Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters History: Founded 3 April 1908, the Utah Academy of Sciences was organized "to promote investigations and diffuse knowledge in all areas of science." Beginning in 1923, the Academy started publishing the papers presented in its annual meetings in Proceedings. In June 1933 at the annual meeting, the Academy was enlarged to include arts and letters, and the name was changed to the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters. Articles of incorporation and non-profit organization status were accepted by the Academy membership at the spring meeting in April 1959. In 1977, the name of the journal of the Academy was changed from Proceedings to Encyclia. It became a refereed journal at this time. In the mid 1980s, the scope of the Academy was expanded further to include (1) business, (2) education, (3) engineering, (4) library information and instruction, and (5) health, physical education, and recreation. Beginning with the 1998 issue, the journal became The Journal of the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters. Annual Meeting: The Academy's annual meetings are normally held in the spring on one of the Utah campuses of higher education. The plenary session is called the Tanner Lecture, endowed by Mr. O.C. Tanner in 1986. Best Paper Awards: The best paper presented in every division is given a cash award, which is presented at the Academy's "Awards Evening" held the following fall. Distinguished Service Awards: The Academy recognizes outstanding contributions to teaching and scholarship by means of annual Distinguished Service Awards, alternating every other year between disciplines. Membership: When the Academy was founded in 1908, membership was by nomination, ratified by the Council, and elected by a "three- fourths votes of members present." Today, the Academy's membership is available by application. Institutional Members: All Utah institutions of higher education are members of the Utah Academy. The Academy appreciates their patronage. Publication Policy The Journal of the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters publishes works in all of the fields of study encompassed in the Academy’s mission. Pa- pers published in The Journal of the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Let- ters are drawn from papers presented by members in good standing at the annual conference of the Utah Academy. To qualify for publication, the papers must be recommended through a refereeing system. Presenters are encouraged to publish their paper in The Journal of the Utah Academy. The Journal’s criteria are that a submission is (1) fresh, mean- ingful scholarly insight on its subject; (2) readable and well written; and (3) of general interest for an academic readership beyond the author’s field. If you wish your paper to be considered for publication in The Journal, please submit a Microsoft Word document to the section editor of the appropri- ate section by the indicated deadline.     Station One Guide KINETIC ENERGY: THE ENERGY OF MOTION POTENTIAL ENERGY: ENERGY OF POSITION & STORED ENERGY MATERIALS * NOT INCLUDED IN KIT 1 Set of Happy/Sad Balls 1 Superball *1 Meter Stick 1 Yo-yo *1 Cup of Hot Water (not boiling) 1 Toy Car *Table with hard, flat surface 1 Tongs Balloons PREPARATION - PART ONE: COLLISIONS Part One Materials: Happy/sad balls, superball, hot water, meter stick, tongs, table with a hard, flat surface. n Study the sample script to learn the experiment. n Practice your presentation. n Examine the equipment. The happy ball is the hard, bouncy ball. The sad ball is the softer ball. n Get hot water from your teacher. The water should be very hot, but not boiling. BE CAREFUL! The water could easily burn you or someone else. Use the tongs to place the sad ball in the hot water and to take it out of the hot water. PROCEDURE - PART ONE: COLLISIONS n Have the students examine the balls while you explain motion as energy. n Drop the balls from a height of 1 meter onto the table while you explain collisions and kinetic and potential energy. n Use the meter stick to measure the rebound of the balls; explain how the potential energy is changed into motion, heat and sound. n Give the sad ball energy by placing it into the hot water, using the tongs. After one minute, remove the ball with the tongs and drop it again, measuring the rebound. Explain that the ball bounces higher when it is hot because it contains more heat energy and cant absorb as much heat energy when it is dropped.

Courtesy of the Artist. 1 2 BLURRING BOUNDARIES TRAVELING EXHIBITION SERVICE 3 erle Fine’s declaration for the hierarchy of distilled form, immaculate line, and pure color came close to P being the mantra of 1930s modern art—particularly that of American Abstract Artists (AAA), the subject of a new exhibition organized by the Ewing Gallery and the Clara M. Eagle Gallery entitled Blurring Boundaries: The Women of American Abstract Artists, 1936 – Present. Founded during the upheavals of America’s Great Depression, AAA was established at a time when museums and galleries were still conservative in their exhibition offerings. With its challenging imagery and elusive meaning, abstraction was often presented as “not American,” largely because of its derivation from the European avant-garde. Consequently, American abstract artists received little attention from museum and gallery owners. Even the Museum of Modern Art, which mounted its first major exhibition of abstract art in 1936, hesitated to recognize American artists working within the vein of abstraction. (MoMA’s exhibition Cubism and Abstract Art, groundbreaking at the time for its non- representational content, filled four floors with artwork, largely by Europeans.) This lack of recognition from MoMA angered abstract artists working in New York and was the impetus behind the founding of American Abstract Artists later that year.

    Hello everybody! I hope that you all are staying healthy and safe. I’ve compiled another list of fun games and activities that you can do alone or with your family. Try them out! They’re tons of fun! -Mr. Walters Racket Sports Yes, tennis and badminton can be games for kids to play alone! They can volley tennis balls off a wall, bounce them on the ground with the racket, or bounce balls and birdies up from a racquet held horizontally. How many can they get in a row? Can they top their personal best? It's actually a great way to hone their hand-eye coordination, which is useful for many other things. ​ Hula Hoop Kids can practice hula hooping indoors or out. Challenge them to count how many revolutions they can do or how long they can keep the hoop spinning without dropping it. Watch a few hooping videos online so your child can see what kinds of tricks are possible, too. For instance, they can try to master the technique of working the hoop from the hips to the neck and back down. Dancing Did you ever hear the expression, "dance like no one's watching"? Many people are nervous about dancing in public, but you can encourage your child to dance alone and work on some confidence-building skills.​ All it takes is music. You can also use games, such as Just Dance or Zumba Classes. These can help kids build a repertoire of moves. Going for a Ride Encouraging your child to go on a little bike or scooter ride is a great option.

Courtesy of the Artist. 1 TRAVELING EXHIBITION SERVICE 3 erle Fine’s declaration for the hierarchy of distilled form, immaculate line, and pure color came close to P being the mantra of 1930s modern art—particularly that of American Abstract Artists (AAA), the subject of a new exhibition organized by the Ewing Gallery and the Clara M. Eagle Gallery entitled Blurring Boundaries: The Women of American Abstract Artists, 1936 – Present. Founded during the upheavals of America’s Great Depression, AAA was established at a time when museums and galleries were still conservative in their exhibition offerings. With its challenging imagery and elusive meaning, abstraction was often presented as “not American,” largely because of its derivation from the European avant-garde. Consequently, American abstract artists received little attention from museum and gallery owners. Even the Museum of Modern Art, which mounted its first major exhibition of abstract art in 1936, hesitated to recognize American artists working within the vein of abstraction. (MoMA’s exhibition Cubism and Abstract Art, groundbreaking at the time for its non- representational content, filled four floors with artwork, largely by Europeans.) This lack of recognition from MoMA angered abstract artists working in New York and was the impetus behind the founding of American Abstract Artists later that year.

    Siteswap Ben’s Benjamin Beever ([email protected]) AD2000 Writings on juggling, for: 1) Jugglers 2) Mathematicians 3) Other curious people ABOUT THE BOOK The scientific understanding of ‘air-juggling’ has improved dramatically over the last 2 decades. This book aims to bring the reader right up to the forefront of current knowledge (or pretty close anyway). There are 3 kinds of people who might be reading this (see cover). As far as possible, I wanted to cater for everyone in the same book. Maybe this would help jugglers to appreciate maths, mathematicians to get into juggling, or even non-juggling, non-mathematicians to develop a favourable perception of the juggling game. In order to fulfil this ambition, I have indicated which parts of the text are aimed at a specific kind of reader. Different fonts have been used to indicate the main intended audience. Everyone (with many exceptions) should be able to understand most of the writings for the curious. However, non-jugglers may not be able to envisage the patterns discussed in the jugglers text, and non-mathematicians may find some of the concepts in the technical sections hard to get their grey matter around. I must point out however, that juggling is a fairly complicated business. It can be very hard to understand what’s going on in a juggling pattern when it’s being juggled in front of you, and it’s not always easy to understand on paper. This book introduces ‘Generalised siteswap’ (GS) notation, and shows how most air-juggling patterns can be formalised within the GS framework.
