  • "WEIRD AL" YANKOVIC: POLKAS, PARODIES and the POWER of SATIRE by Chuck Miller Originally Published in Goldmine #514
"WEIRD AL" YANKOVIC: POLKAS, PARODIES AND THE POWER OF SATIRE By Chuck Miller Originally published in Goldmine #514 Al Yankovic strapped on his accordion, ready to perform. All he had to do was impress some talent directors, and he would be on The Gong Show, on stage with Chuck Barris and the Unknown Comic and Jaye P. Morgan and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine. "I was in college," said Yankovic, "and a friend and I drove down to LA for the day, and auditioned for The Gong Show. And we did a song called 'Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung.' And the audience seemed to enjoy it, but we never got called back. So we didn't make the cut for The Gong Show." But while the Unknown Co mic and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine are currently brain stumpers in 1970's trivia contests, the accordionist who failed the Gong Show taping became the biggest selling parodist and comedic recording artist of the past 30 years. His earliest parodies were recorded with an accordion in a men's room, but today, he and his band have replicated tracks so well one would think they borrowed the original master tape, wiped off the original vocalist, and superimposed Yankovic into the mix. And with MTV, MuchMusic, Dr. Demento and Radio Disney playing his songs right out of the box, Yankovic has reached a pinnacle of success and longevity most artists can only imagine. Alfred Yankovic was born in Lynwood, California on October 23, 1959. Seven years later, his parents bought him an accordion for his birthday.

  • Shakin' All Over: Canadian Pop Music in the 1960S
Shakin’ All Over: Canadian Pop Music in the 1960s. Written by Nicholas Jennings and directed by Gary McGroarty.1 video disc (90 min.): col., some b&w. Kelowna, BC: Filmwest Associates [http://indigo.filmwest.com], [2007?]. $195.00 Originally aired on CBC in January 2006, this film traces Canadian popular music, at least the kind rooted in rhythm and blues, rockabilly and folk, from the early sixties to the establishment of the Canadian Content rules for radio and television in 1971. The film consists of clips from close to sixty songs, dozens of interviews, and archival footage going all the way back to Ian and Sylvia Tyson discussing that epiphanous moment when they heard Dylan perform “Blowin’ in the Wind” in Greenwich Village to Crowbar playing “Oh What a Feeling” in the early 1970s at the “dawn of Cancon.” The Tysons realized they could also write their own tunes rather than exclusively performing traditional material. Hearing and seeing the duo perform their “Four Strong Winds” in a clip from about 1964, one realizes, though, just how proper the Canadians sounded in comparison to Dylan, with his scruffy and idiosyncratic whine. They may have taken their cue from him, but their musical manners were clearly of a different nature, suggesting a direction rooted more in the traditions of the British Isles than American folk. Ironically, when the Yorkville and Yonge Street music scenes begin to develop and there was talk of a Toronto sound in 1966, it was the music of Ronnie Hawkins, a transplanted American with a southern drawl who, at least according to the film, personified that sound.

  • Condol Healy
CONDOLENCE MOTION Moved by: Councillor Grimes Seconded by: Deputy Mayor Pantalone The Mayor and Members of Toronto City Council are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Legendary Blues Guitarist Jeff Healey on March 2, 2008. Born in Toronto and raised in the City’s west end, Jeff Healey was a self-taught child prodigy of the guitar by age 4. Blinded by the age of 1 from a rare form of cancer, Jeff Healey overcame his disability and lived as an example that anything is possible. He soon became an internationally recognized music star playing with music greats Stevie Ray Vaughan, George Harrison, Eric Clapton and B. B. King and was known for his unique form of playing the guitar laid across his lap. His musical talents were expressed primarily through the blues-rock music he created, but his passion was jazz. He could be heard on his CBC radio program My Kinda Jazz, or in concert with Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards, personifying the art form he loved so dearly. Jeff Healey’s debut album See the Light, received a Grammy nomination and a Juno award and sold over 1 million copies. The true talent of Jeff Healey and his musical genius will continue to live on through those he touched and his greatness will always be remembered. The City Clerk is requested to convey, on behalf of the Members of Toronto City Council, our sincere sympathy to his wife, Christie, daughter, Rachel, and son Derek, his father and stepmother, Bud and Rose, and his sisters, Laura and Linda.
