Advertisements Share This Tweet Like Loading... Related From Publishers Weekly Loss is a fiercer, more uncompromising teacher, coldhearted but clear-eyed in its understanding that life is more dilemma than game, and more trial than free pass, writes bestselling author Conroy in his first work of nonfiction since The Water Is Wide 1972. Conroy is beloved for big, passionate, compulsively readable novels propelled by the emotional jet fuel of an abusive childhood. The Lords of Discipline, The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides and Beach Music are each informed by a knowledge of pain and heartache taught to him by a Marine pilot father whose nickname was the Great Santini. Here, in a re-creation of the losing basketball season Conroy and his team endured during his senior year at the Citadel, 1966- 1967, Conroy gives readers an intimate look at how suffering can be transformed to become a source of strength and inspiration. I was born to be a point guard, but not a very good one, he admits. Drawing on extensive interviews with his teammates, he chronicles, game by game, their talent and his sheer determination and grit. In Conroy's hands, sports writing becomes a vehicle to describe the love and devotion that can develop between young men. Toward the end of this moving work, Conroy explains that writing books became the form that praying takes in me. But readers will see how basketball can also be a way of reaching for something finer than a winning score. What emerges is a portrait of a young man who isn't a soldier but a knight with a great and chivalrous heart. Anyone who was a son or knows a son will be touched by this book. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal When one loses, one learns, says Conroy The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides, Beach Music in his first work of nonfiction since The Water Is Wide. A wonderfully rich, informative, and well-researched reminiscence of, primarily, his senior year as a point guard at the Citadel during the 1966-67 season, this book is a gem. Written with humility and sincerity, the volume will please former teammates in any sport, not just basketball. Despite frustrations dealing with a coach whose aberrant behavior borders on masochistic and an institution whose social customs mirror his father's brutality, Conroy excels as team captain and burgeoning writer, giving credit to his teammates and professors as they lift his playing ability and encourage him to write. In the end, the authorplayer perseveres, at times fantastically. Highly recommended for all libraries.James Thorsen, Central North Carolina Regional Lib. FREETHE GREAT SANTINI EBOOK Pat Conroy | 512 pages | 26 Mar 2002 | Random House USA Inc | 9780553381559 | English | New York, United States The Great Santini Summary | SuperSummary By dallasnews Administrator. In his novel, The Great SantiniPat Conroy spilled all the beans that a good son is never supposed to spill: He wrote about his brutal father, his cowed mother, his frightened and abused siblings, and his own defiant and terrorized young self, all thinly disguised, of course, as fiction. Like Bull Meecham in the novel, Donald Conroy really was a Marine fighter The Great Santini, really did beat and terrorize his wife and kids, really did drink to excess, really did swagger around and call himself the Great Santini. The book was a best-seller, and it was later made into a blockbuster movie starring Robert Duvall. His grandparents, aunts and uncles were horrified at the airing of family secrets, and they picketed his book events, urging people to stay away. And what of his father? What was the reaction of the brutal and sneering The Great Santini Santini? Pat Conroy, 68, lives in Beaufort, S. He's the author of 11 books — novels, memoirs and a cookbook — most of which are about that brutal upbringing. He started dropping by Conroy's apartment every morning to read the newspaper and chat. He turned into the world's most attentive grandfather. The metamorphosis didn't happen immediately, of course, nor did Donald Conroy love The Great The Great Santini right off the bat. When he first read it, he was furious. Then he wept.

Developing your thesis 1. Your first task in writing an essay of opinion is to raise a question that is open to debate and significant enough for your reader to want to know your answer. 2. Think hard and carefully about the novels you have read to find an idea they have in common and then formulate an opinion on that idea which you can develop into a research paper. 3. Choose an issue that can be argued by way of examples from the novels you have read. 4. Even after you have selected your thesis, let your opinion continue to take shape in the process of gathering and organizing your material. Ideally, an opinion is the result of the process of investigation. Rather than find facts to fit a preconceived opinion, develop an opinion to fit the facts you have found. 5. Be prepared to change your mind in the light of new evidence. The following are introductory paragraphs written by Great Valley students who have written successful research papers in the past. Read each paragraph and underline what you think is the thesis statement. 1. Willa Cather is an author who demonstrates an appreciation for an individual’s ability to withstand difficult circumstances and depicts these characters in her books as heroes. Characters such as the immigrant Alexandra in O Pioneers! And Antonia in My Antonia face many challenges: the death of family members, taming the wild land, and facing a new and unknown world. These characters endure these hardships due to an inner strength that emerges from their relationship with the land.

  • Item More Personal, More Unique, And, Therefore More Representative of the Experience of the Book Itself
Q&B Quill & Brush (301) 874-3200 Fax: (301)874-0824 E-mail: [email protected] Home Page: http://www.qbbooks.com A dear friend of ours, who is herself an author, once asked, “But why do these people want me to sign their books?” I didn’t have a ready answer, but have reflected on the question ever since. Why Signed Books? Reading is pure pleasure, and we tend to develop affection for the people who bring us such pleasure. Even when we discuss books for a living, or in a book club, or with our spouses or co- workers, reading is still a very personal, solo pursuit. For most collectors, a signature in a book is one way to make a mass-produced item more personal, more unique, and, therefore more representative of the experience of the book itself. Few of us have the opportunity to meet the authors we love face-to-face, but a book signed by an author is often the next best thing—it brings us that much closer to the author, proof positive that they have held it in their own hands. Of course, for others, there is a cost analysis, a running thought-process that goes something like this: “If I’m going to invest in a book, I might as well buy a first edition, and if I’m going to invest in a first edition, I might as well buy a signed copy.” In other words we want the best possible copy—if nothing else, it is at least one way to hedge the bet that the book will go up in value, or, nowadays, retain its value.
