L’histoire se déroule en 1969 et commence par l’embauche de Pat comme instituteur. Elle finit un an plus tard par son licenciement et par un procès. C’est l’époque de la lutte pour les droits civiques et dans le Sud, le début l’intégration des élèves noirs dans les écoles blanches. Ce livre a été écrit sous le coup de la colère. Dès le premier jour, l’auteur découvre que les enfants de sa classe, âgés de 10 à 14 ans, sont quasiment illettrés. Son récit très engagé et plein d’énergie est à la fois une dénonciation de cette injustice sociale, de l’indifférence dont l’île est victime et plus largement une dénonciation d’un Sud où le racisme est encore institutionnalisé. La chronologie est assez fluide et fonctionne comme une succession d’instantanés : sur la vie de classe et la façon dont Pat Conroy bouscule les normes, sur le Sud de l’époque, sur sa lutte incessante contre une administration qui le voit comme une menace à l’ordre établi, sur son introspection : pourquoi désire-t-il tellement changer les choses sur l’île et plus largement ébranler le Sud ? L’auteur confesse ses pêchés de jeunesse, conscient d’être à la fois idéaliste et pénitent. THE NEWS Page 12 Page 16 Student orgs collaborate, bring DarkMa er to UNH By RAOUL BIRON STAFF WRITER Hoping to foster solidarity, inspiration and acceptance, author and activist Dan Savage told LGBTQ+ youth around the world that “it gets better.” Since releasing his initial video in 2011, Savage’s message has exploded into a kind of marketed rallying cry for LGBTQ+ causes rang- ing anywhere from marriage equality to teen suicide. What happens when a three-word sentence - even one spoken on camera by hundreds of thousands - stops being enough? For Brooklyn based spoken word duo, DarkMatter, it gets bitter. On April 1, the fi rst day of UNH Campus Pride Month, the trans South Asian art and activist collaboration will occupy the Strafford room in the MUB. Why Signed Books? Reading is pure pleasure, and we tend to develop affection for the people who bring us such pleasure. Even when we discuss books for a living, or in a book club, or with our spouses or co- workers, reading is still a very personal, solo pursuit. For most collectors, a signature in a book is one way to make a mass-produced item more personal, more unique, and, therefore more representative of the experience of the book itself. Few of us have the opportunity to meet the authors we love face-to-face, but a book signed by an author is often the next best thing—it brings us that much closer to the author, proof positive that they have held it in their own hands. Of course, for others, there is a cost analysis, a running thought-process that goes something like this: “If I’m going to invest in a book, I might as well buy a first edition, and if I’m going to invest in a first edition, I might as well buy a signed copy.” In other words we want the best possible copy—if nothing else, it is at least one way to hedge the bet that the book will go up in value, or, nowadays, retain its value.

She is a participant in a program sponsored by the South Carolina Commission for the Blind that helps teens get work experience during the summer. For the entire month of June, Staycee helped us with collection maintenance by pulling worn large print off the shelf and removing the records from our catalog. She has moved hundreds of books while doing this project. She also assisted with inspecting returned digital books and removing old cassette books that need to be sent for recycling. Staycee has been a user of talking books for many years. We remember her as a young child who came to the library for our summer reading parties. We wish her the very best as she goes back to school this fall as a junior at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind in Spartanburg. Thank you, Staycee!     Pat Conroy, from My Losing Season Pat Conroy was the eldest of seven children in a military family and the victim of his father’s violence and abuse from a young age. He used his experiences as a young man growing up, moving constantly and navigating the rigid rules of the military as well as the segregated South under Jim Crow in such novels as The Water is Wide, The Great Santini, and The Lords of Discipline, a fictional account of his years at The Citadel Military College in South Carolina. The Prince of Tides remains Conroy’s most celebrated work, and each of these novels has been made into a successful motion picture. In his 2002 memoir My Losing Season, Conroy recounts his experiences as a student and a basketball player on a mediocre college team during the turbulent 1960s. In this passage, Conroy describes his August 1963 journey from Omaha, Nebraska, where his father had just been transferred, back to South Carolina where he had graduated high school in June and where he would begin his “plebe”—or freshman—year at The Citadel. CHAPTER 7: PLEBE YEAR I entered The Citadel as a walk-on, a player who makes the team without the benefit of scholarship. My first year, Mel [Thompson, coach of The Citadel] hadn't offered me a scholarship because, as he told my father, “I signed two guards a lot better than Pat,” and he was telling the truth. “Walk-on”— this still remains the proudest word I can apply to myself.     MARCHING IN STEP: THE CITADEL AND POST WORLD WAR II AMERICA by ALEXANDER STEPHENS MACAULAY, JR (Under the Direction of James C. Cobb) ABSTRACT In 1941, W.J. Cash predicted correctly that “in the coming days and probably soon, [the South] is likely to have to prove its capacity for adjustment far beyond what has been true in the past.” From 1945 to 1995, The Citadel found its “capacity for adjustment” sorely tested, and the school’s attempts to define, defend, and adapt its identity to a nation and region undergoing significant cultural, political, and social change is the subject of my dissertation. Perceived and vigorously marketed as a profoundly southern institution, The Citadel’s post World War II experience speaks to issues of southern distinctiveness and should shed light on the South’s real and imagined relationship with the rest of America. Certain authors have depicted the “Southernization of America” as a relatively recent phenomenon, and for much of its history, the South has been viewed as an island within the United States; a region operating outside the ebb and flow of the American mainstream. In the decades following World War II Citadel personnel bolstered their defense of the school’s value with conveniently selected interpretations of the past and with carefully tailored definitions of citizenship. More often than not, however, these attitudes have reflected rather than stood apart from the political and cultural values of mainstream American society, and tracking The Citadel’s appeal as an American, and not just a southern, institution may well lead one to wonder if the rest of the nation needed “Southernizing” and convince some people to acknowledge the undistilled Americanism of The Citadel.
