    Lewis Harcourt’s Journal of the 1914 War Crisis Edited and Introduced by John W. Young, University of Nottingham Lewis Harcourt (1863-1922), known as ‘Loulou’, was the son of the prominent Liberal politician, William Harcourt. The bond between them was particularly strong, possibly because Loulou’s mother died immediately after his birth, and after school at Eton he became secretary to his father, who held the positions of Home Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and, in 1896-98, Leader of the Opposition. Although frequently involved intrigue, notably when Sir William tried to succeed Gladstone as premier in 1894, Loulou did not enter Parliament until 1904. Cooler-tempered, subtler and less domineering than his father, if also less driven and passionate, he spent most of his career in government, becoming First Commissioner of Works in 1905, promoted to the Cabinet in 1907 and, the following year, taking up the more significant post of Colonial Secretary, which he held until 1915.1 Despite his privileged background – one of his great-grandfathers was an Archbishop of York, another the First Earl of Clarendon, a Cabinet minister under George III – he followed his father in aligning with radical causes like the introduction of death duties, scepticism about Imperial expansion, support for Irish Home Rule and opposition to the Boer War. But his was a traditional form of radicalism that made him sceptical about women’s suffrage and Lloyd George’s ‘People’s Budget’ of 1909.     1 The Molteno Family Italian Origins and English Roots Collected by P. A. Molteno and compiled by R.F.M. Immelman Introduction The following account of the early history of the Molteno family is, sadly, only a fragment. It is based on research done in the 1890s by Percy Molteno, Sir John Charles Molteno’s second son. But it was drafted only in the 1960s by Dr R.F.M. Immelman, former Chief Librarian at the University of Cape Town. How Dr Immelman came to be involved in writing up the story of our family, and why none of his work ever saw the light of day, is told in my Introduction to his draft biography of Sir John Charles Molteno. Several caveats about this brief draft history of the origins of our family must be made. First, Dr Immelman’s typed manuscript ends abruptly in mid-sentence. I don’t know whether or not substantially more exists; a further search of the University of Cape Town Archives is needed. Secondly, the typescript is only a draft. Dr Immelman has made many handwritten corrections and additions, which I have put on the version that appears below. But whether he wanted to make further corrections is not known. Thirdly, it would be valuable to do more research of archival sources in Milan, but of course this can only be done by an Italian-speaker. It might discover details of the Molteno family in Milan in the mid 18th century. More specifically, it might uncover whether the Molteno, Colnaghi, Torre and Bartolozzi families knew each other in Milan before they all landed up in London, and indeed why they emigrated.

He was the first Molteno to live most of his life in Africa and about whom a lot is known. In a separate piece below, I pay tribute to the author, Dr R. F. M. Immelman and explain how he came to write it. But here I want to tell you a little about John Charles Molteno himself. John Charles Molteno, aged 58, on his appointment as Prime Minister of the Cape in 1872 2 John Charles Molteno John Charles was born in Central London in 1814, the eldest of five children. As a child, his family apparently called him Charles, but once at the Cape, he was known as John Molteno. His father, also called John, was the second son of George Anthony Molteno, the first Molteno to come from Milan and settle in England. John was a public servant working as Deputy Keeper of Legacy Duty at Somerset House. He died prematurely – aged only 39 – in 1827 and, as he commented sadly when already very ill, was able to leave no significant assets in his will for his wife, Caroline (nee Bower), to survive on. Caroline’s father, George Bower, who was by this time a senior and highly paid official in the Bank of England, found a house where she and her children could live. This was in Rye Lane in the village of Peckham, on the outskirts of London, where he already had his own home.

    1/17/2019 Cecil Rhodes - Wikipedia Cecil Rhodes Cecil John Rhodes PC (5 July 1853 – 26 March 1902)[1] was a British The Right Honourable businessman, mining magnate and politician in southern Africa who served as Cecil Rhodes Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. An ardent believer in British imperialism, Rhodes and his British South Africa Company founded the southern African territory of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia), which the company named after him in 1895. South Africa's Rhodes University is also named after him. Rhodes set up the provisions of the Rhodes Scholarship, which is funded by his estate, and put much effort towards his vision of a Cape to Cairo Railway through British territory. The son of a vicar, Rhodes grew up in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, and was a sickly child. He was sent to South Africa by his family when he was 17 years old in the hope that the climate might improve his health. He entered the diamond trade at Kimberley in 1871, when he was 18, and over the next two decades gained near-complete domination of the world diamond market. His De Beers diamond company, formed in 1888, retains its prominence into the 21st century. Rhodes entered the Cape Parliament in 1880, and a decade later became Prime Minister. After overseeing the formation of Rhodesia during the early 1890s, he was forced to resign as Prime Minister in 1896 after the Rhodes, c. 1900 disastrous Jameson Raid, an unauthorised attack on Paul Kruger's South 7th Prime Minister of the Cape African Republic (or Transvaal).

    1 What a Strange Thing is Memory by Lucy Lindley Mitchell Molteno Introduction ‘What a strange thing is memory’. This is Lucy Molteno’s own title for this piece. And what a gem it is. It’s a great pity that she only wrote down a few pages of her memories. She started them in 1957 when she was already 83 years old. Why she stopped almost in mid sentence, having just given us a tantalising historical tidbit that she had met the famous Fabian Society intellectuals, Beatrice and Sydney Webb, who ‘had known several of the Molteno family’, we will never know. Lucy Molteno’s American family What we do have, however, is quite a lot about Lucy’s American family dating back to the days of the American Revolution in the 1770s. Lucy was an American and from a respected, upper class family whose roots in Virginia and South Carolina went back to the earliest days of settlement in the North American colonies. Lucy herself was born in 1874. This was scarcely ten years after the end of the American Civil War which had been fought over the issue of whether the enslavement of Black Americans should continue into the modern era. South African connections She also had South African connections. Her grandfather on her mother’s side was the Rev. Daniel Lindley, an American Presbyterian minister.
