NHESP is responsible for the conservation and protection of hundreds of species that are not hunted, fished, trapped, or commercially harvested in the state. The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. Lodicules 2, free, fairly large, rectangular, hyaline. Stamens 3. Caryopsis narrowly ellipsoid, apex with glossy rounded caplike appendage with central knob from style base, embryo small, hilum linear, slightly shorter than caryopsis. Leaf anatomy: non-Kranz; microhairs absent. x = 10. One species: China, Japan, E Russia. This is a unispecific tribe of uncertain affinity, found in cool, temperate forests. 54. BRYLKINIA F. KEW BULLETIN 62: 355–373 (2007) 355 A century of progress in grass systematics Khidir W. Hilu1 Summary. This paper presents an overview of progress in grass systematics with a focus on the past century and assesses its current status and future outlook. In concert with systematic biology, progress in grass systematics has gone through some leaps caused by the introduction of new approaches or emphasis on existing ones. Chromosome cytology, anatomy and chemistry provided useful information, but major recent contributions have come from advances in bioinformatics and molecular biology. Consequently, grass systematics has moved from an initial intuitive classification and phylogenetics to one incorporating analytical phenetic approaches, and culminating in the current stage of analytic phylogeny. As a result, a refined picture of grass phylogeny is emerging with good resolution at the base, but the tree lacks robustness in some places such as the monophyly of the “BEP” subfamilies and the relationships within the PACCAD clade. Systematic structure of a number of subfamilies is better understood now, but further studies are needed. With the rapid advancement in molecular systematic and bioinformatic tools, and in conjunction with a wealth of literature available on structural characters, a more refined picture of grass taxonomy and evolution is expected. However, caution needs to be exercised in our interpretations to avoid hasty decisions that can translate into regress rather than progress. This is an exciting time in the history of grass systematics and, undoubtedly, is a period of collaborative rather than individual effort. Key words. Michaelson Alaska Natural Heritage Program Environment and Natural Resources Institute University of Alaska Anchorage 707 A Street Anchorage, Alaska 99501 National Park Service Alaska Region Inventory & Monitoring Program NPS Report : April 2004 Cooperative Agreement No. 1443CA991000013 Funding Source: National Park Service, Inventory & Monitoring Program 1 GLACIER BAY NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE VASCULAR PLANT INVENTORY ABSTRACT In 2001 and 2003 the Alaska Natural Heritage Program (AKNHP) conducted vascular plant field inventories in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in accordance with a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service. The primary goal was to document greater than 90% of the vascular plant species expected to occur within the park and significantly improve our understanding of current species distributions. The inventory targeted diverse habitat types and poorly-sampled areas. The AKNHP staff visited eight diverse ecogeographic regions and sampled intensively within these regions from late June to mid-August, 2001 and late June to early July in 2003. A total of 555 specimens were collected, recorded, pressed, and curated. Of the 333 individual taxa, 172 are new records for the park and an additional 44 represent verifications of previously unverified reports. A number of finds were significant range extensions or taxa of conservation concern. Collections were made of four globally restricted species: Botrychium ascendens (G2G3-S2 AKNHP rank), Platanthera chorisiana (G3-S3), Eleocharis kamtschatica (G4-S2S3), and Salix setchelliana (G4-S3).
