One of the best Kaiju stories EVER!By Garrett BaldockLike Micheal Crichton's Jurassic Park and J.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit; this has go this has has been added to my favorites when it comes to novels. Thanks to monsters like King Kong and Godzilla, Kaiju have captured my imagination in my childhood and this book has definitely quenched my thirst for giant monsters. This has also been my first Jeremy Robinson story and I have to say, being a aspiring book author, I find his imagination and talent for writing really entertaining creature features very inspiring. The story was well written, very original and packed with humor as well as horror; the monster was awesome and gigantically creative; and I fell in love with the characters as I got to know them. Speaking of which, the main protagonist, Jon Hudson, was very comical and reminded me a lot of Chris Pratt. As a matter of fact 'Lord willing' if anyone decides to make a movie of this novel I think he would be the best choice to play as Hudson. But any who, I really like this book and can't wait to read the sequels.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and did not want to put it ...By ChrisI thoroughly enjoyed this book and did not want to put it down. I was only upset to see that my library did not carry it. I plan to read all in his kaiju series. Many others are so short I cant imagine reading them but this is a full book or novel and Im glad. It was not wordy or filled with wasted drama. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the genre and or sci-fi.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fast-paced and funBy RealWoman8Another good monster book from Jeremy Robinson. I really loved The Apocalypse Machine, so I thought I'd try this one next. While not quite as rich with post-apoc imagery and destruction as Apoc Machine, Project Nemesis still had an interesting premise and a great protagonist, and a sense of humor that kept the narrative from bogging down. The character I found most interesting was Endo, the mysterious bodyguard, who added ambiguity and depth to some otherwise fun but somewhat two- dimensional characters. I would give it 4 1/2 stars and am happy to round it up to five based on creativity and a fast- paced plot. Jon Hudson, lead investigator for the Department of Homeland Security's Fusion Center-P, thinks his job is a joke. While other Fusion Centers focus on thwarting terrorist activity, Hudson's division is tasked with handling paranormal threats to national security, of which there have been zero during his years at the DHS. When yet another Sasquatch sighting leads to a research facility in the backwoods of Maine, disguised as an abandoned Nike missile site, Hudson's job becomes deadly serious. Hudson and the local Sherriff, Ashley Collins, suddenly find themselves on the run from a ruthless ex-Special Forces security team, but the human threat is short-lived as something very much not-human destroys the facility and heads for civilization, leaving only a single clue behind-a name scrawled in blood-Nemesis. Working with his team at Fusion Center-P, Sherriff Collins and a surly helicopter pilot named Woodstock, Hudson pursues the creature known as Nemesis, attempts to uncover the corporate secrets behind its creation and accidental release, and tries to comprehend why several clues lead to a murdered little girl named Maigo. But as the body-count explodes, along with the monster's size, it quickly becomes clear that nothing short of a full military response can slow Nemesis's progress. Coordinating with every branch of the U.S. military, Hudson simultaneously searches for clues about Nemesis's origins and motivations, and leads the counterattack that will hopefully stop the monster before it reaches Boston and its one million residents. Witness the birth of a legend as Jeremy Robinson, bestselling author of SecondWorld and Ragnarok, combines the pacing of Matthew Reilly with the mystery of James Rollins and creates the first iconic American Kaiju* story since King Kong. *Kaiju is Japanese for "strange beast." The genre includes classic monsters such as Godzilla, Gamera, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. BAMcinématek presents Joe Dante at the Movies, 18 days of 40 genre-busting films, Aug 5—24 “One of the undisputed masters of modern genre cinema.” —Tom Huddleston, Time Out London Dante to appear in person at select screenings Aug 5—Aug 7 The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Jul 18, 2016/Brooklyn, NY—From Friday, August 5, through Wednesday, August 24, BAMcinématek presents Joe Dante at the Movies, a sprawling collection of Dante’s essential film and television work along with offbeat favorites hand-picked by the director. Additionally, Dante will appear in person at the August 5 screening of Gremlins (1984), August 6 screening of Matinee (1990), and the August 7 free screening of rarely seen The Movie Orgy (1968). Original and unapologetically entertaining, the films of Joe Dante both celebrate and skewer American culture. Dante got his start working for Roger Corman, and an appreciation for unpretentious, low-budget ingenuity runs throughout his films. The series kicks off with the essential box-office sensation Gremlins (1984—Aug 5, 8 & 20), with Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. Billy (Galligan) finds out the hard way what happens when you feed a Mogwai after midnight and mini terrors take over his all-American town. Continuing the necessary viewing is the “uninhibited and uproarious monster bash,” (Michael Sragow, New Yorker) Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990—Aug 6 & 20). Dante’s sequel to his commercial hit plays like a spoof of the original, with occasional bursts of horror and celebrity cameos. In The Howling (1981), a news anchor finds herself the target of a shape-shifting serial killer in Dante’s take on the werewolf genre.

BAMcinématek presents Ghosts and Monsters: Postwar Japanese Horror, Oct 26—Nov 1 Highlighting 10 tales of rampaging beasts and supernatural terror September 21, 2018/Brooklyn, NY—From Friday, October 26 through Thursday, November 1 BAMcinématek presents Ghosts and Monsters: Postwar Japanese Horror, a series of 10 films showcasing two strands of Japanese horror films that developed after World War II: kaiju monster movies and beautifully stylized ghost stories from Japanese folklore. The series includes three classic kaiju films by director Ishirô Honda, beginning with the granddaddy of all nuclear warfare anxiety films, the original Godzilla (1954—Oct 26). The kaiju creature features continue with Mothra (1961—Oct 27), a psychedelic tale of a gigantic prehistoric and long dormant moth larvae that is inadvertently awakened by island explorers seeking to exploit the irradiated island’s resources and native population. Destroy All Monsters (1968—Nov 1) is the all-star edition of kaiju films, bringing together Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, as the giants stomp across the globe ending with an epic battle at Mt. Fuji. Also featured in Ghosts and Monsters is Hajime Satô’s Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell (1968—Oct 27), an apocalyptic blend of sci-fi grotesquerie and Vietnam-era social commentary in which one disaster after another befalls the film’s characters. First, they survive a plane crash only to then be attacked by blob-like alien creatures that leave the survivors thirsty for blood. In Nobuo Nakagawa’s Jigoku (1960—Oct 28) a man is sent to the bowels of hell after fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run that kills a yakuza.

  • GOTHIC ETHICS: SEEING the BEAST in OUR OWN EYE Patrick Mccormick Monstrous Pedagogues Can a Monster Story Teach Us Something
1 GOTHIC ETHICS: SEEING THE BEAST IN OUR OWN EYE Patrick McCormick Monstrous Pedagogues Can a monster story teach us something about morality? Can such a tale be a parable holding up a funhouse mirror to the beast lurking in our own hearts? Can it uncover the evil within us that makes fiends and scapegoats of our neighbors? I think it can, and my purpose here is to show how three classic monster stories do just that. Recommending monster stories as a tool for teaching about moral evil feels unseemly, even perilous, like bringing Carrie to the ball. When a moral theologian like Anne Patrick employs fiction, she introduces us to George Eliot, Graham Greene and Iris Murdoch. Richard Gula offers up passages from Mark Twain, Robert Bolt and Carlos Fuentes. Robert McAfee Brown gives us Samuel Becket, Albert Camus and Alice Walker. What are Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and Dracula doing in company such as this? For a monster story is a beast. Like the misshapen maniacs trolling the caverns and graveyards of these tales of the crypt, the hunchbacked stepchild of the Gothic novel is an ogre inhabiting literature’s nether regions. The overgrown prose has been written by a hand with too many fingers. The razor thin characters barely muster a shadow. The plots have the predictability of a McDonald’s floor plan. And the ghoulish violence has us rubbernecking like voyeurs at a train wreck. Greeted by many critics and literati with the same revulsion Victor Frankenstein felt for his own “monstrous” creation, these crude “penny dreadfuls” and “shilling shockers” lack the “sense and sensibilities” of serious fiction or the conscience of the social novel.
