Name Index to Photograph Collection
Name Index to Photograph Collection What follows is a name index only to the Finnish American Historical Archives' Historic Photograph Collection (Old Topical File). See Archival Finding Aids for a complete listing of this collection. When more than one surname was indicated concerning one photo, the entry with the first surname lists all of the individuals, while each additional surname is also listed individually. The metadata concerning each photograph is limited to whatever information is available on the object, often revealing limitations to the information about each object (for example, a mounted card photo that simply states "Mrs. Maki," or an group photo that only includes surnames). Another limitation is the legibility and clarity of the handwriting. This name index was created by Larissa Poyhonen in the summer of 2010, while performing preservation work on this collection. Megan Ott transcribed the Knights of Kaleva Convention Photograph in November, 2010. The index was edited and prepared for the Internet by Kent Randell. This index also includes the Knights of Kaleva Convention Photograph, August, 1910 The index also includes the pictures included in the book Tervehdys Suomelle, published in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1920. White Paper 1 Miss Universe 2015 and Feminism Beauty Pageants Can
White Paper 1 Miss Universe 2015 and Feminism Beauty pageants can trace their origins to ancient Greece, but pageants have taken place in the United States only since the early nineteenth century (Minorcon). From the beginning, countless amounts of people watch in awe as these women perform and shine on stage. Nonetheless, many have begun to question beauty pageants; this is especially prevalent in recent years with the amount of supporters for the feminist movement rapidly increasing. In January of 2015, the Miss Universe pageant was held at Florida International University, a four-year public research institution in Miami. This event generated many complaints and concerns of numerous students and faculty. A good number of people were concerned that FIU hosting the Miss Universe pageant was more detrimental than beneficial. In particular, some were worried about the serious issues that the pageant’s contestants like these face both physically and mentally. Moreover, there was the underlying issue of the objectification of women and further reinforcing traditional gender roles. The act of bringing the Miss Universe pageant to Florida International University stands in opposition to the goals espoused by the contemporary feminist movement. “The first truly modern beauty contest, involving the display of women's faces and figures before judges, can be traced to one of America's greatest showmen, Phineas T. Barnum (of circus fame)” ("People & Events: Origins of the Beauty Pageant"). Barnum’s beauty contest mandated that in order to participate one must submit a photograph of the contestant. Afterward, the photographs submitted would be displayed in his museum where citizens would vote for their favorite. -
MEDIA TRANSLATION in BBCMUNDO INTERNET TEXTS 105 06 Valdeón.Pmd
MEDIA TRANSLATION IN BBCMUNDO INTERNET TEXTS Roberto A. Valdeón Universidad de Oviedo ABSTRACT In recent years, several authors have underlined the need to enforce a critical approach to translation studies in order to explore ideologies in both source and target languages and cultures (Hermans; Olk). In this article we shall study BBCMundo’s news web texts and their source English BBCWorld reports from a critical approach. The paper is divided into two sections. Firstly, we analyse two series of news texts. We shall discuss the use of head- lines in the STs and TTs, and proceed to study the strategies used in the main bodies of the reports, notably omissions, additions and permutations. In a final section, we shall carry out the discussion about the ideological implications of the translational strategies identi- fied in the previous sections. KEY WORDS: Editorial routines, translation strategies, critical approach, news discourse. -

O-540-14 TRADE MARKS ACT 1994 IN THE MATTER OF APPLICATION NO 2652922 BY TOURISM WORLD LIMITED TO REGISTER THE TRADE MARK IN CLASS 41 AND IN THE MATTER OF OPPOSITION THERETO UNDER NO 400459 BY MISS WORLD LIMITED Background and pleadings 1) On 14 February 2013, Tourism World Limited (“the applicant”) applied to register the mark shown on the front page of this decision. It was accepted and published in the Trade Marks Journal on 22 March 2013 for the following list of services: Class 41: Organisation of Beauty Pageants and Competitions 2) Miss World Limited (“the opponent”) opposes all of the services listed on the basis of Section 5(2)(b) of the Trade Marks Act 1994 (“the Act”). The opponent relies on four earlier marks. Earlier mark 1278551 MISS WORLD puts the opponent in no better position than when it relies upon its Community Trade Mark (CTM) 151282 and therefore, I will make no further mention of it. The remaining three earlier marks are detailed below: Mark & other relevant details Services relied upon CTM 4984928 Class 41: Organisation and running of MISS BIKINI WORLD contests; beauty contests; ....
