Focus is given to the dynamic interplay between two complementary movements: 1) the creative process whereby charismatic, media-savvy priests in the Kii Peninsula (south of Kyoto) have re-invented traditional practices and training spaces to attract and satisfy the needs of diverse urban lay practitioners, and 2) the myriad ways diverse urban ascetic householders integrate lessons learned from mountain austerities in their daily lives in Tokyo and Osaka.

So, it is easy to access from Tokyo. The mountain is known for its magnificent view of Mount Fuji. This is my third time to climb the mountain. At the first and second visits, I couldn’t see Mount Fuji clearly due to thick clouds. But this time, on a fine day in February (2018), I can finally see a satisfying scenery. Its snow-covered summit, unique to winter, pleases my eyes. Originally, I planned to go by car to the Kaminikkawa Pass near the summit from the Daibosatsu Pass starting point. But the road was closed during the winter. So, I had changed the plan and decided to choose the route via the Marukawa Pass to the summit. When I arrive there at around 6 am, a few vehicles have already parked. Before the departure, I have talked with the driver of the car arriving right after me about today’s weather and the course we choose. Then, we proceed to the different courses. I am walking through a forest zone with a relatively steep slope for a while.

  • This Paper Is Dedicated to Donald Arthur Norman, Professor Emeritus
This paper is dedicated to Donald Arthur Norman, professor emeritus at the University of California, San Diego and Northwestern University on the occasion of his 80th birthday (December 25, 2015) The head/shoulder/flank/foot of a mountain: The metaphorical projection of human bodies to objects OKIMOTO Masanori* ABSTRACT As Lehrer (1974: 135) writes: “It is not surprising to find that languages have semantic extensions similar to those in English”, body-part terms are metaphorically used in languages around the world. Looking at some expressions using body-part nouns, it should be noted that there are almost the same meanings among some languages. For example, it is known that there are expressions relatively common in English and Japanese such as ‘the head of a nail/page/screw/bed’, ‘the face of a wall/building/house/card/coin/document/mat’, ‘the eye of a needle/typhoon/rope’, and ‘the mouth of a pitcher/bottle/cave/pit/harbor/bay/well/cannon/trumpet’. Observing these examples, it is found that they include a specific body-part term such as the head, face, eye, and mouth on the basis of individual partial similarities between body parts and object parts. On the other hand, it can be noticed that there is another type of metaphorical expression which is an extension of the entire Figure of a human being with several body-part terms to one whole object. For instance, expressions such as ‘the leg/arm/back of a chair’, ‘the mouth/neck/ear/trunk of a pot’, ‘the mouth/trunk/bottom of a bowl’, ‘the head/neck/belly/waist/body of a guitar’, and ‘the head/shoulder/flank/foot of a mountain’ are included in this type.

FRANKLIN United States Forest Service, Forestry Sciences Laboratory, Corvallis, Oregon 97331 USA T. MAEDA, Y. OHSUMI, M. MATSUI, and H. YAGI Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, P.O. Box 2, Ushiku, Ibaraki, 300-12, Japan AND GLENN M. HAWK School of Forestry, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 97331 USA Abstract. Mature subalpine forest communities were sampled at four locations in central Honshu, Japan—Mounts Fuji and Ontake and the Yatsugatake and Chichibu Mountains. Data were subjected to similarity-ordination and association analyses. There are three major groups of communities: Tsuga diversifolialmoss, Abies spp./herb, and conifer/Sasa. Tsuga/moss forest understories are depauperate in vascular plants or dominated by ericads such as Rhododendron and Menziesia and have very stony soils. Abies/herb forests have luxuriant understories in which herbs and ferns are conspicuous: they occur over a wide range of soil conditions. Conifer/Sasa forests have extremely dense layers of dwarf bamboo (Sasa spp.) 1-1.5 m in height and occur on deep, fine-textured volcanic-ash soils. Compo- sition and structure of 11 community types and phases belonging to these groups are described. Successional trends appear to favor the more shade-tolerant Abies mariesii and Abies veitchii over Tsuga diversifolia and Picea jezoensis var. hondoensis although this varies with site. Japanese forests have many similarities with those in the eastern United States, but the dwarf bamboo communities are strictly an Asian phenomenon. Key words: Abies spp.; Japan; Picea jezoensis; Sasa spp.; subalpine forests; succession; Tsuga diversifolia.
