Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich SERBIAN ORTHODOX APOSTLE TO AMERICA by Hieromonk Damascene . A A U S during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, Archimandrite B Sebastian Dabovich has the distinction of being the first person born in the United States of America to be ordained as an Orthodox priest, 1 and also the first native-born American to be tonsured as an Orthodox monk. His greatest distinction, however, lies in the tremen- dous apostolic, pastoral, and literary work that he accomplished dur- ing the forty-eight years of his priestly ministry. Known as the “Father of Serbian Orthodoxy in America,” 2 he was responsible for the found- ing of the first Serbian churches in the New World. This, however, was only one part of his life’s work, for he tirelessly and zealously sought to spread the Orthodox Faith to all peoples, wherever he was called. He was an Orthodox apostle of universal significance. Describing the vast scope of Fr. Sebastian’s missionary activity, Bishop Irinej (Dobrijevic) of Australia and New Zealand has written: 1 Alaskan-born priests were ordained before Fr. Sebastian, but this was when Alaska was still part of Russia. 2 Mirko Dobrijevic (later Irinej, Bishop of Australia and New Zealand), “The First American Serbian Apostle—Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich,” Again, vol. 16, no. 4 (December 1993), pp. 13–14. TOWARD THE HEALING OF MEMORIES AND CHANGING OF PERCEPTIONS: CHURCHES IN SERBIA AND GERMANY IN DIALOGUE A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Angela V. Ilić MAY 2012 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Leonard J. Swidler, Advisory Chair, Department of Religion Dr. Terry Rey, Department of Religion Dr. John C. Raines, Department of Religion Dr. Paul B. Mojzes, Rosemont College Dr. Kyriakos M. Kontopoulos, External Reader, Department of Sociology © by Angela Valeria Ilić 2012 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines a series of interchurch consultations that took place between 1999 and 2009 with the participation of the Evangelical Church in Germany, the Roman Catholic German Bishops’ Conference and the Serbian Orthodox Church. The Protestant-Catholic-Orthodox ecumenical encounters began in the immediate aftermath of the Kosovo crisis, and aimed to support Serbia’s democratization and European integration. At a total of nine meetings, delegates from the participating churches, together with politicians, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and scholars from various fields, discussed the role of churches and religion in the two countries. The meetings provided a forum for exchanging knowledge and addressing the challenges confronting the churches and their social organizations. Through lectures, discussions, and meetings in working groups, the consultations focused on theological, legal, political, and social topics, such as church and state relations in Serbia, the role of churches in secularized society, Serbia’s relationship to the rest of Europe, reconciliation, and the healing of memories. Focusing on the content and the outcomes of the consultations, the author places them into the broader ecumenical, social and political context in which they took place.

  • Zemun Magistracy
fond maker history: Zemun Magistracy Local authority in Zemun, organized as Magistracy is set and established in 1751, right after Zemun became Free Military Community in 1749. Before Magistracy establishment, Zemun was under Ottomans rule from 1521 until 1717, and more as Christian than Muslim settlement; short time belonged under Vienna’s Court Chamber, from 1717 until 1728. It was also in private possession of Šenborn family including: Batajnica, Surčin, Dobanovci, Jakovo, Boljevci, Kupinovo, Obrež, Ogar, Karlovčić, Prahovo, Pećinci, Golubinci, Popinci and Vojka, until it was bought and associated with the Military Border 1749, as many assets in Srem, in fear of Ottomans invasion after they have already conquered Belgrade 1739. In development of the City Government in Zemun we can differentiate two periods: from establishment in 1751until 1871, when this institution performs as Zemun Magistracy, and period from 1871 until 1934 when it performed under different name as City Government in Zemun with some changes made in its organization. The Military Border, border area of Croatia and Slavonic, populated with Serbs, Croat, Romanians, Hungarians and number of Germans, organized as administration on military principle since XV century in purpose of defense from Ottoman Turks, during the rule of Maria Teresa (1746 – 1747) was divided on 5 border areas: Karlovac, Varaždin, Banat, Slavonia, Erdelj. Borders were divided on regiments, battalions, captaincy and municipalities. Zemun belonged to the Regiment of Petrovaradin, which represented Croat – Slavonic Border, together with Gradiška and Brod. In 1755, Zemun, as free Military Border, was extracted from the Regiment and directly subordinated to the command. From 1851 until 1869 it was in constitution of Serb – Banat Military Border.

  • 10. Daily Urban System of Belgrade Srboljub Stamenković, Dragica Gatarić
GeograFF 8 10. Daily urban system of Belgrade Srboljub Stamenković, Dragica Gatarić The explanation of the dominant characteristics of daily urban system of Belgrade, which represents the main functional knot of the Republic of Serbia by the functional capac- ity as well as by the spatial range of daily interaction of people, capital and information, we have based on studying the spatial-demographic and settlement aspects of daily migrations of labour, pupils and students. Both our and previous experiences in study- ing the phenomenon of daily migrations of the population in Serbia have been based exclusively or in the most of the cases on the field-work researches of daily circulations of people, its territorial framework and structural characteristics. Those researches have mainly local, sub-regional and regional character. As such, they enable the partial study of smaller daily urban systems. The scientific notions on daily urban systems and their function are modest because of that and mostly imbued by ‘whiteness’, if it can be said so. After all, it has been stated for many times in scientific discussions that the existing theoretical and empirical notions on population migrations, and also on daily migrations in geographical studies of the settlement net (Stamenković, 1996), are partial, insufficient and mainly imprecise, as well as that their study is handicapped by the imperfection of the theory (Petrovic, Blagojević, 1989). Moreover, in science, as in the European and world relations (Gottmann,1961; Berry, 1964; Lee, Mc Donald, 2003) so in the scientific researches in Serbia, the significance and the need of studying the phenomena of daily migrations of the population and daily (local) urban systems have been emphasized for many times (Stamenković, 1998; Tošić, Nevenić, 2007).

  • Direction of Ancient Orthodox Churches in the Republic of Serbia North from the Sava and the Danube

These are medieval churches, or churches erected on the founda- tions of medieval churches, most of which katholikons, concentrated on the slopes of Fruška gora (“the Serbian Athos”). The main axes of all analysed churches (a total of 23) are located in the east sector of the horizon, i.e. they were all built according to the rule dictating that a church axis should be directed towards “the rising sun”. The axes of four churches could not be directed towards the rising sun (towards the rising sun on the physical horizon). The axes of three churches are directed towards the equinox East, while the axes of the others, with one exception only, deviate towards NE (among which two with solstice direction). Based on the observed general deviation towards NE, it can be assumed that the church axes were directed, on their founding, towards the rising sun in spring, mostly around Annunciation. Key words: church direction, Medieval Serbia, Fruška gora, monasteries

Matejic visited Hilan dar during the last days of December 1969 and the first part of January 1970. At this time he was assured that permission for microfilming manu scripts in the Hilandar Monastery would be granted to him: he was allowed to photograph samples of manuscripts, icons and frescoes.
