  • The Coinage of Southern England, 796-840
THE COINAGE OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND, 796-840 C. E. BLUNT, C. S. S. LYON, and B. H. I. H. STEWART INTRODUCTORY WE think it desirable to explain how this paper came to be written under our joint names. For some years we have independently been aware of the shortcomings of the accepted chronology and classification of the coinage of the southern kingdoms in the age of the decline of the power of Mercia following the death of Offa. One of us, too, has been unhappy at the doubt which has been cast on the authenticity of certain coins in the Mercian series. Research in both these fields led us to write papers, read before the Society in successive years,1 that not only overlapped to an appreciable extent but which happily showed a very broad measure of agreement on the interpretation of the surviving material. We therefore felt that a single definitive publication, resulting from the integra- tion of our separate researches, would be more valuable than two distinct papers, and this we now offer. Brooke classified the ninth-century coinage according to the kingdom from which a named ruler derived his primary authority. While this may be a satisfactory basis for the coinages of the kings of Kent and of East Anglia, whose mints were, of necessity, located within their own immediate territories, it is quite unsuitable for the issues of the kings of Mercia, who were at times in a position to employ these same mints to strike the bulk of their own coinage. This is also true to a lesser extent, at a later stage, of the coins of the kings of Wessex.

D2.3 Textual watermark description standard 1. Introduction This paper presents a second version of the textual watermark description standard (see also deliverable no. 8, D2.1, Watermarks standard v.1). As described in the description of work at the beginning of the project, this textual watermark description standard should be able to achieve two aims: first, a common nomenclature in the form of a thesaurus for all relevant terms of describing watermarks. The thesaurus presented in this paper gives the possibility to describe each type of watermark exactly with a common name in four languages. Second, the textual watermark description standard offers a classification scheme for hierarchically organized watermark types. Both aims, nomenclature and classification scheme, are necessary to reach a unified model for a better matching of the content of the existing digital watermark databases.

  • Blood on the Cross: the Crucifixus Dolorosus and Violence in Italian Medieval Art
BLOOD ON THE CROSS: THE CRUCIFIXUS DOLOROSUS AND VIOLENCE IN ITALIAN MEDIEVAL ART by Meredith D. Raucher A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Baltimore, Maryland November, 2015 © 2015 Meredith D. Raucher All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Blood on the Cross investigates contemporary perceptions of the violent imagery of crucifixi dolorosi in Italy. Crucifixi dolorosi are life-sized wood crucifixes that present the painfully stretched and contorted, often startlingly bloody body of Christ. They proliferated across Europe in the late thirteenth century, particularly in Germany’s Rhine region and across Italy. Deriving from no clear artistic predecessor, the Italian crucifixi dolorosi have been labeled foreign, resulting in their persistent marginalization from the history of Italian medieval art. Previous scholarship generally sought out the origins of the image type, most often cited as Cologne. My dissertation takes a different approach by investigating the previously unexplored questions of how these objects functioned and were perceived by contemporary viewers. Arguing that the crucifixi dolorosi were a visual means of making late-medieval theological concepts, especially scholastic concepts of vision and beauty, accessible to ordinary viewers, it studies the Italian crucifixes as objects in their own right. My dissertation investigates the crucifixes at their points of intersection with contemporary devotional, scientific, and theological concern. Through their striking imagery, the crucifixi dolorosi called on beholders to regard them as loci of contact with the Divine and as instruments to aid in the devotional quest to imitate Christ. They compelled viewers to confront the limitations of visual representation and facilitated the ascent from physical to spiritual seeing.

  • A Glossary of Coin Terms Used to Describe English Coins
A glossary of coin terms used to describe English coins Reference works for coins are generally presented as lists of descriptions of individual coin types, sometimes with a few illustrations. The terms used in the descriptions can be unfamiliar and confusing. This is a short guide to the basic terms used to describe English coins. It is divided into two sections, crosses and other elements. It deals predominantly with the symbols and designs of English hammered coins. Roman coins and Anglo-Saxon sceats have a different style and terminology in describing them. Many of the terms used to describe these coins originate in heraldry and use language with French roots. A dictionary of heraldic terms would be a good place to start for any term not covered here. • The Wooden «Chasuble Madonnas» from Ger, Ix, Targasona and Talló
LOCVS AMŒNVS 9, 2007-2008 31 - 50 The wooden «Chasuble Madonnas» from Ger, Ix, Targasona and Talló About the iconography of Catalan Madonna statues in the Romanesque period Tim Heilbronner Doctoral candidate Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin [email protected] Abstract Numerous wooden Madonna statues of the Romanesque style have survived from medieval Catalonia, which show the Virgin as sedes sapientiae. The thematized exemplars from Ger (second half 12th century), Ix (last third 12th century), Targasona (early 13th century) attract the attention of today's viewer by an iconographic peculiarity. Explicitly, they show the enthroned Mother of God, as it will be pointed out, in the priestly chasuble. The chasuble most probably represents Mary's significance as symbol of the hierarchical or institutionalized church and also alludes to the conception of Mary being interpreted as priest or ministerial priest, which became more and more popular in the 12th century. The throne representations of the statues from Ger and Ix, which refer undoubtedly to the famous episcopal throne from the Girona Cathedral by its formal structure, will be related to this significant meaning, too. The icono graphic type of the Catalan «Chasuble Madonna» is not to be found in the art of wood carving first, but in Romanesque mural paintings in the Pyrenean Valleys of North-West Cataloia. The historical and cultural sphere, which could have been responsible for the development and dissemination of this Madonna type respectively, will be discussed in the present article in the context of the 11th and 12th century church reform in Catalonia. Key words: Romanesque Madonna statues, Catalonia, church reform Resum A Catalunya han sobreviscut nombroses escultures d’estil romànic de la Verge, que la repre senten com a sedes sapientiae.
