  • How the Experience of Cyberspace Contributes to the Emerging Story of Self in Young People
Morph Constructing identity: how the experience of cyberspace contributes to the emerging story of self in young people. Jill Lesley Clough Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature Language, and Linguistics Newcastle University April 2013 Awarded October 2013 Supervisors: Professor Linda Anderson, Professor Jackie Kay Abstract for Morph. Constructing identity: how the experience of cyberspace contributes to the emerging story of self in young people. This thesis develops from the belief that young people construct identities for themselves which inevitably surprise their parents, particularly where so much of their coming-of-age is influenced by hidden virtual experiences. The novel which explores this is Morph. Joey, the protagonist, is uneasy about her gender. She has a loving family, intelligence, a satisfying way of life, but loathes her body. She investigates alternative futures, initially online. Her closest friend also has a secret, revealed after a suicide attempt that Joey averts: sexual abuse by her father. Each has to discover how to live with the evolving sense of self. If Joey wishes to change gender her character may alter, too; she finds she can be violent when confronting the abusive father. The story is told through Joey’s eyes and activities in cyberspace, which she thinks of as a free place, parallel to the mountains over which she loves to run. She feels at ease in both places. Eventually she decides to live as both male and female (Other) because she does not have a ‘condition’ needing to be cured. Classification in the natural world allows for infinite variety, and she want similar opportunities for herself.

  • Future of Public Service Media: Open University Response Summary
Ofcom – Future of Public Service Media: Open University Response Summary 1. Education is a crucial part of the Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) requirements. Several of the statutory requirements set out in Section 264 of the Communications Act 2003 relate to educational objectives. There are opportunities to strengthen these requirements as part of the new Public Service Media (PSM) offer. 2. The Open University (OU) plays a key role in supporting the delivery of PSB requirements around education through its partnership with the BBC. The partnership co-produces high-quality factual content across several channels and platforms, which is developed in collaboration with academic experts and closely linked to related educational materials hosted by the OU. A key objective of the partnership is to encourage people to embark on learning journeys from the informal, factual content produced with the BBC, through online and printed educational resources which enhance and enrich their broadcast/digital experience, to taking up formal learning opportunites inspired by watching, listening to and engaging with the content produced as part of the partnership. 3. In 2019/20: • A total of 257 hours of content produced via the OU/BBC partnership was broadcast by the BBC. • This resulted in a combined total of 308 million viewing/listening “events” and digital engagement interactions. • The three most popular television programmes broadcast – A Perfect Planet, Springwatch and Hospital (Series 5) all saw viewing figures in excess of 22 million. • There were 765,000 unique visitors to the online educational content related to the OU/BBC partnership hosted on the OU’s free online learning platform, OpenLearn.

A specific beech tree was chosen (see map) we installed a low level structure beneath the canopy designed to make contact with the falling beechnuts and emit musical sound across an octave. All the sounds were recorded to capture the soundtrack of the tree and this data was used in a new classical composition premiered at St George’s Bristol in November. During hours of darkness, the installation and the tree was lit with red and green wash lighting. A solar-powered generator was positioned close to the site to provide environmentally-friendly electricity supply. Over the period of the installation, people were able to hear the sounds of the tree. An education project was planned to run alongside the installation to provide information about the tree and the role and importance of trees in the urban environment.
