Near, and Jakob Vinther ABSTRACT Dating the tree of life is a core endeavor in evolutionary biology. Rates of evolution are fundamental to nearly every evolutionary model and process. Rates need dates. There is much debate on the most appropriate and reasonable ways in which to date the tree of life, and recent work has highlighted some confusions and complexities that can be avoided. Whether phylogenetic trees are dated after they have been estab- lished, or as part of the process of tree finding, practitioners need to know which cali- brations to use. We emphasize the importance of identifying crown (not stem) fossils, levels of confidence in their attribution to the crown, current chronostratigraphic preci- sion, the primacy of the host geological formation and asymmetric confidence intervals. Here we present calibrations for 88 key nodes across the phylogeny of animals, rang- ing from the root of Metazoa to the last common ancestor of Homo sapiens. Close attention to detail is constantly required: for example, the classic bird-mammal date (base of crown Amniota) has often been given as 310-315 Ma; the 2014 international time scale indicates a minimum age of 318 Ma. Abstract The otoliths described in this study from the Late Eocene to Early Oligocene (biozone P18) of the Kishima Formation near Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, represent the earliest record of fossil otoliths from Japan and in fact the entire Northwest Pacific. They were obtained from outcrops along the Shimohirano River. A total of 13 otolith-based teleost taxa are recognized, 11 of which being identifiable to species level and new to science and five new genera. The new otolith-based genera are: Nishiberyx n. gen. (Berycidae), Sagaberyx n. gen. (Berycoidei family indet.), Namicauda n. gen. (Polymixiidae), Ortugobius n. gen. (tentatively placed in Gobiidae) and Cornusolea n. gen. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this second paper dedicated to report on deep-sea fishes from Brazilian waters, mainly from Bahia, the presence of one family and three species of Aulopoidei is reported for the first time from Brazilian waters: the aulopid Aulopus filamentosus (royal flagfin), the synodontids Saurida normani and Synodus poeyi (shortjaw lizardfish and offshore lizardfish, respectively). The presence of Synodus saurus and Saurida suspicio in Brazilian waters is discussed, and a key to the Western Atlantic Aulopoidei is provided. At the same time, declines in sardine and anchovy biomass have been observed in the NW Mediterra nean Sea, necessitating an assessment of whether the expansion of round sardinella may affect sardine and anchovy populations. Here, we combined stomach content and isotopic analyses to describe the trophic habits of round sardinella in the NW Mediterranean Sea and its trophic relationships with 2 sympatric small pelagic fish, European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and European pilchard Sardina pilchardus . Results revealed changes in the diet of round sardinella during the year. In summer, the most important prey were copepods ( Acartia spp.) and cladocerans ( Penilia avirostris ). During winter, the diet was composed mainly of copepods and tunicates (mainly appen- dicularians), but microplankton was also numerically important in adult diets. In contrast to previ- ous studies, during spring, round sardinella principally fed on salps (Thaliacea). To our knowledge, this is the first time that salps have been identified as an important prey for round sardinella. -

One of the new materials being tested is metal nanoparticles, which have unique chemical and physical characteristics owing to their extremely small size and high surface area to volume ratio. We examined the effectiveness of gold nanoparticles against the microsporidian parasite Heterosporis saurida, which causes severe economic losses in lizard fish, Saurida undosquamis aquaculture. Results: We synthesized gold nanoparticles by chemical reduction of tetrachloroauric acid as a metal precursor. We assessed the antimicrosporidial efficacy of the nanoparticles against H. saurida using an in vitro screening approach, which we had developed previously using the eel kidney cell line EK-1. The number of H. saurida spores produced in EK-1 cells was reduced in a proportional manner to the dosage of gold nanoparticles administered. A cell metabolic activity test (MTT) indicated that the gold nanoparticles did not appear to be toxic to the host cells. Conclusions: Gold nanoparticles can act as an effective antimicrosporidial agent and hold promise to reduce disease in lizardfish aquaculture. Metal nanoparticles should be considered as an alternate choice for development of new antimicrosporidial drugs to combat disease problems in aquaculture. 23. Fish stocks and fish landings Key message Fishing dynamics has been influenced by two main factors: fish stock and fishing quota. Most of the commercial fish stock is in safe biological limits. Cod is permanently overfished. Tunas represent about 15 to 20% of this value. Annual landings by major group of species have varied little for several years. Prices for most of fish species follow the general trend. Photo: Evalds Urtans Why monitor fish stock and fish landings? Fish is a natural resource – essential aspect not only for aquatic ecosystems, but also an important resource for fishing industry. Fishing has direct impact on aquatic ecosystems by removal of organisms from the environment, which is the sum of fish stock landed and discarded (returned). Fisheries can be 'directed' at single species but, more commonly, a variety of species are caught. In addition to target species, a particular fishery may often take a by-catch of other species, some of which may be landed. Costal fisheries are especially affected by decreasing fish stock as they are not flexible to adapt and change. However, in many costal areas fishing is still important source of income. By measuring changes in fish stock it is possible to identify human pressure on aquatic environment and plan fishing intensity. The impact of fishing must be assessed against the state of the stock and its ability to recover. Stocks are ‘overfished’ or outside safe biological limits (SBL) when the fishing pressure (mortality), exceeds recruitment and growth. The number of stocks within SBL is expressed as a proportion of the total number of commercial stocks for which status has been assessed. -
