We were at the end of the “sixties”, a remarkable decade of 20th century for popular music, revolutionary movements, technological achievements and radical changes in human relationships. It was also the time of “hippie liberation”, the spread of drugs through young people. Everything was fine when, just in the span of thirty days, three outstanding members of musical background suddenly died. 1970, September the 3th: Alan Wilson, “Canned Heat” guitar, harmonica and vocal, commit suicide at home of another member group, Bob Hite, in Topanga Canyon, California. An overdose was the cause of his death. On the night of the opening, Diane Hooker-Roan and Zakiya Hooker, daughters of the late bluesman, will appear at the GRAMMY Museum for a special program. Presented in conjunction with the John Lee Hooker Estate and Craft Recordings, the exhibit originally opened at GRAMMY Museum Mississippi—Hooker's home state—in 2017, the year of Hooker's centennial. On display for a limited time only through June 2018, the exhibit will include, among other items: • A rare 1961 Epiphone Zephyr—one of only 13 made that year—identical to the '61 Zephyr played by John Lee Hooker. Plus, a prototype of Epiphone's soon-to-be-released Limited Edition 100th Anniversary John Lee Hooker Zephyr signature guitar • Instruments such as the Gibson ES-335, Hohner HJ5 Jazz, and custom Washburn HB35, all of which were played by Hooker • The Best Traditional Blues Recording GRAMMY Hooker won, with Bonnie Raitt, for "I'm In The Mood" at the 32nd Annual GRAMMY Awards in 1990 • Hooker's Best Traditional Blues Album GRAMMY for Don't Look Back, which was co-produced by Van Morrison and Mike Kappus and won at the 40th Annual GRAMMY Awards in 1998 • A letter to Hooker from former President Bill Clinton • The program from Hooker's memorial service, which took place on June 27, 2001, in Oakland, Calif. -

We know that Guantanamo is still open, but do we really know what that means?’ The idea is to experience an emotional understanding, so it’s not just an intellectual abstraction. -Laura Poitras, filmmaker The structure, process and narrative units that make up most of the book rely on language in presenting facts and argument. In contrast, the emphasis in this unit is on forms of artistic expression. .Images and music are one component of the culture of surveillance that so infuses our minds and everyday life. The symbolic materials and meanings of culture are social fabrications (though not necessarily social deceptions). They speak to (and may be intended to create or manipulate) needs, aspirations, and fears. Culture communicates meaning and can express (as well as shape) the shared concerns of a given time period and place. Surveillance technology is not simply applied; it is also experienced by agents, subjects, and audiences who define, judge and have feelings about being watched or a watcher. Our ideas and feelings about surveillance are somewhat independent of the technology per se. As with the devil in Spanish literary tradition (image below) the artist can serve to take the lid off of what is hidden, revealing deeper meanings. As a group on the pop-rock landscape, it’s been said that The Who occupy a rebel ground somewhere between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, while, at the same time, proving to be innovative, iconoclastic and progressive all on their own. We can thank them for various now- standard rock affectations: the heightened level of decadence in rock (smashed guitars and exploding drum kits, among other now almost clichéd antics); making greater use of synthesizers in popular music; taking American R&B into a decidedly punk direction; and even formulating the idea of the once oxymoronic sounding “rock opera.” Almost all these elements are evident on The Who’s debut album, 1966’s “The Who Sings My Generation.” Though the band—back when they were known as The High Numbers—had a minor English hit in 1964 with the singles “I’m the Face”/”Zoot Suit,” it wouldn’t be until ’66 and the release of “My Generation” that the world got a true what’s what from The Who. “Generation,” steam- powered by its title tune and timeless lyric of “I hope I die before I get old,” “Generation” is a song cycle worthy of its inclusive name. Twelve tracks make up the album: “I Don’t Mind,” “The Good’s Gone,” “La-La-La Lies,” “Much Too Much,” “My Generation,” “The Kids Are Alright,” “Please, Please, Please,” “It’s Not True,” “The Ox,” “A Legal Matter” and “Instant Party.” Allmusic.com summarizes the album appropriately: An explosive debut, and the hardest mod pop recorded by anyone. -
