Luftwaffe Eagle Johannes Steinhoff Flying with skill and daring, the great ace survived the war and a horrible accident, living into his 80s. This article was written by Colin D. Heaton originally published in World War II Magazine in February 2000. Colin D. Heaton is currently working on a biography of Johannes Steinhoff with the help of the great ace's family. Johannes Steinhoff was truly one of the most charmed fighter pilots in the Luftwaffe. His exploits became legendary though his wartime career ended tragically. Steinhoff served in combat from the first days of the war through April 1945. He flew more than 900 missions and engaged in aerial combat in over 200 sorties, operating from the Western and Eastern fronts, as well as in the Mediterranean theater. Victor over 176 opponents, Steinhoff was himself shot down a dozen times and wounded once. Yet he always emerged from his crippled and destroyed aircraft in high spirits. He opted to ride his aircraft down on nearly every occasion, never trusting parachutes. Steinhoff lived through lengthy exposure to combat, loss of friends and comrades, the reversal of fortune as the tide turned against Germany, and political dramas that would have broken the strongest of men. Pilots such as Steinhoff, Hannes Trautloft, Adolf Galland and many others fought not only Allied aviators but also their own corrupt leadership, which was willing to sacrifice Germany's best and bravest to further personal and political agendas. In both arenas, they fought a war of survival. Aces like Steinhoff risked death every day to defend their nation and, by voicing their opposition to the unbelievable decisions of the Third Reich high command, risked their careers and even their lives. -

Jim Greenhill National Guard Bureau MOUNT AVALA, Serbia - Honoring Serbian contributions in two world wars, Air Force Gen. Craig McKinley, the chief of the National Guard Bureau, placed a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Hero here Sept. 11. "It was especially poignant today, on the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, when our nation was attacked, that I symbolically thanked the Serbian military for their support to the United States in World War I and World War II," McKinley said. McKinley is visiting Serbia with a delegation of Ohio National Guard members and observing National Guard State Partnership Program activities. Serbia is Ohio's SPP partner. "This is something which is very important to us," said Dragan Sutanovac, the Serbian Minister of Defense. "This is a message to the [Serbian] military. We appreciate it very much. This is something which, symbolically, means a lot." Sutanovac was the first Serbian defense minister to visit the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia in February. Though estimates vary, Serbian casualties in World War I may have been as high as 1.2 million, the majority of whom were civilians. The war decimated the country, killing more than 25 percent of its people and more than half its males, said Serbian and other sources. F-82 Twin Mustang P-82/F-82 Twin Mustang XP-82 prototype Type Heavy fighter Manufacturer North American Aviation Designed by Edgar Schmued Maiden flight 6 July 1945 Introduced 1946 Retired 1953 Primary user United States Air Force Number built 270 Unit cost US$215,154[1] Developed from P-51 Mustang The North American F-82 Twin Mustang was the last American piston engine fighter ordered into production by the United States Air Force. Based on the P-51 Mustang, the F-82 was originally designed as a long-range escort fighter in World War II, its postwar role changed to that of night- fighting. Radar-equipped F-82s were used quite extensively by the Air Defense Command as replacements for the P-61 Black Widow night fighter. During the Korean War, Japan-based F-82s were among the first USAF aircraft to operate over Korea. The first three North Korean airplanes destroyed by US forces were shot down by F-82s. Design and development Initially intended as a long-range escort fighter, the F-82 was designed to escort B-29 bombers on long missions over Japan during a planned U.S. invasion of the Japanese home islands that never materialized. It consisted of a two fuselage design, somewhat similar to the experimental German Messerschmitt Bf 109Z "Zwilling". Although based on the P-51H Mustang, it was actually an entirely 1 new design incorporating two lengthened P-51H Mustang fuselages mounted to a newly-designed center wing, tail and propellers, as well as having a unique four wheel landing gear. -

HISTORY OF THE 20th FIGHTER GROUP Early History of the 20th Fighter Group’s Squadrons WW I It was August 1917. It had been only fourteen years since the first powered flight and ten years since the Aeronautical Division of the U.S. Army Signal Corps had been formed. Air power was in its infancy and growing. The possibilities were endless. New innovations were occurring everywhere you looked but the Great War raged in Europe and the U.S. was gearing up for its part in that war. Three squadrons familiar to us all were formed at Kelly Field, Texas - the 55th, 77th and 79th Aero Squadrons. It is believed the first 78th Aero Squadron was also formed there. Only the 55th’s history would survive this initial formation to connect with the current squadrons. The Air Service hadn’t yet figured out what it would look like, so there were many fits and starts as the service grew. By September the three squadrons had their designations changed to Aero Construction Squadrons. On Sept. 17, 1917 the 55th Aero Construction Squadron was on its way to N.Y. for deployment to France.
