O verbo dissociar remete à cisão ou desagregação, termos esses que no campo da saúde mental estão associados à doença e à patologia, dificilmente à saúde. O objetivo desse trabalho foi mostrar como a concepção de dissociação foi construída socialmente a partir de mecanismos da mente (a associação e a desagregação de seus elementos) que se mantiveram como denominadores comuns ao longo da história da saúde mental por meio de práticas como o xamanismo, exorcismo, magnetismo animal e a hipnose. Finalmente, ao final do século XIX e início do século XX, a medicina e a nascente psicologia valeram- se da dissociação para estudarem fenômenos como as múltiplas personalidades, a histeria e mesmo a experiência religiosa, de maneira tal que diversos investigadores pioneiros como William James, Pierre Janet, Alfred Binet, Frederic Myers, Morton Prince e outros, integraram muitos (ou todos) desses princípios em suas próprias propostas teóricas e influenciaram toda a psicologia, ao conceituarem que a mente se dividia em consciente ou inconsciente, bem como apresentava múltiplos níveis e compartimentos que podiam ser tanto cindidos e desagregados como unidos e conectados. O método utilizado na investigação foi a revisão bibliográfica e a análise foi realizada a partir da ótica crítica da psicologia social. Essa tradição de pensamento psicológico cuja base é dissociativa (enquanto processo) e hipnótica (enquanto instrumento) foi obnubilada ao longo do século XX com o surgimento de novas propostas, como o behaviorismo e a psicanálise, e, também, com a patologização à qual o fenômeno dissociativo foi exposto ao longo do século XX. O presente trabalho concluiu que o estudo da dissociação é relevante para a psicologia tanto em seus aspectos históricos como atuais, por se tratar de um fenômeno psicológico presente em diversas teorias, normal em si, mas que pode adquirir conotação saudável ou patológica dependendo do contexto a partir do qual é avaliado. Por fim, concluiu também que a hipnose pode ser um valioso instrumento clínico que merece ser reintegrado à psicologia. Dissociate refers to splitting or disintegrating, terms that in the field of mental health usually refer to disease and pathology, hardly to health. The objective of this work was to show how the conception of dissociation was socially constructed through mechanisms of the mind (the association and the disintegration of its elements) that have remained common denominators throughout the history of mental health through practices such as shamanism, exorcism, animal magnetism and hypnosis. Finally, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, medicine and newborn psychology drew on dissociation to study phenomena such as multiple personalities, hysteria, and even religious experience, so that pioneering scholars such as William James, Pierre Janet, Alfred Binet, Frederic Myers, Morton Prince and others, integrated many (or all) of these principles into their own theoretical proposals and influenced all psychology by conceptualizing that the mind was divided into conscious or unconscious, levels and compartments that could be both spun-off and disaggregated as united and connected. The method used in the research was the bibliographical review and the analysis was carried out from the critical perspective of social psychology. This tradition of psychological thinking, whose basis is dissociative (as a process) and hypnotic (as an instrument) was obnubilated throughout the twentieth century with the emergence of new proposals, such as behaviorism and psychoanalysis, and also with the pathologization to which the dissociative phenomenon was exposed throughout the 20th century. The present study concluded that the study of dissociation is relevant for psychology in both its historical and current aspects, since it is a psychological phenomenon present in several theories, normal in itself, but which can acquire a healthy or pathological connotation depending on the context from which it is evaluated. Finally, he concluded that hypnosis can be a valuable clinical tool that deserves to be reintegrated into psychology. BY MORTON PRINCE, M.D. Physician for Nervous Diseases, Boston City Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. What I propose to tell in this paper is the way in which the different personalities of Miss Beauchamp became developed, and the relation which they bear to each other and the true self. From a great mass of phenomena manifested by this case 2 (aboulia, negative hallucination, crystal visions, co-existent conscious states, automatic writing, etc., etc.) I have selected these two points as being, it seems to me, the most important involved in its psychology.3 Miss Beauchamp is a person with several personalities. She has at least three, besides three hypnotic states, and during the past two or three years these three persons have been coming and going apparently without any law or order. First one and then the other has been bobbing in and bobbing out, while each one of them claims to be the real Miss Beauchamp, and to have the sole right to existence to the exclusion of the others. Each has objected to the habits and doings of the others and to their being allowed to stay and to any consideration being shown them. It has not been easy to determine which of two personalities at least, if either, is the real self. Cases of multiple personality are not very uncommon, but, so far as I know, no attempt has been made to determine the relation which the different personalities bear to each other.

University of Alberta ABSTRACT: Recent articles have addressed the question of whether or not the out-of-body experience reported by many people near death is a form of disso ciative behavior. If so, is it related to other mental or emotional pathologies or is it a normal protective response to stress? This paper explores the history of dissociation and related terms, uncovering a multiplicity of uses and connota tions. New orientations in physics and the rise of the New Science in the form of Chaos Theory allow a plethora of additional interpretations. The out-of-body experience (OBE) is one of the most dramatic and memorable features of the near-death experience (NDE). That it has been reported by individuals not near death, during a variety of al tered, traumatic, or volitional states, makes it special amongst other NDE phenomena. Glen Gabbard and Stuart Twemlow (1986) dis cussed the OBE as an altered mind/body state that is spatial rather than temporal, which is characteristic of dissociative states. This im plies a qualitative difference between the OBE and dissociation. Yet the Winter 1993 issue of this Journal contained two article that fur ther confused the issue of the appropriate definition and use of the term dissociation. Authors William Serdahely (1993) and Harvey Irwin (1993) pre sented different theoretical constructs to explain dissociation. Serda hely wrote: Marlene Spencer is a Ph.D. candidate in Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Her dissertation explores the experiences of people who are near death.

If we are to judge the soundness of the theory on which this mode of treatment is based, the field of its usefulness, its limitations, and the methods of its application, it is abso- lutely necessary that we should begin any discussion of psychotherapy, in a symposium of this kind, with an under- standing of its underlying principles. There are certain facts of observation with which we may begin. I. It will be agreed that common experience has shown that certain unhealthy habitual states of mind are apt to be accompanied by various derangements of the functions of the body. F RECENT years, and particularly as a result of the ex- perience in this war, there has developed amongst French neurologists, under the teachings of Babinski, a reaction O against the classical conception of hysteria of Charcot and his school. This present tendency, or rather the present concept which is in vogue, is to regard the classical symptoms such as paralysis, an- aesthesias, convulsive seizures, etc., as artificially manufactured by the physician or the environment through the influence of suggestion and not as essential manifestations. In this view these manufactured symptoms are identified with hysteria and consequently hysteria be- comes nothing more nor less than a group of suggested symptoms. It is claimed, that under the influence of this point of view and clinical method of approach, hysterical manifestations are much less common than formerly in neurological wards, and that during the long con- tinued neurological experience of this war this particular kind of war psychosis, or so-called shell shock, was finally largely controlled and diminished in frequency. I think, also, it is true that this conception of hysteria towards the end of the war largely permeated English thought and dominated the point of view of English neurologists who were engaged in the treatment of war psychoses. This reaction, as I have said, has been due to the teachings of Babinski, who for many years has insisted that hysteria is nothing but the product of suggestion, and therefore an artificial psychosis. I propose to examine Babinski's thesis and the evidence upon which he relies for his inductions.

    THE FOUNDING OF THE APPA The American PsychoPathological Association 100th Annual Meeting, March 4-6, 2010 The Idea Proposal for an American Psychopathological Society Sometime around 1900, William James wrote a call for an “American Psychopathological Society.” The original document in James’ handwriting is undated, except for a reference in the text to statistics of the mentally ill for 1899. William James, 1842-1910 James recognized that in the preceding 20 years a great gap had arisen between normal psychology and the so-called morbid sciences, which dealt exclusively with full-blown insanity. What was needed now, James said, was an intermediate psychology to deal with the borderline regions of personality. Recent research into functional disturbances had thrown unexpected light on the constitution of our nature.
