8x European champions (1970, 1978, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2011, 2013).

ABOUT THE TEAM The trophy haul achieved by Germany’s men’s team – known as ‘Die Honamas’ – down the years is intimidatingly impressive. Their four Olympic gold medals, two World Cups, eight European Championships and nine Champions Trophy titles provides clear evidence of their consistently excellent performances at the highest levels of international hockey. Long noted for their abil- ity to combine flair with organisational discipline and technical brilliance, the current Germany squad has all of these elements and is sure to be a real threat in the second edition of the FIH Hockey Pro League.

Germany were not at their best in the inaugural edition of the competition, finishing sixth out of the eight competing nations and suffering some notable defeats in the process, none worse than the 8-0 home loss at the hands of reigning world champions Belgium – who they had beaten in a shoot-out just ten days earlier – in June 2019. Away wins against the Netherlands, Great Britain and New Zealand were certainly amongst the highlights of the campaign, although their failure to claim a medal at the 2019 European Championships was swiftly followed by the departure of head coach Stefan Kermas. – who coached Germany’s women to Olympic glory in 2004 before doing the same with the men in 2008 and 2012 – took over role on an interim basis, safely guiding the team to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 with victory against Austria in the FIH Hockey Olympic qualifiers. Soon after, the highly regarded Kais al Saadi – a man who has held numerous coaching roles including assistant coach to Germany women from 2009 to 2012 – was given the head coach position on a permanent basis. With world class players such as , , Christopher Rühr, and Martin Häner to call upon, Al Saadi has inherited a squad packed with talent and will be aiming to get the very best out of the group over the upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League season. ONE TO WATCH CHRISTOPHER RÜHR A central figure in Germany’s Olympic bronze medal winning performance at Rio 2016, 26-year- old Christopher Rühr is a sensational attacker blessed with speed, skill, guile and supreme confi- dence. FIH WORLD RANKING (As of January 2020) 7 FINAL RANKING IN 2019 FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE: 4 NOTABLE HONOURS 2x Olympic gold medallists (1920, 1988), Olympic silver medallists (1948), 2x Olympic bronze medallists (1952, 1984), FIH Champions Trophy silver medallists (1985), 2x FIH Champions Trophy bronze medallists (1978, 1984).

ABOUT THE TEAM It has been 30 years since Great Britain’s men famously claimed the gold medal at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. With the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 on the horizon and Danny Kerry – the man who coach GB’s women to Olympic gold at Rio 2016 – in charge of capable group of players, could another success be just around the corner?

GB achieved some excellent results on their way to a fourth-place finish in the inaugural FIH Hockey Pro League, claiming away wins against Olympic champions Argentina, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and New Zealand. They also created some wonderful moments at home too, a highlight being their 2-0 victory against New Zealand in front of 12,000 fans on a magnificent occasion at the Twickenham Stoop, where pioneering technology was used to lay a temporary hockey pitch in a rugby stadium. (9 goals), Sam Ward (8) and Alan Forsyth (5) were in devastating goal-scoring form for Great Britain during the 2019 season, bagging 22 of the 39 goals scored by the team. While a serious and much publicized eye injury is likely to keep ace striker Ward out of action for much of the Pro League season, GB have fortunate enough to have other players who are capable of making a significant contribution to the scoreboard. Attackers and 20-year-old (nominee: FIH Rising Star of the Year 2019) are growing goal-scoring threats, while the 2019 return of all-time top scorer Ashley Jackson – who has 136 goals from 246 international matches – adds even more potency to this very dangerous Great Britain side.

ONE TO WATCH ASHLEY JACKSON One of the world’s most naturally gifted players, attacking midfielder Jackson possesses fantastic stick skills, a terrific eye for a pass and one of the finest penalty corner drag-flicks in the world. Returned to international hockey in 2019 after a three-year absence, performing as though he had never been away. FIH HOCKEY PRO LEAGUE TEAM PAGE

Between 1928 and 1980, they claimed Olympic gold on eight occasions, as well as one silver and three bronze. The team coached by Graham Reid – the former Australia international player who also coached the Kookaburras between 2014-16 – contains a large and gifted pool of players, with star defend- er , exciting youngster (nominee: FIH Men’s Rising Star of the Year 2019), ace goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and long-time captain Manpreet Singh (nominee: FIH Men’s Player of the Year 2019) all capable of having a big influence on the outcome of matches. ABOUT THE TEAM Spain have regularly produced sides that are capable of fighting for the biggest honours in the game, a fact proven by five silver medals at Olympic or World Cup level, not to mention two Euro- pean championships and a Champions Trophy title. Head coach and former France international Frédéric Soyez has instilled a wonderful work ethic into his team without sacrificing any of the flair that has been the signature of so many Spanish sides in the past. The Red Sticks produced some fine performances in the inaugural FIH Hockey Pro League before going on to win silver at the 2019 European Championships, being defeated by host nation and reigning world champions Belgium in the event final. Spain qualified for Tokyo 2020 in thrilling circumstances, with Soyez guiding the Red Sticks to a 6-5 aggregate victory over France, the country he represented 196 times.

While these elder statesmen are hugely influential in the current set-up, there is plenty of exciting talent emerging, with Enrique Gonzalez widely regarded as one of the hottest young properties in the game.

ONE TO WATCH ENRIQUE GONZALEZ Enrique Gonzalez. While there are plenty of candidates amongst the Spanish team who could be considered ‘ones to watch’, the rise of this precociously talented young attacker has certainly caught the eye.
