Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Kjos Music Company • Publisher 2 The Composer Internationally known composer and conductor, Kirt Mosier was director of orchestras at Lee’s Summit West High School in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. He has also taught orchestration and arranging as an adjunct professor at University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music in Kansas City, Missouri. Mr. Mosier has many published orchestral works and has twice won national composition awards. His first occurred in 1993 with his original work, Baltic Dance, which won the National School Orchestra Association Composition Contest. In 2004, American Reel, won the 2004 Merle J. Reviewed by: David Montgomery, York University Libraries1 The story arc of any rock memoir is predictable. It begins or ends with substance abuse, there are troubled family relationships, extra-marital affairs, betrayals, friends left behind, “musical differences,” management conflicts, and of course, as in any bildungsroman the vicissitude of fortune. The guitar slinger turned raconteur is duty-bound to caution that even modest fame comes at a price, that “rock and roll is a vicious game.” Like the music, the memoir embraces the cliché. On his third go at rehab, April Wine frontman Myles Goodwyn reflects, “Things come in threes” (341). Goodwyn tells us that the goal of his unvarnished memoir was to set the record straight, and not to settle old scores. Neither as beloved as Rush, nor as emblematic as The Tragically Hip, April Wine was nonetheless quintessentially Canadian. With roots in the Maritimes and Quebec, the band regularly toured Ontario rock circuits in the early 1970s, expanding its range to the rest of Canada by the end of the decade. It peaked in the early 1980s, with modest success in England and the US, and garnered worldwide sales of 20 million albums—a solid career. Yet, despite winning several Juno awards and in 2010 being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, April Wine may also be a candidate for a quick fade. While songs such as “Weeping Widow,” “Oowatanite,” and “Roller” may resonate with the home demographic, future induction into Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is unlikely.

    CHUCK HANSEN Founder & Chairman of Electro Scan Inc. Chuck Hansen has a pretty cool life outside of trenchless technology. He has played his saxophone on stage with the likes of Tower of Power, Huey Lewis, Todd Rundgren, to name a few. His passion for rock n’ roll music runs deep — rooted in his childhood and in full bloom as an adult. He plays live music with rock stars, as well as owns a recording studio, where he records his own music (he’s recorded 24 CDs) in addition to other artists. Hansen is known in trenchless circles as the founder and chairman of Electro Scan Inc. (2011) and was founder of Hansen Information Technologies (1983), which developed asset management systems for water and sewer agencies. Electro Scan is an alternative to CCTV cameras to certify a trenchless lining and rehab projects as “leak-free.” He’s been playing music for more than 50 years, first learning the clarinet from his brother in the second grade then switching to the big baritone sax in the eighth grade. By high school, he was tabbed to play in the famous Monterey Jazz Festival’s All-Star Band competition, allowing him to take the stage with the likes of Dizzy Gilliespe, Louis Belson and Clark Terry. He went on to play in the U.C. Berkeley Jazz Band. Today, Hansen plays, in addition to the baritone sax, the bass sax and the contrabass sax. His “real world” job sometimes inhibits when he can play but he says he does each with as much passion and gusto as he can; each requires such enthusiasm and commitment to be successful, he says.
