THE BIG PICTURE Week of April 9, 2018 BUDA TO CELEBRATE MAIN STREET WEEK WITH HERITAGE TREE FEST The Buda Main Street Program will host the “Oaks Alive Heritage Tree Fest” on Saturday, April 21 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. This family -friendly event is free and open to the public and will take place under the canopies of the Celebration Oaks along Main St. We will have a dozen activities for all ages stretching from the Buda Mill & Grain Co. to the Greenbelt. In addition, there will be live music in the gazebo at the Greenbelt. The event is part of a week-long celebration marking Buda’s first anniversary as an official Texas Main Street City. First Lady of Texas, Cecilia Abbott, officially welcomed Buda as the 89th Texas Main Street City on April 18, 2017. Leading up to the Oaks Alive Heritage Tree Fest, the Main Street Program will celebrate the anniversary with social media videos and facts featuring local downtown businesses. Main street programs across the country focus on downtown revitalization through historic preservation and Buda is no different. Buda’s historic downtown is lined with heritage trees up and down Main St., coined the Celebration Oaks. The Celebration Oaks are comprised of ten oak trees located in Old Town Buda and two additional trees located on the property of the Buda Mill & Grain Co. Each tree is named after key figures in Buda’s history, from founder Cornelia Trimble, who greets you as you enter Main St. from the north side, to Geronimo, who as local folklore has it, would sell his jewelry under the tree at the corner of Main St. and FM 2770 as he traveled through. Oaks Alive combines the community’s appreciation for local business, heritage trees, Buda’s rich history and the charming downtown together with Earth Day and Arbor Day to celebrate Buda’s unique setting. For more information on the Buda Main Street Program or Oaks Alive, or to volunteer for the event, please contact the Buda Main Street Program Manager at 512.523.1075 or via email at [email protected]. City Park Construction Update Video - April 12, 2018 This week (April 8-14) is Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week! A big thanks Animal Control Officer Jennifer Hall for all that she does on a daily basis! THE BIG PICTURE Week of April 9, 2018 The Capital Area Metropolitan Organization (CAMPO) wants your input. CAMPO is hosting open houses for the 2019-2022 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and the Regional Arterials Study. CAMPO Open House Tuesday, April 17th 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Buda Public Library Meeting Room 303 Main St. 2019-2022 Transportation Improvement Program In December 2017 CAMPO issued a project call to its member governments and regional transportation partners to submit applications for transportation projects to be approved by CAMPO’s Transportation Policy Board (TPB.) These applications underwent a thorough scoring process, based on criteria approved by the TPB. The selected projects are now open for public review and comment prior to approval by the TPB on May 7, 2018. Out of the six projects submitted by the City of Buda, the four below are in the running for federal funding: FM 967 and Main St. Intersection Improvements The FM 967 and Main St Intersection Improvements will include widening of the existing roadway to provide dedicated left turn lanes, extend the length of the existing right turn lane, widen the sidewalks, provide signage and striping for enhanced pedestrian safety, reconstruct the existing diagonal parking, intersection enhancements to accommodate larger vehicles, and relocate traffic signal poles with signal modifications to accommodate the new pavement section and lane configuration. The intersection willbe treated with improved pedestrian crosswalks and enhanced pavement to contribute to the downtown character. Sidewalks will be constructed along the length of the project per the 2015 Downtown Master Plan. Overpass Rd/FM2001 Multi-Use Path This project will construct a 10’ wide multi-use path for pedestrian and bicycle traffic along the east side of FM 2001 to connect to existing sidewalks located along Overpass Rd and proposed sidewalks located along Old Goforth Rd. THE BIG PICTURE Week of April 9, 2018 FM 1626 AND FM 967 Study To further support local and regional travel, this project will study the intersection of FM 1626 and RM 967 to determine the improvements necessary to preserve capacity along the recently expanded FM 1626 corridor. This Study will help identify the intersection and other improvements needed to help realize the full capacity of the recent improvements to FM 1626 by removing a potential bottleneck along a regional arterial. Garlic Creek Parkway Study This study will look at the potential for making two new connections through undeveloped areas on the north side of the city. The first will be a north-south connection known as Garlic Creek Parkway (GCP) which would extend from RM 967 to the future extension of SH 45 W. The second will be an east-west connection known as the Garrison Road Connector (GRC) which would extend east from RM 967 to provide access to Garrison Road and potentially to the future extension of SH 45 W. Both have been identified as a transportation need for the City and Region through planning studies, including the Buda Transportation Master Plan and Hays County Transportation Plan. CAMPO is also developing a Regional Arterials Plan to provide mobility choices that are safe, convenient, reliable, and efficient. Arterials are roadways that connect to freeways, local streets and destinations. The plan will build on local planning efforts while having a regional focus. The public can learn more about this regional study and provide feedback through an online survey. You can also comment on the Regional Arterials Plan during any of the open houses. You can find the open house schedule at campotexas.org/calendar. All comments are due by Monday, April 30, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. THE BIG PICTURE Week of April 9, 2018 CITY COUNCIL SETS PUBLIC HEARINGS FOR PROPOSED SINGLE-MEMBER DISTRICTS BUDA, TX — In November of 2017, voters approved an amendment to the City Charter for the City of Buda to transition to single-member districts. Main Street Buda City Annex Building, 100 Houston Street BUDA, TX - March 28, 2018 - In the summer of 2018 City of Buda Employees will move into a new Municipal Building. Once the move is complete, our current city Hall, city Annex buildings, and library will be vacant. For the last several months, the Buda City Council has discussed what to do with the current city hall, city hall annex, and library once the new City Hall/Library complex opens this summer. All three facilities are located in downtown Buda within the Main Street District. After evaluating different options, the City of Buda will release a Request for Proposals (RFP) on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, to solicit ideas for reuse of the current city hall and city hall annex properties. A RFP will not be issued for the current library as the city is considering reusing this facility as staff offices for the Tourism and Main Street departments along with a space for community organizations to gather. About City Hall (121 S. Main Street) Originally built in 1992 and expanded in 2003, the approximately 6,391 square foot facility currently serves as the administration offices for the City of Buda.
