Nach dem im sub-saharischen verbreiteten Weltwissen gilt weithin: Das menschliche Leben ist eingebettet in eine spirituelle Welt, die sich als freundlich oder feindlich erweist. Sie wird beeinflusst durch Riten und Gebete, damit – das je eigene – Leben gelingen kann. Hexerei wird bekämpft, und Geister werden ausgetrieben, um Menschen vor Unheil und Krankheit zu schützen und sie aus den Klauen feindlicher Mächte zu retten. In der kirchlichen Partnerschaftsarbeit sorgen konträre Weltbilder und disparate Erfahrungen von Wirklichkeit für z.T. erhebliche Irritationen. Aufgrund von Migrationsbewegungen sind afrikanische Hexenvorstellungen seit einigen Jahren auch in Europa anzutreffen. Insofern ist die wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit dieser Problematik entwicklungspolitisch, gesellschaftlich und kirchlich relevant – nicht zuletzt auch als kritische Anfrage an den Westen nach der Existenz des Bösen. Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert deutsch- und englischsprachige Beiträge einer Konsultation der Missionsakademie zu „Hexenfurcht in Afrika – exotisch oder aktuell?“ aus dem Jahr 2014. -

Journal of Ethnobiology 2018 38(2): 261–275 Children’s Ethnobiological Notions of Contamination and Contagions among Maasai Agro-Pastoralists of Northern Tanzania Jennifer W. Roulette1*, Casey J. Roulette 2, Robert J. Quinlan1,3, Douglas R. Call3,4, Barry S. Hewlett1, Mark A. Caudell1,3, and Marsha B. Quinlan1,3 Abstract. Humans and other living organisms harbor disease-causing pathogenic microorganisms. These microorganisms are often transmitted through physical contact with contaminated objects, such as food, water, or other people. While some theoretical and empirical research examines the ontogeny of contamination and contagion beliefs, cross-cultural research on this topic is limited. To help remedy this paucity of data, we conducted an ethnobiological study of contagion and contamination beliefs among Maasai children (n = 42) in the Simanjiro district, Tanzania. Participants include 36 middle-aged schoolchildren and six four-year-olds. We contrast the children’s beliefs with those of 12 local adults. To measure children’s views of contagion and contamination, we developed sentence-framed yes/no elicitation tasks using three different stimuli—a fly, a cough, and a cough from someone with respiratory symptoms. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted to further understand children’s ethnotheories of contamination and contagion. Children generally reported that coughs and flies are directly contaminating, whereas they offered mixed results for associational and indirect contamination. Children discussed time, psychological contagion, saliva, wind, and the supernatural/natural as key elements to their beliefs, reasons, and personal actions taken to minimize contamination/contagion risk. We found education to be significantly positively correlated with children reporting that flies and coughs were directly contaminating, while age had no effect. -

To this day, watching television is connected with anxieties about the trivialization and banalization of society. At the same time, however, people appreciate it both as a source of information and entertainment. Television is therefore ‘both…and:’ entertainment and anxiety; distraction and allurement; compan- ionship and intrusion. When the role and position of television in culture is ambiguous, personal relations with, attitudes towards, and experiences of television are equally ambivalent, sometimes even contradictory, but the public and academic discourses on television tend to be partial. They focus on the negative impact of television consumption on the viewer, thereby neglecting whatever positive experiences one might associate with it. -

Fragile, Emergent, and Absent Tonics in Pop and Rock Songs * Mark Spicer NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: h'p://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.17.23..(mto.17.23.2.spicer.php 0E1WORDS: tonality, popular song, rock harmony, ragile tonics, emergent tonics, absent tonics, soul dominant, Sisyphus e3ect A4STRACT: This article explores the sometimes tricky 6uestion o tonality in pop and rock songs by positing three tonal scenarios: 1) songs with a fragile tonic, in which the tonic chord is present but its hierarchical status is weakened, either by relegating the tonic to a more unstable chord in 7rst or second inversion or by positioning the tonic mid-phrase rather than at structural points o departure or arrival8 .) songs with an emergent tonic, in which the tonic chord is initially absent yet deliberately saved or a triumphant arrival later in the song, usually at the onset o the chorus8 and 3) songs with an absent tonic, an extreme case in which the promised tonic chord never actually materiali9es. In each o these scenarios, the composer’s toying with tonality and listeners’ expectations may be considered hermeneutically as a means o enriching the song’s overall message. Close analyses o songs with ragile, emergent, and absent tonics are o3ered, drawing representative examples rom a wide range o styles and genres across the past 7 ty years o popular music, including 1960s Motown, 1970s soul, 1980s synthpop, 1990s alternative rock, and recent A.S. and A.0.
