HODGSON2 1Plant protection Dept., Agricultural College, Razi University, Kermanshah, Iran 2Department of Biodiversity and Biological Systematics, the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, UK ABSTRACT The Coccoidea on cultivated and non-cultivated vegetation in Kermanshah, western Iran, were investigated between 2007 and 2009. More than 63 samples from cultivated and non-cultivated plants were collected. The identified species mainly belonged to the following families: Diaspi- didae (12 species), Coccidae (7), Pseudococcidae (4), Margarodidae (3), Eriococcidae (2) and Ortheziidae (1). The economically important species are discussed. This project is part of an MSc on Coccoidea studies which has still some time to run and so we expect that more species will be found in future. The neococcoids form a mono- phyletic group supported by both morphological and genetic data. In contrast, the monophyly of the archaeococcoids is uncertain and the higher level ranks within it have been controversial, particularly since the late Professor Jan Koteja introduced his multi-family classification for scale insects in 1974. Recent phylogenetic studies using molecular and morphological data support the recognition of up to 15 extant families of archaeococcoids, including 11 families for the former Margarodidae sensu lato, vindicating Koteja’s views. Archaeococcoids are represented better in the fossil record than neococcoids, and have an adequate record through the Tertiary and Cretaceous but almost no putative coccoid fos- sils are known from earlier.

Italy The armored scales (Family Diaspididae) constitute one of the most successful groups of plant-parasitic arthropods and include some of the most damaging and refractory pests of perennial crops and ornamentals. The Diaspididae is the largest and most specialized of the dozen or so currently recognized families which compose the superfamily Coccoidea. A recent world catalog (19) lists 338 valid genera and approximately 1700 species of armored scales. Although the diaspidids have been more intensively studied than any other group of coccids, probably no more than half of the existing forms have been recognized and named. Armored scales occur virtually everywhere perennial vascular plants are found, although a few of the most isolated oceanic islands (e.g. the Hawaiian group) apparently have no endemic representatives and are populated entirely by recent adventives. In general. the greatest numbers and diversity of genera and species occur in the tropics. subtropics. and warmer portions of the temperate zones. With the exclusion of the so-called palm scales (Phoenicococcus. Scale crawlers produced by females collected in southern France and Spain lived for less than two d in the absence of a host. On A. donax shoots held under a diurnally variable temperature regime (15Ð26ЊC), crawlers settled on leaf collars and axillary stem bases and completed the Þrst instar within 14 d. Winged adult males emerged within six wk and lived 1.7 d in vials. Immobile adult females were observed 75 d after crawler release. Development time to adult was reduced 15% in males and 28% in females when scales were reared at a constant temperature of 26ЊC. Survival from crawler to adult was 20Ð25%. The generation time for laboratory- reared females was 170 d and their average life span was 203 d. Females from Þeld collections produced an average of 85 live crawlers, 2.7-fold more than did colony-reared females. Across 31 Þeld collections, female size was correlated to the percentage of scales that were reproductive. However, among eight collections from two Spanish sites, size varied but was not correlated to reproductive success.

Accepted 21 May, 2012 Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) are serious pests of ornamental plants, and are becoming increasingly important in urban areas in Iran. Here, we report on the results of an initial survey of scale insects found on ornamental plants in Kermanshah City, Iran. A total of 15 species of scale insects were recorded: 7 Diaspididae, 3 Pseudococcidae, 3 Coccidae, and 2 Eriococcidae. Of these, three species, Diaspidiotus gigas (Thiem and Gernek), Chortinaspis subterranean (Lindinger) and Acanthacoccus insignis (Newstead) are new records for Iran. In addition, five other species are new to Kermanshah. Key words: Coccoidea, ornamental plants, Kermanshah, new records.
