  • A Memoir. by Myles Goodwyn. Toronto, Ontario: Harper Collins, 2016
Just Between You and Me: A Memoir. By Myles Goodwyn. Toronto, Ontario: Harper Collins, 2016. 379 pp. ISBN 978-1- 44344-670-9. Reviewed by: David Montgomery, York University Libraries1 The story arc of any rock memoir is predictable. It begins or ends with substance abuse, there are troubled family relationships, extra-marital affairs, betrayals, friends left behind, “musical differences,” management conflicts, and of course, as in any bildungsroman the vicissitude of fortune. The guitar slinger turned raconteur is duty-bound to caution that even modest fame comes at a price, that “rock and roll is a vicious game.” Like the music, the memoir embraces the cliché. On his third go at rehab, April Wine frontman Myles Goodwyn reflects, “Things come in threes” (341). Goodwyn tells us that the goal of his unvarnished memoir was to set the record straight, and not to settle old scores. Neither as beloved as Rush, nor as emblematic as The Tragically Hip, April Wine was nonetheless quintessentially Canadian. With roots in the Maritimes and Quebec, the band regularly toured Ontario rock circuits in the early 1970s, expanding its range to the rest of Canada by the end of the decade. It peaked in the early 1980s, with modest success in England and the US, and garnered worldwide sales of 20 million albums—a solid career. Yet, despite winning several Juno awards and in 2010 being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, April Wine may also be a candidate for a quick fade. While songs such as “Weeping Widow,” “Oowatanite,” and “Roller” may resonate with the home demographic, future induction into Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is unlikely.

  • Blueink Newsletter November 2016
B B L L U U E S I D N K November 2016 Duke Robillard-‘Blues Full Circle’ Duke Robillard surely must be one of the very most prolific blues artists found anywhere. Everywhere I turn he has a new release out whether a solo venture or one of his many collaborations with the likes of Eric Bibb. With the release of ‘Blues Full Circle’ he does not disappoint with a thoroughly enjoyable CD. The very first cut sets the tone with ‘Lay a Little Lovin’ On Me’ which really supports Duke’s voicing. Following that is a nice bit of lazy shuffling in ‘Rain Keeps Falling’. ‘Fool About My Money’ changes things up and gets in a little Louisiana Zydeco. Duke Robillard returns completely to his roots of blues with this all star line-up of Duke Robillard on guitars and vocals, Bruce Bears on Piano and Hammond, Brad Hallen on bass and Mark Teixeira on drums, and if that isn't enough Duke adds musical dynamite with guest shots by Jimmie Vaughan, Sugar Ray Norcia and Kelley Hunt. It's what you expect from Duke Robillard all 13 songs and 52 minutes of it. ’Blues Full Circle’ seems to have it all and is completely an enjoyable listen. Colin James-Blue Highways Blues singer/guitarist Colin is one of several excellent Canadian blues artists, this is his 18th. album release and he has been playing the blues since he was a teenager in the 1980s. And it quite frankly it shows, this album sees him saluting his blues heroes, from Freddie King to Howlin' Wolf, from Robert Johnson to British blues guitarist Peter Green, with Colin and the band effortlessly going through a number of styles and sounds paying tribute to these artists but putting their own spin on things rather than doing straight copies.

  • Getting to the Heart of Cultural Safety in Unama'ki
Getting to the Heart of Cultural Safety in Unama’ki: Considering kesultulinej (Love) De-Ann Sheppard Cape Breton University Cite as: Sheppard, D. M. (2020). Getting to the Heart of Cultural Safety in Unama’ki: Considering kesultulinej (Love). Witness: The Canadian Journal of Critical Nursing Discourse, Vol 2 (1), 51-65 https://doi.org/ 10.25071/2291-5796.57 Abstract Reflecting upon my early knowledge landscapes, situated within the unceded Mi’kmaq territory of Unama’ki (Cape Breton, Nova Scotia), living the Peace & Friendship Treaty and the teachings of Mi’kmaw Elders, I contemplate the essential relationship with land and language, specifically, kesultulinej (love as action) and etuaptmumk (two-eyed seeing) to Cultural Safety. I recognize my position, privilege, and Responsibility in teaching and learning about the contextual meanings of Cultural Safety, situated in specific Indigenous terrains and in relation with the land, across time, and relationships. Critical reflection on my story and experiences challenge me to consider why and how Maori nursing theorizations of Cultural Safety have been indoctrinated into the language of national nursing education by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN), Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and most provincial nursing regulatory bodies; this is increasingly relevant as nursing education is progressively shaped by neoliberal and Indigenizing agendas. As I contemplate wrapping Cultural Safety with kesultulinej, I see the potential to decolonize nursing. Mi’kmaw teachings of etuaptmumk and kesultulinej call forth Responsibilities to act, and in doing so move us into a space of potential to resist the colonizing forces within nursing. In this moment I realize the interconnected meaning of being amidst these relationships that matter to me as a person and as a nurse; relationships that are marked by love, care and compassion.

One of rock’s most popular and successful artists, the multiplatinum- selling singer-songwriter is also one of rock’s best live performers. Now a Japanese television concert special from his latest world tour comes to America in a DVD+CD set Live At The Budokan (A&M/UME), released June 17, 2003, featuring a bonus CD, Adams’ first plugged-in live album since 1989. Filmed during a 2000 performance at the Budokan in Tokyo, the nearly two-hour-long DVD features 26 songs, including four bonus tracks which were not originally broadcast in Japan: “Fits Ya Good,” “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” “Before The Night Is Over” and “Still Beautiful To Me.” Shot in the High-Definition format and digitally transferred to provide the best possible picture resolution, the DVD includes both a 5.1 Surround and a stereo mix. (A DVD-only edition of Live At The Budokan will be issued July 15, 2003.) Among the concert highlights are energetic renditions of many of his biggest hits, from the #1 smashes “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” (the Oscar- and Grammy-winner from Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves), “Heaven” and “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?” to the Top 10s “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started,” “Run To You,” “Summer Of ‘69” and “Please Forgive Me,” and Top 40 charters “It’s Only Love” and “Cuts Like A Knife.” Other fan favorites include “18 Til I Die,” “I’m Ready,” “The Best Of Me,” “Back To You,” “Into The Fire” and the blues jam “If Ya Wanna Be Bad Ya Gotta Be Good/Let’s Make A Night To Remember.” 2 “When You’re Gone” and “Cloud Number 9” were first heard on Adams’ most recent album, 1998’s On A Day Like Today, as were “How Do Ya Feel Tonight,” “Before The Night Is Over,” “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” and “Getaway.” The latter quartet were among eight songs in this concert set not performed for 2001’s concert DVD Live At Slane Castle.
