STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (Include Personages, Dates, fivenfs, Etc.) In 1843 Moses Greenl4af discovered iron ore on what we know as Ore Mtn. (Sebec Island 1940 15' series). The surface limonite was smelted into 40-150 Ib. ingots or pigs.

In 1845, The Katahdin Iron Works was incorporated, and for about a half century "K.I." operated (1890) except for 8 years (1858-73). Up to 2000 tons (peak 2350) of raw iron were produced.

From 1873-1890, 200 workers were employed and K.I. had 2 large boarding houses, Town Hall, school, post office, company store, photo saloon and two farms producing hay for the horses.

10,000 cords of wood were annually consumed to make charcoal for the furnace. After 1882, 4000 more cords were needed to fire The Black Maria which brought rail transportation to the community, from Bangor. The integrity of The Iron Works is vouched for in that their script was accepted as legal tender as far as Bangor.

With the increased cost of obtaining 10,000 cords of wood every year, and the opening of The Mesabi Range ore fields, K.I. had to let its fires go out. Brockway, Marjorie - Katahdin Iron Works, Down East Magazine* Camden, Me. Oct. 1961, PP. 20-25.
