Send requests to: [email protected] From the Pastor: Father Michael Skluzáček January 6, 2019 The Epiphany of the Lord The Gift of Presence The bishops of the six dioceses in Minnesota (St. Paul and Minneapolis, Crookston, Duluth, St. Cloud, New Ulm, Winona-Rochester) have designated the Solemnity of the Epiphany as “Immigration Sunday Min- nesota.” The U.S. bishops have designated January 6-12, 2019 as “National Migration Week.” On this Twelfth Day of Christmas we recall the story of the “Magi from the East” who travelled far from their home country to find the Christ Child. Once they found him in Bethlehem, they were welcomed as they shared their gifts with their newfound friends. The Three Kings were like migrants, travelling a long way from their home country for a very specific purpose. They found hospitality at their destination, Bethlehem. The mystery of the Epiphany has much to teach us about the virtue of hospitality. We are focusing on hospitality this year at St. John’s, inviting all parishioners to welcome friend and stranger alike in our par- ish. The Three Kings teach us the importance of welcoming the stranger and being enriched by an encounter with new people. The Magi were not so welcome in Jerusalem. Herod saw the king they were seeking as a threat and sought to use the Magi to find him so he could eliminate him. But when the Magi arrived in Bethle- hem, they were welcomed. Mary and Joseph welcomed them, offered them hospitality, and they shared gifts. The Magi offered gifts to the Christ Child, and Jesus gave them the gift of his divine presence. One of the winning posters in our Knights of Columbus sponsored “Keep Christ in Christmas” poster contest declared, “As many wait for presents, we await the Lord’s Presence.” The presence of the Lord Jesus is the greatest gift we have been given. We adore that presence at every Mass, in our Adoration Chapel and in the tabernacle. Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. Just being in the presence of Jesus is a great gift. Our presence is also a gift to others. Recall your Christmas celebrations, and loved ones visiting from afar. What did you enjoy more, the present they gave you, or their presence? We love being in the presence of those we love. That is the gift of hospitality – to share the gift of our presence with others. During this New Year, let’s seek to grow in the virtue of hospitality in our parish. Let’s find ways to share the gift of our presence with others. Perhaps we can do that by reaching out to get to know someone at church whom we don’t yet know. Perhaps you’re not accustomed to going to St. Joseph Hall after Mass for hospitality. You might try going once a month, or every so often. There’s great food as well! Introduce your- self to someone and find out who they are. Share something of your life with them and ask them about their life. Another suggestion is to come to the monthly new parishioner gathering – all are welcome! Meet our new parishioners, introduce yourself, and let them know how glad you are to have them in our parish. Welcoming the stranger is one of the corporal works of mercy. The Magi were strangers when they arrived in Bethlehem, but they became friends of Jesus after being welcomed by Mary and Joseph.

Pastor Rich Harris After God’s Heart Part 2—Take the Power Back 6.20.2021 USING THIS SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE We have provided all the Scriptures references in the sermon and some discussion questions for you to use to discuss the weekend message. This Sermon Discussion Guide is only a tool to aid you in meeting the needs of your group. For most groups, there are too many questions to answer in one session together. Give priority to the needs and pace of your group members. While the questions are important, remember your group’s goal is to create an atmosphere that will foster true friendships. Use the discussion questions as you see fit but emphasize the relationships. (Review) A heart after God is defined by these three things: 1. Complete trust and dependence on God 2. A heart of worship 3. A heart that always returns to God [1 Samuel 16:13-14, NIV] 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah. [1 Samuel 16:14, ESV] Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. [Acts 23:14, ESV] 14 They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul.” BIBLICAL DISCLAIMERS (from 1 Samuel 16)— 1) The Holy Spirit will never leave you.

Celebrate The Carillon Nurture The Newsletter of Trinity United Methodist Church Serve A Message from the Pastor Let’s Cross the River Together I imagine that after 40 years they were all exhausted. They were tired of the almost-there announcement that Moses would make every so often, telling them that the Promised Land was almost within their reach. They were tired of the sun-dried days in the desert. They were Trinity Church is a congregation tired of walking and never arriving. They were tired of putting up their of The United Methodist tents and taking them down. Basically, every day was a reminder that Church and is a Reconciling they were not yet home. Long journeys have a way of exhausting us Congregation. and wearing our souls. I think that is why one of the things that we read in the books of Exodus through Deuteronomy is about their murmuring and WHAT’S INSIDE complaining to Moses: not enough food and water, no meat, where is God? Not the way things used to be, not good enough leadership from Moses, and on and on. I don’t know how many times they complained, Pastor’s Message , Giving Link 1 but to be honest, I don’t blame them. It was a longer journey than they had expected; but I am sure they also had good days when they were Prayers, Thanks, Sympathy, Congratulations 2 immensely grateful to God for God’s presence and provision. • So That the World Will Know New Hope CHANGE LIVES
March 2012 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page AS KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Knights of Columbus WE ARE THE HANDS AND FEET Washington State Council OF CHRIST WE ARE OUR 2011-2012 Bulletin BROTHERS KEEPER WE SAVE LIVES AND So That the World will Know New Hope CHANGE LIVES Message from State Deputy, Bear the Light of Christ Don McBride I’m going to apologize in advance because I suspect I’m going to be a little bit long-winded this month. But trust me, there’s a lot of great information to cover and I think it’s important to share. I’ll spend a bit of time on membership, on our chaplains, and on legislative activities/updates. And in some ways, they’re all related. First off, I have great news in the growth of our state council: congratulations go out to our 151st council, St. Anne Council 15462 in Tacoma! DD22 Frank Hyke, Westside NCD Chairman Eugene Daly, Charter GK Don Wells, and Chaplain Fr. Tuan Nguyen are commended for their efforts to bring this council to fruition. In membership, we’re making our move! I was gratified in the last few days to watch our progress in membership growth surpass the 50% mark toward our intake goal for the year. I’ve intentionally avoided focusing on numbers in our discussions thus far, but we’re now at a point where a little bit of math serves us well. The goal of membership growth isn’t just an abstraction, and it isn’t just about achieving a target; it’s about creating a force that can effectively influence the world around us.

Amen" !'ANNIVERSARY DO<RS 11 INTRODUCTION A professor of homiletics at Boston University's School of The- ologr once offered us a bit of advice on preaching. He said, 11 Always announce a Biblical text at the beginning of your sermon" and then with a twinkle in hi.s eye, he added, "It will give the people something to think about while you're preaching". So, here it is. The text is from the Book of' Revelation, Chapter 3. Verses 20 and 23. "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him and he with Me". "He who has an ear to hear, let him hear." DEVELOPMENT It's good to be wtth you once again! The last time I was here was last September for the Memorial Service for our beloved Lyn don Woodside, our Choir Director and Organist for 38 years. It's hard for me to realize that he is no longer over here behind me where he did his \otork so magnifi icently for so many years.
