These Indians, he reported, were Senecas, Onondagas, and others of the Five Iroquois villages. At their urgent request, Celoron permitted some residents of Detroit to carry goods thither, and had recently sent Sicur Navarre to the post, to make a report thereupon. Navarre's account was trans­ nUtted to Quebec with this letter. Celoron's letter has been printed in the New York Colonial Doc1tments, but the accompanying report of Sieur Navarre has not heretofore been published.     Cutting patterns in D.W. Griffith’s Biographs: An experimental statistical study Mike Baxter, 16 Lady Bay Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5BJ, U.K. (e-mail: [email protected]) 1 Introduction A number of recent studies have examined statistical methods for investigating cutting patterns within films, for the purposes of comparing patterns across films and/or for summarising ‘average’ patterns in a body of films. The present paper investigates how different ideas that have been proposed might be combined to identify subsets of similarly constructed films (i.e. exhibiting comparable cutting structures) within a larger body. The ideas explored are illustrated using a sample of 62 D.W Griffith Biograph one-reelers from the years 1909–1913. Yuri Tsivian has suggested that ‘all films are different as far as their SL struc- tures; yet some are less different than others’. Barry Salt, with specific reference to the question of whether or not Griffith’s Biographs ‘have the same large scale variations in their shot lengths along the length of the film’ says the ‘answer to this is quite clearly, no’. This judgment is based on smooths of the data using seventh degree trendlines and the observation that these ‘are nearly all quite different one from another, and too varied to allow any grouping that could be matched against, say, genre’1. While the basis for Salt’s view is clear Tsivian’s apparently oppos- ing position that some films are ‘less different than others’ seems to me to be a reasonably incontestable sentiment. It depends on how much you are prepared to simplify structure by smoothing in order to effect comparisons.

    Huron-Wendat Archaeological Heritage: Challenging the Professionals [Slide 1] Alicia L. Hawkins, Laurentian University Louis Lesage, Huron-Wendat Nation Introduction Kwe - we would like to begin by recognizing that we are welcomed on present-day Mohawk territory. This location is a strategic place that has been traditionally used by many First Nations including the Haudenosaunee, the Huron-Wendat, and the "St. Lawrence Iroquoians" whose definition and relationship with the Huron-Wendat will be discussed more in this paper. When asked if we would participate in this session, we believed it was because the organizers hoped we would be able to speak about a collaborative archaeological project involving academic researchers and the Huron-Wendat Nation, particularly with respect to Ontario archaeology. In the last decade, a great deal of progress has been made towards collaboration, but at this time we would consider most, if not all, Ontario archaeological research projects to be consultative rather than collaborative. By this, we mean that the Huron-Wendat Nation has been informed of projects, often at the outset, and asked to provide feedback; and in some cases changes may have been made. However, the people conducting the research and the research questions originate outside of the Huron-Wendat Nation and are not necessarily of specific interest to the Huron-Wendat.1 [Slide 2]An exception to this, and one that suggests a way forward, is a jointly organized conference held last year to mark the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s sojourn in Ontario. Given that Champlain spent most of his time in Huronia, with Huron-Wendat people, it was essential that the Huron-Wendat past was a focus of this conference.

    van Binsbergen, Wim M.J., 2020, The leg child in global cultural history: A distributional exercise in comparative mythology, at: http://www.quest- journal.net/shikanda/topicalities/leg_child,pdf In this paper we shall address an interessting and wide-spread mytheme that nonetheless is little known outside the circle of comparative mythologists: the leg child. In comparative mythology, the leg child is a mythical anthropomorphic figure born from a human body otherwise than via the normal birth channel; cf . van Binsbergen 2018: 417, where I wrote approximately (text considerably adapted): .... the mytheme of the leg child (NarCom 12b). This is a common motif, indicating a mythical figure who was born, not by passing through the normal birth channel, but through a thigh, armpit, waist, occiput or any other part of the human body except the birth channel. The type case is from Ancient Greek mythology, where Dionysus was sewn into his father Zeus's thigh, and born from there, after his mother Semele had been burned to death under the hot splendour of Zeus' lightning.(...) Quite a few mythical protagonists worldwide appear as leg children, including Ancient Egyptian Seth born from his mother's side, Thoth from his father's skull (Bonnet 1952: 702 f.), cf. Greek Athena from her father's skull (and when Hephaestus – who incidentally, as a smith was the very one to split Zeus’s skull on that occasion – in sexual arousal ejaculated against Athena's thigh who in disgust wiped off the sperm with a handful of wool and cast it to the Earth, who immediately responded by producing Erichthonius [ – by an ancient popular etymology, ‘Wool-Earthy’ – , ] this makes the latter also a leg child although he was reputedly borne by Gaia / Earth).

    322- A New Jersey Haven for Some Acculturated Lenape of Pennsylvania During the Indian Wars of the 1760s Marshall Joseph Becker West Chester University INTRODUCTION Accounts of Indian depredations are as old as the colonization of the New World, but examples of concerted assistance to Native Americans are few. Particu- larly uncommon are cases in which whites extended aid to Native Americans dur- ing periods when violent conflicts were ongoing and threatening large areas of the moving frontier. Two important examples of help being extended by the citizens of Pennsyl- vania and NewJersey to Native Americans of varied backgrounds who were fleeing from the trouble-wracked Pennsylvania colony took place during the period of the bitter Indian wars of the 1760s. The less successful example, the thwarted flight of the Moravian converts from the Forks of Delaware in Pennsylvania and their attempted passage through New Jersey, is summarized here in the appendices. The second and more successful case involved a little known cohort of Lenape from Chester County, Pennsylvania. These people had separated from their native kin by the 1730s and taken up permanent residence among colonial farmers. Dur- ing the time of turmoil for Pennsylvanians of Indian origin in the 1760s, this group of Lenape lived for seven years among the citizens of NewJersey. These cases shed light on the process of acculturation of Native American peoples in the colonies and also on the degree to which officials of the Jersey colony created a relatively secure environment for all the people of this area. They also provide insights into differences among various Native American groups as well as between traditionalists and acculturated members of the same group.' ANTI-NATIVE SENTIMENT IN THE 1760S The common English name for the Seven Years War (1755-1763), the "French and Indian War," reflects the ethnic alignments and generalized prejudices reflected in the New World manifestations of this conflict.

The PARCC Readiness courses on this page are for students who need a head start preparing for the course and the PARCC assessment (new N.J. Department of Education required assessment). The PARCC Readiness courses are free of charge. Also, the summer 2015 program includes courses for any student getting ready for the SAT’s, and those who want help writing their college application essay. The schedule below illustrates dates and times for each program. PARCC / Writing Readiness PARCC Writing Readiness is an intensive two-week course that combines the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, writing expectations on standardized tests, including PARCC and the SAT, and recognized good practice regarding style and organization of student writing. By the end of the two weeks, students will produce at least one polished piece of writing. Locations: Lenape for all Lenape District Students Time: 8:30 am – 12:15 pm Dates: Monday through Thursday, July 6 - 16 Tuition: Free Transportation Available PARCC / Algebra 1 Readiness PARCC Algebra 1 Readiness is a four-week program designed to review math skills and topics required for Algebra. Locations: Lenape for all Lenape District Students Time: 8:30 am – 12:15 pm Dates: Mondays through Thursdays, July 6 through July 30 Tuition: Free Transportation Available PARCC / Algebra 2 Readiness Any LRHSD student who is registered for Algebra 2 or Introduction to Algebra 2 is invited to this four-week program designed to review and build upon Algebra 1 skills.
