Due to its prolific flower and fruit production, it was introduced into subtropical areas such as Florida and Hawai’i, where it is now naturalized and invasive. In an effort to find sustainable means to control R. tomentosa, a large-scale survey was mounted for biological control organisms. -

Besides an illustrated account of their genitalia, diagnostics of these subfamilies, genera and species are also provided. It attacks both wild and cultivated crops and leafy vegetables with large leaves. Damage symptoms Grubs bite into stems, feed on pith region making irregular zigzag tunnels and fill with excreta. Stems split longitudinally. Plants dry completely. Adult feeds on tender leaves, makes circular holes in stems, branches and mid-ribs. Attack causes stunting of plants, twisting and swelling of branches and stem and suppression of shoot and leaf production. 1 Bionomics Females lay eggs singly in each hole and cover holes with secretion. A female lays 30-34 smooth, oval and pale yellow eggs, egg period 4 to 10 days. A single stem contains 17-20 grubs in it. Grubs are stout, curved, apodous and white in colour. Grub stage lasts for 12 - 24 days. Full- fed grubs form a greyish-brown hard compact gall like chamber and pupate therein. On emergence, they remain inside the stem for 5 to 6 days, then cut epidermal membrane and emerge out. -

Ihle, sp. nov. and Kunugia labahingra Zolotuhin, sp. nov.) are described here as new. 39 species are listed for Laos for the first time. Preimaginal stages for some species are firstly described and illustrated. The Lasiocampidae fauna of Laos is poorly known and just a very few specimens have been collected from there until past few decades. But since 2004 very interesting material has been obtained by Thomas Ihle that allow us to propose a first part of an annotated list of the species from the country. Laos’s unique lepidopterous composition is the result of its fortunate geographical position. Being situated between Thailand and Vietnam, it should be considered to be a specific bridge between zoogeographical complexes of both countries. Most part of the country is mountainous. Gneiss and granite ridges of middle high are typical for the north. Plateau Jarres with highest point Bia as 2820 m is situated here in winding of Mekong. Single dome-shaped crests of 1500-2711 m are typical for Annam Mountains on the east of the country. On the south of Laos, a basalt plateau Bolovens with peaks up to 1572 m is situated. -

8Aorl Oommunication SOME FIELD OBSERVATIONS ON A LEPIDOPTEROUS PEST MET.AN.ASTRIA HYRTAOA CRAMER (FAMILY LASIOCAMPIDAE) Metanastria hyrtaca Cramer, a lasiocampid moth, is typically noctur nal both in respect of its adult as well as immature stages. During a course of general field studies on pests of Jaman tree Syzygium cumini (Linn.) Skeels (Syn. Eugenia jambolana Lamk.) in late June, 1984, it was observed that a large number of caterpillars (over a hundred in numbers) and later identified as belonging to this species, had been forming a gregarious assemblage on the tree trunk at about two feet from the ground level. The place of assemblage invariably changed everyday from as close as two feet to about five feet from the ground level. However, later in the next generation the caterpillars were found to congregate upto as high as ten feet from the ground level. The first group contained caterpillars as small as two cm long and one-third cm wide and as big as seven cm long and one cm wide. Since the emergence of the first-stage larvae has not been observed, the author is not aware of the measurements of the smallest caterpillar of the group in this species, but obviously the larger ones belonged to the late·l~rval stages, as the process of pupation among the caterpillars started around first week of July, 1984 and continued till the first week of August, 1984. It was interesting to observe that all the caterpillars remained inactive, almost motionless, throughout the day. It may be mentioned here that almost all the caterpillars had their head pointing downwards. -
