We investigate entity framing of political figures through the use of names and titles in German online discourse, enhancing current research in entity framing through titling and naming that concentrates on English only. We collect tweets that mention prominent German politicians and annotate them for stance. We find that the formality of naming in these tweets correlates positively with their stance. This confirms sociolinguistic observations that naming and titling can have a status-indicating function and suggests that this function is dominant in German tweets mentioning political figures. We also find that this status-indicating function is much weaker in tweets from users that are politically left-leaning than in tweets by right-leaning users. This is in line with observations from moral psychology that left-leaning and right-leaning users assign different importance to maintaining social hierarchies.     Is there a case for rekindled democracy assistance in Central and Eastern Europe? International IDEA 25th Anniversary Europe Webinar Thursday 19 November, 11h00-13h00 Background In the two decades following the fall of the Berlin Wall, European and US governments undertook considerable efforts to support reforms for strengthening democratic governance in Central Europe. This support included efforts to foster multi-party politics and institutionalization of political parties, reforming public administration bodies, strengthening parliaments and judicial bodies, supporting independent media and civil society organizations – all vital pillars for a well-functioning democracy. After the Central and Eastern European countries joined the European Union, much of the international democracy assistance ended too, as western donors considered the region to have accomplished the necessary milestones in its democratic transformation and having passed the point of democratic no-return. Democracy’s checks-and-balances, they argued, had made a reversal toward non-democracy practically impossible. Throughout the last decade, this assumption of democratic irreversibility has come under increasing pressure. In 2019, the Global State of Democracy Indices measured that democracy in Central Europe had declined for the fourth consecutive year. In its 2020 report, Freedom House classified Hungary as a hybrid regime, having declined further from its earlier status of a semi-consolidated democracy, and thus breaking the standard of democratic conformity within the European Union, a multilateral body that itself aims to be a supporter of democracy worldwide. Civil society organizations, and more broadly civic space – which are conventionally considered key factors in building societal and institutional resilience against democratic backsliding – have become increasingly targeted.

Germany’s Reluctance Towards pan-European Banking Resolution by Annika Stahlhut (June 2014) Abstract In the recent two years the European Banking Union has been a chief project in European financial integration. Apart from European banking supervision and attempts to integrate deposit insurance on EU-level the member states have agreed to also harmonize the resolution of banks: A Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM) seeks to protect taxpayers in Europe from assuming the costs of resolution and to maintain financial stabilty in the internal market when banks are wound up. Although states have therefor charged the Commission to develop a common policy for banking resolution, Germany gains particular attention in European negotiations for objecting to the regulation establishing a single framework. Newspapers report that the German finance minister has announced to block the resolution mechanism (Schäfers, 2014, January 21), for which he is criticized sharply – even by parties on domestic level. It therefore seems as if domestic opinions on European banking resolution depart substantially wherefore the German position appears worth for an in-depth study. To this end European integration of banking resolution is embedded into the theoretical framework of liberal intergovernmentalism that provides for a liberal theory on national preference formation.

Dagegen fiel das ordentliche Finanzergebnis (Zinserträge, Mieten, Dividenden abzgl. Grundstücksabschrei- bungen und -aufwendungen) mit € 24,3 Mio. (Vorjahr € 23,3 Mio.) erfreulich aus. Die Wertpapier-Spezialfonds schütteten insgesamt € 20,0 Mio. aus. Nach Verwaltungskosten und Dotierung der Kapitalerhaltungsrücklage verblieb für Förderzwecke ein Betrag von € 17,9 Mio. Es erfolgten 158 Bewilligungen. Auf die drei Satzungsbereiche verteilten sich die Bewilligungen wie folgt: Kunst und Kultur € 4,1 Mio., Wissenschaft € 9,3 Mio. und Bildung € 4,5 Mio. Etwa 5% des Fördervolumens entfiel auf Projekte im Ausland. Der Aufwand für die Verwaltung der Stiftung erhöhte sich leicht auf € 3,4 Mio. (+2,3%). Die Personalaufwendungen lagen nahezu unverändert bei € 2,5 Mio.; der Pensionsrückstellung waren € 202.000,- zuzuführen.

Mai 2009 An einem Freitagnachmittag, Ende April, hat Angela Merkel ein weiteres Stück Boden unter den Füßen verloren. Rüdiger Schuck und seine Jungs haben es verschwinden lassen. Schuck ist Polier einer Templiner Straßenbaufirma. Er und seine drei Kollegen bekamen den Auftrag, zwischen zwei Wochenenden einen 120 Meter langen Streifen uraltes uckermärkisches Pflaster mit einer Asphaltschicht zu überziehen. Er gehört zu der schmalen Straße, die zwischen Feldern, Seen und Wäldern zum Dorf Hohenwalde führt, wo das Wochenendhaus der Bundeskanzlerin steht. Der Weg erklimmt hier einen kleinen Hügel, den letzten vor dem Dorf, dort, wo der Besucher aus der Stadt bereits anfängt, sich zu erholen, wie man so sagt, und war an den Rändern ziemlich ausgefahren. "Die schönen ollen Katzenköppe sind natürlich weg jetze", sagt Rüdiger Schuck, zündet sich eine Zigarette an und schaut auf das schwarzglänzende Asphaltband, das wie ein Flicken auf dem alten Feldweg klebt. Er kann sich nicht vorstellen, dass es der Bundeskanzlerin so gefällt, aber Auftrag ist Auftrag. Freitagmittag müssen sie fertig sein. Ab da öffnet sich das Zeitfenster für das Eintreffen der Kanzlerin, hat ihm einer der Polizisten ausgerichtet, die in dem weißen Würfel Wache halten, der gegenüber dem Kanzlerinnenwochenendhaus steht. Das Zeitfenster für das Eintreffen der Kanzlerin in Hohenwalde klappte dann später zu als gedacht, weil am Freitagnachmittag in der Nähe ihres Mietshauses in Berlin-Mitte eine russische Fliegerbombe gefunden wurde.

Juni 2021 bei freiem Eintritt geöffnet Zeughaus schließt für Sanierung und Ausstellungs- erneuerung | Pei-Bau bleibt geöffnet Noch bis einschließlich Sonntag, den 27. Juni 2021 lädt das Deutsche Historische Museum bei freiem Eintritt dazu ein, von der Dauerausstellung Abschied zu nehmen. Wie das Deutsche Historische Museum und das Bundesamt für Bauwesen und Raumordnung (BBR) bereits Anfang September 2020 gemeinsam bekannt Deutsches Historisches Museum gaben, bleibt das historische Zeughaus ab Ende Juni bis voraussichtlich Ende 2025 für notwendige Instandsetzungen und für die Erneuerung der Dauerausstellung Abteilungsdirektor Kommunikation Dr. Stephan Adam geschlossen. Grund für die Schließung ist vor allem die notwendige Sanierung der Unter den Linden 2 Klimatechnik des Zeughauses, die eine vollständige Freiräumung der 10117 Berlin Ausstellungsbereiche erfordert. Die Baumaßnahmen werden vom Bundesamt für Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit Bauwesen und Raumordnung (BBR) federführend koordiniert. Die bislang im Daniela Lange T +49 30 20304-410 Zeughaus ausgestellten 6.000 Objekte werden für die nächsten Jahre in einem [email protected] Zwischendepot gelagert.     David Owen & Christian Schemmel Strength in Division Left-Right Antagonism and the Practice of ‘Split Leadership’ In ‘The Discourses’, the infamously astute republican thinker Niccolo Machiavelli argued that the strength and vitality of the Roman Republic, compared to other republics, lay in the fact that it successfully institutionalised the inevitable antagonism between the people and the elite. Thus, each held the threat posed to the republic by the other in check, and republican liberty was preserved. Machiavelli mercilessly mocked the pieties of republican thinkers who imagined a harmonious transcendence of this antagonism. He recognised that a sustainable balance of opposing forces could produce something stronger and more resilient than efforts at harmonious unity could realistically hope to achieve. Machiavelli’s insight is one that the Labour Party, in the midst of its current travails, would do well to remember. The history of the Labour Party is also one of antagonism between opposed forces. Simplifying somewhat, we can see the recent implosion as a recurrence of a tension that has structured the history of the Party from its inception. This tension plays out between a Left that is focused on Labour as a transformative social movement, and a Right that is focused on the acquisition of Parliamentary power (with plenty of folk in between). When the Party functions at its best, the role of the Left is to keep the Right honest, to block its tendency to surrender too much in its electoral pursuit of power, to prioritize short-term tactics over long-term strategy. The role of the Right is to keep the Left focused on the point that principle is impotent in the absence of power, that sacrificing electoral success (or deluding yourself concerning the prospects of such success) for ideological reasons surrenders the field to an enemy who will not advance the interests of the people that the Labour Party is meant to serve.
