How the Experience of Cyberspace Contributes to the Emerging Story of Self in Young People
Morph Constructing identity: how the experience of cyberspace contributes to the emerging story of self in young people. Jill Lesley Clough Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature Language, and Linguistics Newcastle University April 2013 Awarded October 2013 Supervisors: Professor Linda Anderson, Professor Jackie Kay Abstract for Morph. Constructing identity: how the experience of cyberspace contributes to the emerging story of self in young people. This thesis develops from the belief that young people construct identities for themselves which inevitably surprise their parents, particularly where so much of their coming-of-age is influenced by hidden virtual experiences. The novel which explores this is Morph. Joey, the protagonist, is uneasy about her gender. She has a loving family, intelligence, a satisfying way of life, but loathes her body. She investigates alternative futures, initially online. Her closest friend also has a secret, revealed after a suicide attempt that Joey averts: sexual abuse by her father. Each has to discover how to live with the evolving sense of self. If Joey wishes to change gender her character may alter, too; she finds she can be violent when confronting the abusive father. The story is told through Joey’s eyes and activities in cyberspace, which she thinks of as a free place, parallel to the mountains over which she loves to run. She feels at ease in both places. Eventually she decides to live as both male and female (Other) because she does not have a ‘condition’ needing to be cured. Classification in the natural world allows for infinite variety, and she want similar opportunities for herself. -

Bfi and Aardman Animations Launch Partnership to Develop New Animation Feature Films
BFI AND AARDMAN ANIMATIONS LAUNCH PARTNERSHIP TO DEVELOP NEW ANIMATION FEATURE FILMS The BFI Aardman Animation Development Lab to support animated feature film projects BFI Aardman Animation Development Lab to offer support and professional, hands-on experience to emerging talent with a passion for creating animated family films LONDON – Friday 3 October 2014. The BFI is partnering with Aardman Animations, a world leader in stop-frame and CGI animated filmmaking and creators of Wallace & Gromit and Shaun The Sheep, in launching a new scheme today backed by £1 million of Lottery funding to help support the development and production of new animated feature films and the creative talent making them. The BFI will provide funding for up to two years, to three filmmakers or filmmaker teams (writers, directors, producers) to develop their projects with dedicated development support through The BFI Aardman Animation Development Lab. The process for developing animated feature films is lengthy and expensive limiting the opportunities for British filmmakers. Aardman will work with the filmmakers – animators, writers, directors, producers – to shape their ideas with the aim of emerging with a set of ‘greenlight’ materials for their films, ready to advance to production. The closing date for applications is Friday 28 November 2014. Ben Roberts, Director of the BFI Film Fund says, "The beauty of animated features lies in their ability to combine great artistry with commercial ambition. This all comes at a cost, and so the development opportunities are limited. Tapping into that Aardman brain to work in depth on a small number of carefully chosen projects from promising filmmakers, is a great opportunity for us to move some exciting and commercially appealing work closer to a reality." Peter Lord, Co-founder of Aardman Animations says, "Feature animation is the ideal medium for filmmakers. -

Wallace & Gromit
WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT Programme Notes If Nick Park and co. at Aardman gradually established themselves as a sort of millennial plasticine Ealing, then surely ‘Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’ is their diversion into Hammer horror territory. Aardman’s plunge into the daunting world of feature-length production had begun with ‘Chicken Run’ (2000), which set something of a precedent with its own co-opting of a broad, recognisable genre, on this occasion the wartime prison break drama, and the much-loved Wallace & Gromit followed suit with a good old-fashioned monster spooker. Ok, it tones down its terrors in favour of good old English standbys like garden fêtes, marrow-growing contests, and aerial dogfights, yet this in itself all shows a keen awareness of the frequently clichéd vision of Britain depicted in our genre fare, with emphasis often placed on class-system clashes (compare the respective foxhunter sequences in ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, ‘The Tomb of Ligeia’, ‘The Plague of the Zombies’ and ‘The Final Conflict’, for example – our ‘proper’ horror films straying every bit as far from their fear focus and using traditional imagery to offer comment on wider issues). We probably have as many fictional ‘national treasures’ as we do real ones – for every Florence Nightingale or Mo Farah, say, there’s a ‘James Bond’ or ‘Sherlock Holmes’. An instant hit as soon as ‘A Grand Day Out’ took to the screens in 1989, both Wallace and Gromit leapt on to everyone’s list of praiseworthy favourites, consolidating their success with ‘The Wrong Trousers’ (1993), perhaps their defining half-hour, and ‘A Close Shave’ (1995). -

Managing Creativity in a Successful Company – Aardman Animations
<CN>Chapter 14:</CN> <CT>‘It’s Our Property and Our Passion’: Managing Creativity in a Successful Company – Aardman Animations <AU>Andrew Spicer <NP>It has become a cultural and commercial necessity for media firms to promote themselves as dynamic and innovative ‘creative companies’ and therefore attractive to potential employees, associated companies or funders. Although the concept of creativity has been extensively discussed, as Philip Schlesinger argued a decade ago in his critique of the ‘doctrine’ of creativity, the central question for critical empirical research is ‘in what form ideas about creativity and innovation become organizationally embedded and to what extent they shape the actual management of creative practice […] how ideas about creativity are actually interpreted in the practice of production’ (2007: 387, original emphasis). A central problem, which Mark Banks argues ‘is the distinctive feature of cultural production’, is the tension between the rational, accumulative and standardising logic of capitalist production and the irrational, unruly, unpredictable and potentially disruptive demands of the creative worker who values her autonomy (2007: 30, original emphasis). Although creativity and commerce are often polarized, in modern media firms they are always ‘intermingled and interfused’ in an unstable and shifting interplay that evolves over time (Negus and Pickering 2004: 46–67). <TEXT>This chapter develops an extended analysis of the management of creative practice in one of the most successful UK film and television companies, Aardman Animations, which has evolved from a hand-to-mouth two-person operation in 1976 to a medium-sized firm with a £22.3 million turnover in 2014 and over 150 employees, a number that rises to more than 600 when two films are being produced simultaneously (Baker 2014). -
