Message from the President For the first time in the 70 years of the Pepperdine Bible Lectures, we will be focusing on the book of Revelation—a book which provides a final exclamation point in scripture, filled with both puzzling images and inspiring poems of praise.

For many of us, John’s Apocalypse is unfamiliar. Sometimes we’ve kept our distance because of its strange symbolism; at other times, we’ve steered clear because of the way it has been commandeered by popular, sensational theology.

But despite the unfamiliar images and misguided attempts to tame the book, I’m convinced that we need to hear again John’s vital voice as we seek to be God’s faithful witnesses in the 21st century.

Our world is very different in some ways from the one John knew. But in other ways, our issues are similar: Do we ever feel like we’re serving a losing cause? Does it ever seem like our faithful service doesn’t matter? We need to hear John reminding us that God—not Satan, not the beasts, certainly not the empire—is in control.

The annual Bible Lectures are a highlight of the year here at Pepperdine. We’re so thankful that this beautiful campus which has been entrusted to us by God can be the setting for these times of study, worship, and renewal.

This year we welcome Mike Cope as director of ministry outreach and the Pepperdine Bible Lectures. A well-known minister, author, lecturer, and blogger, Mike is a worthy guide in his new role as we anticipate this time together, gaining greater insight and understanding of God’s word.

We—along with hundreds of speakers, teachers, and worship leaders who’ve been preparing for months—look forward to seeing you this spring. Please come join us in Malibu, April 30 - May 3!

1 70th Annual Pepperdine Bible Lectures Message from CAN I GET A WITNESS ? Mike Cope Faithfully Following the Lamb in Do you remember the first time you watched The Wizard of Oz? As Dorothy and her friends REVELATION pressed toward the Emerald City, you could only imagine how terrible and mighty the wizard was. When they finally arrived, the brave troop trembled in the presence of his disembodied voice. TABLE OF CONTENTS Then everything changed in a moment. Dorothy’s dog, Toto, pulled back the curtain, unveiling “the great and powerful Oz” as an insecure little man. Featured Speakers 3-6 John’s Apocalypse—his “unveiling”—makes a similar move. For Christians Special Programs 7-13 tempted to compromise or to give up in a world dominated by Rome, he exposes the power behind the empire. Satan, the power behind the power, seems like one Inside Pepperdine 14-21 with no equal. But when we catch a glimpse of John’s unveiling, we realize that Satan has already been defeated by the lamb who was slain.

Program Participants 22-31 What a needed message for us, too—for believers who are tempted to throw in the towel out of futility or to fight back with the world’s tactics. Program Index 32 A study of Revelation is full of challenges, not least of which is its terrifying Schedule & Information 33-48 and puzzling images: a multi-headed red dragon who plots war; two insomnia- inducing, blasphemous beasts; and then a “great prostitute” who is drunk from overindulging on the blood of the saints. There’s also the challenge of various Registration Form 49-50 interpretations of the book—some bizarre, and a few delusional. G. K. Chesterton put it well: “Though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature as wild as one of his own commentators.”

But let us not despair! This “joker in the deck of biblical texts” has so much to FOLLOW US offer us as we seek to be faithful witnesses of the one John calls the faithful and true witness, the one who laid down his life for the world.

twitter.com/biblelectures Please come join us April 30-May 3 as we center our hopes again on the throne of God and on the lamb who is among us. Let’s gather to celebrate the victory of twitter.com/runmichael Christ, to reconnect to beloved brothers and sisters, to anticipate God’s new world, #pbl2013 to worship the one “who was, and is, and is to come,” and to envision again entering our communities as those who “follow the lamb wherever he goes” (14:4).

facebook.com/biblelectures This is my first conference to lead, following the amazing 30 years with Jerry Rushford as director. I look forward to having John—whom Eugene Peterson described as “God-intoxicated, God-possessed, God-articulate”—guide us. COMING SOON!

13 Saint John’sBy Sarah Fisher Bible Described by Smithsonian magazine as one of the most extraordinary undertakings of our time, the Saint John’s Bible—the first handwritten, illuminated Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey in 500 years—is a throwback to a tradition that has largely disappeared in the west: art created primarily as religious worship. It was a tradition responsible for colorfully designed stained glass windows, Michelangelo’s celebrated paintings in the Sistine Chapel, and intricately illuminated manuscripts of scripture.

Handwritten, illuminated Bibles were mostly discontinued from this tradition after the invention of the printing press in the mid-1400s, due to the length and cost of creating such works. So when Mark Roosa, dean of Pepperdine Libraries, learned that the restorative Saint John’s Bible project included 360 handwritten “Heritage Edition” copies of the new, original manuscript, he immediately set about trying to secure one for Pepperdine’s collection.

14 pepperdine.edu/biblelectures pepperdine.edu/biblelectures excerpt from Greg Stevenson’s A Slaughtered Lamb: Revelation is a dangerous book. Its heavy use of symbolism, controversial imagery, and foreign genre (apocalyptic) create a combustible mixture that often explodes into misinterpretation and abuse. Historically, Revelation has played a role in the perpetuation of violence, the justification of warfare and genocide, the stoking of vengeful fantasies, and the creation of a militant and arrogant perversion of Christianity that trades in self-glorification.

Such irresponsible interpretations of the book are indeed dangerous, yet we should not therefore deceive ourselves into thinking that more responsible interpretations carry any less of an edge. Sensing that the Bible Lectures had an opportunity to serve the church in greater ways, Sara Young Jackson, vice chancellor at Pepperdine, offered to partner with the Church Relations team to build resources to introduce new programs. We are thrilled to team up with Sara.

As a result of her effort, the Pepperdine Bible Lectures has been strengthened this year by the generous support of two donor families. In addition, we’ve been blessed by a generous gift from a church.

Together, these donors have made it possible for our keynote speakers to gather in fellowship, prayer and study. They have created a scholarship for ministers and missionaries to attend the lectures. They have supported a new effort to provide video recordings of lectures and presentations free of charge. They have supported new workshops and conferences that will be held throughout the year.

Through their generosity Pepperdine Bible Lectures will reach more people than ever through live streaming technologies. Their investment has made it possible for Pepperdine to host an annual leadership series prior to Bible Lectures.

Pepperdine gratefully acknowledges the substantial financial gifts made by

Pepperdine Regent Danny Phillips and his wife, Carol, and Renaud and Marina De Plantas.

We also wish to thank the Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland, Texas for sponsoring and hosting the Keynote Speakers Bible study and retreat.

The Pepperdine Bible Lectures is moving forward into new territory thanks to these men and women who are dedicated to the idea that this program can be a source of new strength and energy to the church.

TO THE SEVEN CHURCHES IN THE PROVINCE OF ASIA Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

“Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.” So shall it be! Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

REVELATION 1:4-8
