Voll, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation uncovers some little-known stories that linked Britain, China, Egypt, France, Japan, and the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. They include the ways in which Chinese and Arab intellectuals regarded each other in response to the common challenge of western imperialism, how soybeans and their cultivation circulated from China to Egypt, the encounters of Arab and Chinese laborers working for the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI France, and the western missionary efforts to proselytize in Egypt and China. In narrating these stories, this project investigates the mediating role of western and Japanese powers in the intellectual, commercial, and interpersonal connections between Chinese and Arabic speaking societies during the high tide of global imperialism. Despite their great distance from each other, the Chinese and the Arabs occupied a similar position in the world order as colonized and semi-colonized peoples. As a result, in response to their comparable political and social situations, ideas, commodities, and people were transferred between them through transnational networks. Different modes of mediations—textual, material, and spatiotemporal—were involved in the processes of movements. This phenomenon of mediated mobility shows that the connections in an increasingly globalized modern world were not all about robust reticulation and iii accelerated interactions and exchanges. Rather, some of the linkages between non- western societies enmeshed in the scaffolding of global imperialism were attenuated and mediated by imperialism itself. For example, the trade of soybeans and the transfer of its cultivation know-how between China and Egypt were enabled by the British imperial interests. Furthermore, the meditation processes were dynamic and transformative with the mediator and the mediated being in constant state of flux. A person moving from Egypt to China can be both the product (the mediated) and the facilitator (the mediator) of western missionary efforts. Overall, these layers of mediations, as exemplified by each story, constitute the mechanisms of the entanglements of the world. The project is based on sources in Arabic, Chinese, and English, from multi-sited research in China, Egypt, Syria, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The various primary sources include travel writing, newspaper reports, diplomatic and customs records, agricultural journals, the records of missionary societies and of the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI. By examining Chinese-Arab connections, I try to show that the modern histories of the Middle East and East Asia are best understood not as separate scholarly domains in isolation from one another, but as inter-related fields with overlapping lines of inquiry. Therefore, this project weaves together what have been conventionally considered disparate historiographies of different regions and contribute to the growing field of world history. It is analytically useful to grasp the complexity and nuances of the intanglements of the world. It can also be applied to understand the cross-cultural interactions between other peoples and societies.1 The textual mediation in intellectual connections refers to a phenomenon that Chinese and Arab thinkers read a cluster of texts, including history books and newspaper reports, translated from European and Japanese languages, to acquire information about each other and formed imagined communities of fraternal equals. As a result of such intellectual encounters, ideas traveled from one periphery of the world to another periphery through networks of translations. Understandings of the “other” were formed along the way and appropriated for one’s own purposes. For example, in reading

    The Opposition of a Leading Akhund to Shi’a and Sufi Shaykhs in Mid-Nineteenth- Century China Wang Jianping, Shanghai Normal University Abstract This article traces the activities of Ma Dexin, a preeminent Hui Muslim scholar and grand imam (akhund) who played a leading role in the Muslim uprising in Yunnan (1856–1873). Ma harshly criticized Shi’ism and its followers, the shaykhs, in the Sufi orders in China. The intolerance of orthodox Sunnis toward Shi’ism can be explained in part by the marginalization of Hui Muslims in China and their attempts to unite and defend themselves in a society dominated by Han Chinese. An analysis of the Sunni opposition to Shi’ism that was led by Akhund Ma Dexin and the Shi’a sect’s influence among the Sufis in China help us understand the ways in which global debates in Islam were articulated on Chinese soil. Keywords: Ma Dexin, Shi’a, shaykh, Chinese Islam, Hui Muslims Most of the more than twenty-three million Muslims in China are Sunnis who follow Hanafi jurisprudence when applying Islamic law (shariʿa). Presently, only a very small percentage (less than 1 percent) of Chinese Muslims are Shi’a.1 The historian Raphael Israeli explicitly analyzes the profound impact of Persian Shi’ism on the Sufi orders in China based on the historical development and doctrinal teachings of Chinese Muslims (2002, 147–167). The question of Shi’a influence explored in this article concerns why Ma Dexin, a preeminent Chinese Muslim scholar, a great imam, and one of the key leaders of the Muslim uprising in the nineteenth century, so harshly criticized Shi’ism and its accomplices, the shaykhs, in certain Sufi orders in China, even though Shi’a Islam was nearly invisible at that time.

    ORIENTAL ARCHIVE 80, 2012 • 259 An Islamic Perspective in Russian Public Opinion: The Russian Tatar Thinker Abdurrashid Ibrahim (1857–1944) Mikhail Meyer An entirely new dimension entered into the realm of public opinion in Russia at the turn of the twentieth century with the appearance of Muslim thinkers in the domain of social and religious activity. Their words and actions were primarily aimed at modernizing the economic, social and spiritual life of their coreligionists. But at the same time, they strove to improve the social and legal status of the Muslim (mostly Turkic-speaking) population in Russia. In this regard, their activities represented a special variant of Islamic-Russian nationalism. This type of concept, i.e. Islam within a national movement, had been mobilized among Asian and North African Muslims since the second half of the nineteenth century. The Young Ottomans in the Turkish Empire and the Arab participants of the Nahda (Enlightenment movement) are different examples of this religious- nationalist combination as well as the Adamiyat Society established by Malkom- khan in Iran and activities of the first Muslim organizations in India and in other countries of South-East Asia. In Russia, the Jadid movement was one of the notable results of such activity.1 However, Jadidism was not a uniform movement and the first Muslim reformers belonging to Jadidism had different ways of expressing associated ideas. If Shihabuddin Merjani (1818–89) and Hussein Faizkhanov (1823–66) were characterised by their interest in reorganizing cultural life, on the other hand, Ismail-bey Gaspıralı (Gasprinsky, 1851–1914) especially related reforms in the sphere of education with the idea of unity for Russian Muslims in addition to the improvement of their social status.

From laws like the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act to the extensive, racially targeted immigration rhetoric of the twenty-first century, dominant discourses in the United States have legally and rhetorically defined Asian and Latina/o Americans as alien to the imagined nation. However, these groups have histories within the United States that stretch back more than four hundred years and complicate foundational narratives like the immigrant “melting pot,” the black/white binary, and American exceptionalism.
