4 H.G. KURIAKOSE MAR GREGORIOS METROPOLITAN, PAMPADY

Kuriakose Mar Gregorios, the late lamented Metropolitan of the Kottayam Diocese. The saintly bishop, familiarly known as ‘Pampady Thirumeni’ who passed away fifty years ago is an inspiring memory in this land. His prayers have brought showers of blessings upon everyone.

As the sixth son of pezhamattomChackochen and Illayachi of Pampady, born on the 5th of April, 1885, (His demise was also on April 5), Pampady Thirumeni was the very essence of simplicity. The boy Kuriakose was the favourite of his Guru ‘Madathilasan’ who had great hopes about him. His greatinterest in prayer and attending church service marked him out for a pious life. He learned the Scriptures and Syriac under the disciplined tutorship of VattaserrilGeevargheseMalpan in Old Seminary, Kottayam . After the study of theology at M.D Seminary, he came back to Pampady. He had became a reputed SyriacPandit by this time.He received his deaconship on 5 February 1899.

People living in and around Pampady remember with awe and nostalgia how Deacon Kuriakose fasted and prayed for 3 days leading a group of people in Pampady Church for the blessing of rain to the drought ridden Pampady. After 3 days, food was served to the people who had attended the prayer. Suddenly it began to rain. It was as if the heavens had opened and blessed Pampady. After this incident, Deacon Kuriakose was looked up to with reverence by the people and they approached him with their troubles. Deacon Kuriakose received his priesthood on 28 July 1906 and the next day made Ramban by Kadavil Paulose Mar Athanasios.

On 16 February 1929, he was consecrated the Metropolitan of Kottayam diocese with the title ‘Kuriakose Mar Gregorios’. Bishop Kuriakose Mar Gregorios was affectionately called ‘Pampady Thirumeni’. As Metropolitan of Kottayam diocese, he held its administrative responsibilities for thirty five years in Pampady Dayara. Thirumeni’s prayers performed various miracles. He went to the plague- affected Kunnamkulam and not a single person died of this deadly disease after he stepped on the outskirts of the town. The wonders performed by this great Sanyasi showed the world that ‘more things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.

Thirumeni was depressed due to the problems in the church and felt the grave need for a proper place to pray. Madathilasan, sensing the need of his former student, gave him 12 acres of land on Pothenpuram hill at nominal price. There, Thirumeni

5 set up his abode and devoted his life to prayers and charity. On this elevated place between heaven and earth, prayed this great Mystic and his prayers still continue in the Almighty’s serene presence. Pampady lost a great lover of mankind when Thirumeni’s soul departed from his transient body on the 5th of April, 1965 and reached its Creator.

Thirumeni’s pocket watch also stopped exactly at 02:35 hrs at the time of his last breath and the same is still displayed at “Pothenpuram Dayara” of Pampady, Kottayam Dist along with the other belongings of Thirumeni. Although Thirumeni is still not declared as a Saint formally by the church, as experienced by many of us, he is a Saint in the true sense. There is testimony and as experienced by many, all the faithful’s calls/prayers are answered by Thirumeni promptly, the same way he was taking care of the needy (irrespective caste, creed, religion etc.) during his life time.

Mar Gregorios Abdul Jaleel Bava (Heavenly Abode 27 April 1681) was a Syriac Orthodox bishop of Jerusalem from 1664 until his death. He is chiefly remembered for his 1665 mission to India, in which he established ties between the newly independent and the Syriac Orthodox church. He is venerated as a saint by his church.

Abdul Jaleel was born in Mosul, Iraq. In 1654 he was ordained metropolitan bishop for the Ameed (Diyarbaker) diocese in Turkey by the Patriarch Mor Ignatius She’mun. In 1664, he was elevated as the Metropolitan of Jerusalem with the title Mor Gregorios. He traveled to India in 1665 to regularize the ordination of Mar Thoma I,archdeacon of the Saint Thomas Christian community who been declared a bishop by his followers after refusing to submit to the Portuguese. In India Gregorios established ties between Thoma’s Malankara Church and the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch, and introduced the West Syrian Rite (later known as the Malankara Rite in India). He Heavenly Abode in India in 1681, and his remains are interred in the St. Thomas Church at North Paravur. On April 4, 2000, PatriarchIgnatius Zakka I declared Mor Gregorios Abdul Jaleel a saint.

Mar Thoma II was the second Metropolitan of the Malankara Church from 1670 to 1686. During his period a number of bishops from Syria came to . Due to persecutions and the dangerous routes none of them could return.

The leaders of the Malankara Church selected a nephew (brother’s son) of Mar Thoma I as his successor. He was consecrated by Mar Thoma I and the Antiochean patriarchal delegate Mar Gregorios Abdul Jaleel who was the archbishop of Jerusalem. He was the second Mar Thoma who ascended the throne of Malankara church. When Mar Thoma I Heavenly Abode on 25 April 1670 Mar Thoma II, took charge of the Malankara Church.

6 Mar Dionysius I, also known as Mar Thoma VI (Heavenly Abode 8 April 1808), was the Metropolitan of the Malankara Church from 1765 until his death. A member of the Pakalomattom family, he was a shrewd administrator who appealed to outside authorities to assert his position as the sole leader of the Malankara Church and to attempt to reunite all the .

Mar Thoma VI succeeded Mar Thoma V as in 1765, and unlike his predecessors, who were claimed by their opponents not to have been properly ordained as bishop, he received orders from Syriac Orthodox bishops in 1772, thus ending any controversy. Other events of his reign include the separation of the Thozhiyoor church (now the Malabar Independent Syrian Church), the arrival of English Protestant missionaries, and the first translation of the Bible from Syriac to Malayam.

Mar Thoma VIII was the Metropolitan of the Malankara church in Kerala, India from 1809 to 1816. He was a man of vision. It was during his time Malankara church opened the first formal educational institution, in Kerala. With the opening of Kottayam Suryani Seminary, modern education dawned in Kerala.

While Mar Thoma VII was at Kandanad (near Kochi) he fell seriously ill. He did not get time to call a meeting of the church leaders to select his successor. So he invited one of his relatives Thoma Kathanar, to his bed side, laid his hands on him, prayed and consecrated him as Mar Thoma VIII on 2 July 1809. Two days later, on 4 July, Mar Thoma VII Heavenly Abode and Mar Thoma VIII took charge of the Malankara church.

Geevarghese Mar Ivanios was born on November 14, 1940, at the Keeyath family, Othara, Tiruvalla, as the son of George and Annamma. After his schooling, he did his BSc from Fathima Matha College, Kollam. Further to that he took his post-graduation in Hebrew and Syriac from Mansfield College, England. He also took a Masters in Theology from Oxford University. Meanwhile, he learnt Sanskrit and Latin.

He was ordained a deacon in 1963 and a priest in 1973 by Mathews Mar Kurilos. There upon, he worked as the vicar of Karappuzha Chapel. In 1979, Marthoma Mathews I ordained him to the rank of a Ramban. Geevarghese Ramban was elected a bishop on December 28, 1982, convened at MGM High School Tiruvalla. He was later consecrated as Mar Ivanios Episcopa on May 15, 1985, at St Mary’s Orthodox Church, Puthiyakavu, Mavelikkara. Since then, he was serving the Kottayam Diocese as Bishop. He was elevated a metropolitan in 1991.

From 1971 onwards, he had been teaching at the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam, and has authored books, ‘Hridaya Sudhikaranam,’ ‘Nirlepam,’ and ‘Mounathinte Lavanyam.’
