Falls short of forecast Germany’s economy rebounds in 2nd qtr BERLIN, Aug 5, (AP): Germany’s economy grew by 1.5% in the second quarter compared with the previous three- month period, picking up after a sharp fi rst-quarter fall but less strongly than expected. The fi gure released by the Federal Statistical Offi ce fell short of the 2% gain economists had forecast. In addition, the fi rst-quarter decline was sharper than previously report- ed - a 2.1% drop in gross domestic product, rather than the 1.8% reported in May. Second-quarter GDP was 9.2% higher than a year earlier, in price- and calendar-adjusted terms. Last year’s second quarter saw the strong initial impact of the coronavirus pan- demic on the German economy, Europe’s biggest. This year’s April-June period saw infections fl are up again and then decline to a very low level, prompting authorities to relax many restrictions, while the country’s vaccination campaign picked up speed. Despite the upturn, which was attributed to higher house- hold and government spending, the economy hasn’t yet re- turned to its pre-pandemic size. The statistics offi ce said GDP was still 3.4% lower in the second quarter than it was in the fi nal quarter of 2019, the last one before the pandemic started. Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING, said the gap be- tween upbeat confi dence indicators and the hard data was due to “the long list of supply chain frictions,” including the disruption caused by a ship blocking the Suez Canal and de- lays in the production and delivery of microchips and semi- conductors. Any new restrictions prompted by the more contagious delta variant of the coronavirus “could easily derail a further acceleration of the economy,” but signifi cant new restric- tions that could undermine economic activity aren’t likely with a national election due on Sept. 26, he added. Continu- ing supply chain issues and rising infl ation could also dent growth and spending. Despite those risks, “we expect the German economy to return to pre-crisis levels before the end of the year,” Brzeski said. The Federation of German Industries, Germany’s main industry lobby group, also warned of possible pitfalls ahead. “The global fourth corona wave and persistent delivery diffi culties with primary products threaten to endanger the still-intact German and European economic recovery in the second half,” the group’s director general, Joachim Lang, said in a statement. Rebounding global demand for infrastructure and manu- facturing software led to a sharp increase in orders in the April-June quarter at Munich-based Siemens AG, with an order from U.S. rail company Amtrak a large contributor. Siemens said orders saw “double-digit growth in all in- dustrial businesses and reporting regions.” The engineering and manufacturing company raised its outlook for its fi scal year, joining Volkswagen and Airbus in raising their predictions for business performance amid a global recovery from the worst of the pandemic shutdowns in the April-June quarter a year ago. Siemens cautioned that its business could be affected by the same shortage of semiconductors for electronic compo- nents that has forced production cutbacks among automak- ers. It said it was also seeing higher costs for raw materials, parts and freight services. The company said its order book increased by 47% to 20.5 billion euros ($24.2 billion). The fi gure was boosted by 2.8 billion euros in contracts awarded by Amtrak for 73 trains to be built at the company’s factory in Sacramento, California. The order book also benefi tted from an order for passen- ger coaches in the Czech Republic and a signaling system in Taiwan.

Penguins habitat at risk Summer of extremes hits wealthier places

NEW YORK, Aug 5, (AP): As the world staggers through another summer of extreme weather, experts are noticing something different: 2021s onslaught is hitting harder and in places that have been spared global warming’s wrath in the past. Wealthy countries such as the United States, Canada, Ger- many and Belgium are joining poorer and more vulnerable nations on a growing list of extreme weather events that sci- entists say have some connection to human-caused climate change. “It is not only a poor country problem, it’s now very ob- viously a rich county problem,” said Debby Guha-Sapir, founder of the international disaster database at the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters at Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. “They (the rich) are get- ting whacked.” Killer fl oods hit China, but hun- dreds of people also drowned in parts of Germany and Belgium not used to being inundated. Love rekindled Real-life Bennifers fi nd happy endings

NEW YORK, Aug 5, (AP): They’re getting cozy on a yacht off Saint-Tropez. They’re cuddling on a walk in the Hamptons. They’re nuzzling over sushi at dinner in Malibu. If PDA were an Olympic sport, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affl eck would be champs. But there’s something more that’s driving interest in Bennifer: the storybook nature of long-lost love requited. The A-listers rekindled their romance 17 years after they broke up in 2004. It’s a familiar road to countless couples who came together years after coming apart. The two stars spoke of intense tabloid pressure as a factor in calling off their engagement way back when, with Lopez telling People in 2016: “I think different time, different thing, who knows what could’ve hap- pened? But there was a genu- ine love there.” While the tabloids aren’t an issue for regular folk who have rekindled, the genuine love part is universal no mat- ter what got in the way the fi rst time around. “She never left my thoughts. There was something about her, something about her soul, Lopez her spirit, that I felt like I was just drawn to even as I got older,” said 43-year-old Matt Escobar Sr. of his wife, Jessica. The Merced, California, couple — he a youth center program director and she a nurse — met in eighth- grade math class after Escobar was sent to live with an uncle just outside Seattle to escape his troubled youth in New York. They had their fi rst kiss on a walk in the woods that year, but Escobar’s wayward behavior continued, including arrests for robbery and assault. He was ex- pelled and sent back East, where he landed in a deten- tion facility. More trouble followed, including a stint on the Former Beatle George Harrison performs during the Bob Dylan anniversary concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Oct. 16, 1992.
