Searchitrg,Findings and Conclusion

From my early childhoodmemones I understoodthe motherof my grandfather,Hany Mclean Thompson, born rn PickensCounty in October1868, was SallieDillard who 'l-hornpson married GeorgeMcDulfie soonafter the civil war. I had a strong determinationto learnmore about Salle Dillard aftermy Mother,Faye Thompson Woodard, gave me somc personalarticles that had belongedto my GranddadThompson. The items had beenin the possessionof her sister,Clara ThompsonKiser; until her death in 1988,at SulphurSprings, Hopkrns County, Texas.

Among the items was a letter written by B. IJolder,to my GranddadHarry Thompson, datedApril 7, l9l 5. The letterhad been placed in anotherenvelope with the notation; "For safe-keeping"."Grand Father's only letterwritten in 1915,at the ageof 90 yrs, He 'fhompson-- died 3 yrs later". Signed,H. 1925.This wasthe first time for me to leamof a great, great, grandfather by the nameof Holder. The letter written in pencil on narrow, ruled, and thin tablet papergavc us somegood clues. From the contentswe supposedhe was a man who had spentmany yearssaving souls and expressedhis pleasureto learn GranddadThompson was also trying to do the same.

Otherimportant clues were dates, when he celebratedhis 90'hbirthday, and enclosing "MY MOTTO," which enhancedour beliefthat he wasa preacher. We knew the Thompson-Gainesfamily historvhad its beginnrngin upstateSC, so we startedour researchwith a censusof, Pickens Countv.

Who was B. tlolder andhow did SallieDillard fit into this puzzle? After searchingfor severalyears we are confidentthe answerhas been fbund. Due to limited space,we will be unableto go into detarlof eachcontributing factor of our conclusion.

We prepareda trmelinefiom numeroussources including the letter,U. S. Censusrecords at the FederalArchives in Foft Worth: BaptistCourier Recordsfrom FurmanUniversity; The Twelve Mile RaptistAssociation Records and SouthCarolina Baptist Annual ConventionRecords from I'he FlerningLibrary of SouthwesternBaptist Seminaryin Fort Worth; A book of excerptsfiom the KeoweeCourier Newspaper found in the Fort Worth Public Library. SeconaBaptist Church Records,on microfilm, borrowedfrom The Latter Day Saints,in Salt Lake, Utah. Our sourcesinclude partial Bible recordsof an unknown Dillard Family publishedin an OPD newsletter. We researchedConfederate States recordsat Hill College,Hillsboro, Texas. Also a letterfrom Harr)'Thompsonto his uncle Jeff, inquiring of B. Holder. The DeathCertificate of B Holder with the information furnished, for the certificate.by a son.Jefferson Davis Holder. Thesesources, when consideredas a whole, provide factsof the life of Beniamin l-uther Holderfiom conceptionto his death.

.Ourfirst effort wasresearching a PickensCounty, SC censuswhere we determinedthe "B" was fbr Benjaminand his occupationwas, "Farmer and BP. " Our next trip took us to LDS Family ResearchCenter, in Fort Worth, where a helpfulvolunteer suggested he could havebeen a l3aptistPreacher. Although this struckus asbeing strange" since mv GrandfatherThompson and his dadrvere Methodist Ministers. Additionally, rny great. greatGrandfbther, Charles Thompson, married Mahalia Gaines, who camefiom a tarnilr of severalMethodist Ministers. However, we decidedto pursuethe Baptist preacher route.

Our researchrevealed Benjarnin Luther Holder, born March 25, 1825in the Greenvrllc District, was the out of wedlockson of BenjaminHagood. Ben Holder'smother was SallyHolder, an employeeof Col. BenjaminHagood at a hotelrestaurant located at the top of CaesarsHead Mountain. Our trmelineindicates Ben Holderwas conceived.just daysprior to BenjaminHagood's marriage to AdelineAmbler, in .luli' 1824.Flen jamin F{agood,a wealthyperson. had been a colonelin the SouthCarolina Militia. Ilen Holder attendedthe GreenvrlleAcademy as a youngster.

On September30, 1843at the ageof eighteen,Ben Holderjorned the SeconaBaptist Churchby experience.According to the Churchminutes of August31, 1844.aftcr a sermonby ElderE. H. Griffrn, who wasapparently instrumental in bringinga voteof the churchbody, "the churchmet andtook up the caseof BenjaminHolder, and agreed to excludehim from the churchfbr disobeyingthe authorityof the church.Parted in peacre' We believethis exclusionwas the resultof BenjaminHolder fathering a yet to be born child out of rvedlock. As a youngman, age nineteen years, he fathereda daughter.Sarah A., bornSeptember 25,1844. 'I'he motherof SarahA [Sallie]was SarahStephens Dillard. Her husband,'l'obias(iibson (Gip) Dillard.gave the child the Dillard name. The partialBible recordsdo not include fhe Dillard'smarriage date. The Bible recordsdo showfive previousbirths to Sarahand TobiasDillard Our timelineindicates she was forty five yearsof age, while Ben I lolder wasnineteen when the meetingtook placein December1843.

BenjaminHolder began attending other area Baptist churches. About 1850,at the ageof twenty-fiveyears, he marriedMelinda Effeline Ferguson, daughter of Jamesand Anna DeanFerguson. Ben Holderwas ordained in 1851,apparently by the Mount Grove BaptistChurch, where he wasa memberat the time.

The minutesof the SeconaBaptist Church located in PickensCounty, SC indicateBen Holder was re-admitted,to churchmembership, almost nine yearsafter being dismissed. "ln a churchbusiness meeting on June4, 1853after a serrnonby Bro. Blythe, and after BenjaminHolder camebefore the churchstating he had receivedforgiveness. The church restoredhis fellowship.B. Holderrejoined." Ben Holderwas 28 yearsof ageat the time. Ren Holder and his family were active in the SeconaBaptist Church were he was ordainedasanElderatachurchconferencein1855.In l856,attheageof3lyears,heis recordedas pastorof Mt. CarmelBaptist Church.

Ben [.{older, like many others, enlisted in the serviceof the ConfederateStates. During the Civil War he servedas a FirstLt. andChaplin in "F" Company,First Cavalry, and Captainof Sharpshootersfrom Nov.1, 186 I to Nov. 2, 1862when he wasdischarged at Ii.ichmond,VA.

BenlaminHolder lost Malinda. his wife andthe motherof their elevenchildren: Sarah, Rebecca"Margaret, Annie, Jefferson Davis, Adaline, Benjamin Leander, James, Melvin, [-lllian and Frances. The deathoccurred on September15, 1885,and shervas buried at SeconaBaptist Church cemetery. He marriedRebecca Frances Kennemer, ljebruary 18, | 888 T'hedaughter referred to in his lettermust be Eva Gertrudc.born .lanuary17. 189.1.

In an articlepublished December 22,1910 in THE BAPTISTCOUlllER, Rev.Benjamin l.uthcr Holderis quoted asstating "The Lord hasalways blessed mv labors.and I want The l-ordto pull the harnessoff,, not man".
