A Gergely András: „Arab”
A.GERGELY ANDRÁS „ARAB” VILÁGZENE, AVAGY A RAÏ ZENEI SZCÉNÁJA (2/1.) A megfontolásokat két dimenzióban próbálom tárgyalni. Először egy ismeretközlő, „népszerűsítő” áttekintés, publicisztikus mű ismertetésével, majd második körben egy térségi zenei övezet korszakos sodrásával igyekszem bemutatni egy szórakoztató (de nemcsak), divatos (de annál tradicionálisabb), térségi-tájegységi (ám akként a Mediterránum szinte egészét átható, Európa nyugati felén is széles sávban hódító) zenei jelenség mibenlétét. -
Fresh Dressed
PRESENTS FRESH DRESSED A CNN FILMS PRODUCTION WORLD PREMIERE – DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE Running Time: 82 Minutes Sales Contact: Dogwoof Ana Vicente – Head of Theatrical Sales Tel: 02072536244 [email protected] 1 SYNOPSIS With funky, fat-laced Adidas, Kangol hats, and Cazal shades, a totally original look was born— Fresh—and it came from the black and brown side of town where another cultural force was revving up in the streets to take the world by storm. Hip-hop, and its aspirational relationship to fashion, would become such a force on the market that Tommy Hilfiger, in an effort to associate their brand with the cultural swell, would drive through the streets and hand out free clothing to kids on the corner. Fresh Dressed is a fascinating, fun-to-watch chronicle of hip-hop, urban fashion, and the hustle that brought oversized pants and graffiti-drenched jackets from Orchard Street to high fashion's catwalks and Middle America shopping malls. Reaching deep to Southern plantation culture, the Black church, and Little Richard, director Sacha Jenkins' music-drenched history draws from a rich mix of archival materials and in-depth interviews with rappers, designers, and other industry insiders, such as Pharrell Williams, Damon Dash, Karl Kani, Kanye West, Nasir Jones, and André Leon Talley. The result is a passionate telling of how the reach for freedom of expression and a better life by a culture that refused to be squashed, would, through sheer originality and swagger, take over the mainstream. 2 ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS SACHA JENKINS – Director Sacha Jenkins, a native New Yorker, published his first magazine—Graphic Scenes & X-Plicit Language (a ‘zine about the graffiti subculture)—at age 17. -
BIO Born Matthew Fowler on Feb. 17, 1975, Producer Mumbles Has Lived
BIO Born Matthew Fowler on Feb. 17, 1975, producer Mumbles has lived a life rich with musical diversity and spiritual inspiration. Raised in a family of professional jazz musicians along with older brother Marvin Fowler (Dj Marvski) of the U.N.I.T.Y. Committee, Mumbles developed an ear for jazz and hip-hop music from an early age. His father, Steve Fowler, a professional flute and sax player, along with uncles Bruce, Tom, Walt, and Ed formed a musical legacy spanning from the early 70's with the band, the Fowler Brothers. They played with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Bobby McFerrin, Linda Rondstadt, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, James Taylor and Brian Setzer, to name just a few. Being raised in such a diverse and musically stimulating environment, Mumbles tuned his ear early to the complexity of rhythm, melody and harmony. With the influence of his brother Marvski, he turned his attention to hip-hop music from the age of 5 (1980) and never turned back. In the late 1980's, Marvski along with Cut Chemist, Chali 2na, and Marc 7 formed the innovative group U.N.I.T.Y. Committee, which later along with the Rebels of Rhythm turned into the group Jurassic 5. It was during these pivotal years that Mumbles, being inspired by the production and record collections of Marvksi and Cut Chemist, decided to embark on his own mission of record digging, sampling, and beat construction. What started out lightly quickly turned into the digging obsession that most hip-hop producers are familiar with. -

My central argument is that a close and comparative reading of the role of this cultural figure in the American context, anchored in three representative cases from Argentina—a dictatorship, Mexico—a nominal democracy, and Puerto Rico—a colonially-occupied and minoritized community within the United States, reveals that the liberal idealization of the subject of human rights relies upon the implicit pedagogical regulation of an educable subject of human rights. -

A great deal of attention has been given in recent years to the way that Arab satellite television has emerged as a transnational political force. But very new commentators have bothered to study how this news is being received, how it shapes a nebulous "Arab" world or Arab community, and especially, to the fact that most of what is projected on satellite television is not news at all. From the beginning, soap operas, talk shows, music videos and serials have dominated most satellite programming. -

Adopting a broad definition of “the testimonial world” to encompass fictional and documentary literature and film, the pages that follow focus on testimonial work in Latin America from 1969-1991. By exploring testimonial’s narrative qualities, historical relationship to ethnography and memoir, and attention to gender and ethnicity, this study considers the symbolic re-representation of violence in testimonial texts and the ethics (and the reader’s ethical position) they advocate, particularly in positioning the reader as responsible to an “other” who is a victim of violence. -

Echo: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 1 (Spring 2003) Nasser Al-Taee University of Tennessee, Knoxville “In rai, there are always enemies, always problems.” Dijillai, an Algerian fan (Shade-Poulsen 124) 1. It is no coincidence that rai surged onto the Algerian popular music landscape during the 1980s, a time in which Islamic reformists brought about new challenges to the political, cultural, and artistic scenes in the developing country. [Listen to an example of rai.] Caught between tradition and modernization, and reacting to the failure of socialism and its inability to appeal to the majority of the Algerian masses, the country sank into a brutal civil war between the military- backed regime and Islamic conservatives demanding a fair democratic election. Algerian rai artists responded by expressing disenchantment with their country’s situation through a modernized genre largely based on its traditional, folk-based, sacred ancestor. In Arabic rai means “opinion,” a word reflecting the desire for freedom of speech and expression, values that have been subjected to extreme censorship by non-democratic Arab governments. Currently, rai is associated with an emerging youth culture and the new connotations ascribed to the genre reflect 1 Echo: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 1 (Spring 2003) tenets of liberalism that depart from the past. In its newly adopted form, rai represents an alternative mode of protest and liberation. 2. When new rai began to achieve popularity in Algeria and Europe in the late 70s and early 80s, rai artists and the conservative factions were at odds with each other because of their conflicting ideological positions. -
