TINA SCORE OUR 57th CARNIVAL QUEEN

Saturday, 1st October

Price 50p Lucky Programme Ng 000 598 · A Message From The President Of Shaftesbury Carnival Committee Carnivals such as ours are an invaluable way of improving the community. Perhaps more important it enables us to welcome overseas visitors and people from other towns. I have no doubt you will find the 1994 Carnival quite fascinating. Enjoy yourselves and take care. Geoffrey Hughes

A Message From The Chairman Of Shaftesbury Carnival Committee Shaftesbury carnival is here once more and again, I as the chairman, state the importance of Shaftesbury Carnival Motto "DO BEST CAN", as very much the statement which carries Shaftesbury Carnival from year to year. Last year we had a very successful carnival and I am hoping this year we can repeat the success. The carnival is a great team effort of the community spirit. From the spectators to the committee who organise the events or the competitors to carnival sponsors. Without either, Shaftesbury Carnival could not take place. Also our Carnival Queen and Princess and the Attendants. A big thank you to you all. Alan Imber A Message From The Wessex Chairman Welcome to Carnival '94 Over the winter and into the spring the chrysalis floats and costumes of the new season slowly but surely become the brilliant butterflies of September and October. I hope you will appreciate once again, the dedicated effort and enthusiasm which have gone into creating this multi-coloured spectacle. Let us make this the year that we applaud each entry as it passes. I am sure that this would encourage our entertainers to give of their best efforts. Finally, might I ask that you respond also to the collectors along the route and give, as generously as you can, bearing in mind the quality of the entertainment you are getting for your money. Have a safe and happy Carnival. Stanley W. Light

SPONSORS OF BANDS and PRIZES FOR ENTRANTS We would like to thank all the traders, both in the town and in the surrounding villages, for their generous donations in this difficult time. The bands we all enjoy watching cost a great deal of money and, with the prize money for the floats etc. total well in excess of £1300.00. Without the support of our local traders, the committee would not be able to support the beneficiaries in the way we have become well known for. The names on these pages are all of our sponsors for the band and prize money. Please accept the printer's apologies if any name is inadvertently left out in the printing process . . High Street The beneficiaries of this year's carnival are: THE SAMARITANS: The Shaftesbury friends of the Samaritans were formed earlier this year with the aim of helping to support the local Samaritans by way of fund-raising. The cost of providing a 24 hour, 365 days a year phone line, totally confidential for those in our area who are at their wits end with, they feel, nowhere to tum for help, runs into tens of thousands of pound a year, even though the phones are manned by volunteers. These volunteers are known only by Christian names to protect their anonymity, put in a massive commitment to ensure the service continues and have to be supported in their work by the "friends", as the whole Samaritan operation is funded by fund-raising. The Shaftesbury friends are extremely grateful to the Carnival committee for allowing the Samaritans to be a beneficiary this year. It has given them a tremendous boost in their "infant" months. We are desperately short of help for the friends so if anybody could spare a little of their time or expertise to help the cause, please contact Derek Beer on 853178. BARTON HILL ADVENTURE PLAY AREA: The project was born in 1987 by a group of people keen to see the recreation field at Barton Hill developed into a good central play area for children of all ages in and around Shaftesbury. The first part of the project to be given permission by Town Council to build was the fort area. This is now near completion. All work in the construction has been carried out by half a dozen keen local dads on a voluntary basis. Back in 1987 the carnival kindly donated a sum of money to our committee to get it off the ground. We are now at the stage when we require more funds to purchase play equipment for the under 7s and over 7s play areas. Please help the carnival so that they can help us once again to secure a much appreciated play area for all children. Ray Humphries. Chairman. THE FRIENDS OF SHAFTESBURY ABBEY: The friends, with membership open to all, help to raise money for various projects to enhance the famous site behind the big wall on Park Walk. People come from all over the world to see the ruins of the great Abbey founded by King Alfred, to look at the museum collection and to enjoy the peaceful gardens. The museum is now old-fashioned in all sorts of ways and the Abbey board and friends are embarking on the task of building a new one, with modern display techniques and, perhaps a new room which can be hired for meetings by other town organisations. Above all, the abbey is a happy place to visit, especially for families. Everyone is welcome to enjoy this great asset of the town, and we hope, to give a little towards the new museum project, attracting even more visitors, and business, into the town. Jean Hart. Chairman THE AIR AMBULANCE: This is a helicopter ambulance which is used locally in such cases where it is impossible for ordinary ambulance to reach the patient or where time is essential in getting to the hospital. Over £1000,000 has to be raised each year to continue the service, which this year has to be achieved by voluntary contributions. The Air Ambulance appeal is very grateful to the carnival committee for their support this year. The Shaftesbury Carnival Committee will also be supporting the Cedars Nursing Home, which provides nursing home facilities for the Shaftesbury, Gillingham and Sturminster Newton area, including beds for sufferers of senile dementia and Alzheimer's Disease CARNIVAL DAY PROGRAMME OF EVENTS
