The blessing of the trays, the street decorations, the quilts in the windows and the throwing of flowers over the procession of the trays carried by hundreds of young girls on their heads, is an unforgettable sight. The Procession of the Tabuleiros, heralded by pipers and fireworks, is led by the Banner of the Holy Ghost and the three Crowns of the Emperors and Kings. They are followed by the Banners and Crowns from all the parishes, and the girls carrying the trays. In the rear are the cartloads of bread, meat and wine, pulled by the symbolic sacrificial oxen, with golden horns and sashes. The girls who carry the trays have to wear long white dresses with a coloured sash across the chest. -

Rap. This paper aims to raise a reflection about the growth of Batalha dos MC´s in the city of Sao Paolo, starting from the premise that such cultural events are configured as a recent urban phenomenon in the history of the Brazilian Hip Hop movement, but bringing the discussion to the context of the city. -

Urban Social Movements and Their Struggles Towards the ‘Right to the City’. Protest and Creativity as Determinant Features of Democratic Cities in Germany and Brazil. -

Contemporary Dance, Seas of Sodadi and Corporeal Creolization
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Dancing at the Crossroads with Raiz di Polon: Contemporary Dance, Seas of Sodadi and Corporeal Creolization. A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture & Performance by Šara Stranovsky 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Dancing at the Crossroads with Raiz di Polon: Contemporary Dance, Seas of Sodadi and Corporeal Creolization. by Šara Stranovsky Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor, Allen F. Roberts, Chair Cape Verde is located at the geographical and cultural crossroads between West Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The archipelago’s location physically isolates the islands, while a lack of financial opportunities encourages Cape Verdeans to emigrate to study or work. Cape Verde is a point of union for many nations around the world and many Cape Verdeans identify with being both European and African. The islands are divided culturally and linguistically while united as part of the Cape Verdean Kriolu mosaic. Opposition between isolation and union has developed divisions regarding which languages and traditions will be privileged as markers of national identity. These tensions create the context for the archipelago’s first contemporary dance company, Raiz di Polon. I show how director Mano Preto has innovated a style that blurs boundaries using techniques rooted in the archipelago's folk practices and informed by intercultural collaboration. Through conducting participatory ethnographic research, accessing archives, collaborating on performances and documentating the company’s work, I clarify both the strengths and the constraints of migratory flows, globalization, and the financial need for a ii global audience. -

Bainbridge records wistful, lo-fi dance disastrous, festival performance music under the name Kindness , but this isn’t a music video. It begins with him, long-haired and serious-faced, delivering a monologue about pop music. Then the camera jumps out to reveal him seated at a keyboard next to a cute kid in a strip y top. Sampling Hip Hop and Making ‘Nóiz’: Transcultural Flows, Citizenship, and Identity in the Contestatory Space of Brazilian Hip Hop Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By David James McLaughlin, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Abril Trigo, Advisor Ana del Sarto Laura Podalsky Copyright by David James McLaughlin 2015 Abstract The dissertation examines how marginalized Brazilians use hip hop culture as a space in which to build community, demand citizenship and its associated benefits, and contest social, economic, racial, and national exclusion. Special emphasis is placed on how the Brazilian hip hop community uses rap music and visual culture and negotiates urban and digital space to achieve these goals and build connections to similar populations around the globe, taking advantage of increased connectivity through globalization. I also locate Brazilian hip hop in both Brazilian and Latin American musical, historical, and political contexts through a comparative theoretical framework that examines transculturation, antropofagia (cultural cannibalism), mestizaje, and sampling. Ultimately, with hip hop culture and rap music as spaces of contestation, I argue that hip hoppers connect globally to challenge traditional notions of nation and citizenship in an effort to access rights, increase visibility, and build community. ii Dedication To Sarah, who came with me and nearly died for this.
