3 1_4_Intro_Sis_Guineana18 03/11/12 19:59 Página 4 A. Secilla ABSTRACT Secilla, A. 2012. The family Ceramiaceae sensu lato in the coast of Bizkaia. Guineana 18: 1-369. Departament of Biology and Ecology. Faculty of Science and Technology. University of the Basque Country. PO Box 644 48080 Bilbao, Spain. The family Ceramiaceae (Rhodophyta), is one of the groups of red seaweeds widely represented throughout temperate and subtropical coasts, and this work includes a detailed study of this family on the coast of Biscay, northern Spain. In the study group we have distinguished 67 species and 1 subspecies, representing 16 tribes, and 26 genera. For all species a complete description, together with synonyms, ecology, chorology, previous records for Biscay, global distribution and an identification key are given. Furthermore, it is provided an original iconography of 432 drawings in 159 plates, which presents details of the vegetative and reproductive characters of each species. One species, Antithamnionella multiglandulosa, was described as new to science during this study in Bizkaia. In addition, 11 species have been recorded for the first time in Biscay, 2 for the Cantabrian shore (Ceramium deslongchampsii, Spongoclonium caribaeum), 3 for the Iberian Peninsula (Antithamnion hubbsii, Ceramium polyceras, Griffithsia devoniensis), one for the European Atlantic (Gayliella mazoyerae) and one for Europe (Callithamniella flexilis). Of the studied taxa, 4 are species of recent introduction and establishment in our shores: 3 of Indo-Pacific origin (Antithamnion amphigeneum, Antithamnion hubbsii and Scageliopsis patens), and one of South Atlantic origin (Callithamniella flexilis). Moreover, for 4 taxa (Aglaothamnion sp. Antithamnionella sp. Ceramium sp. and Pleonosporium sp.) it has not been possible to clarify its status. It is also proposed to recognize the taxon Ceramium brevizonatum for material previously cited as Ceramium tenerrimum on this coast. 4 1_4_Intro_Sis_Guineana18 03/11/12 19:59 Página 5 Índice ÍNDICE 1. This study provides a comprehensive characterization of the chemical composition of 15 Arctic red algal species from the perspective of their practical relevance in medicine and the food industry. We show that several virtually unstudied species may be regarded as promis- ing sources of different valuable metabolites and minerals. Thus, several filamentous ceramialean algae (Ceramium virgatum, Polysiphonia stricta, Savoiea arctica) had total protein content of 20–32% of dry weight, which is comparable to or higher than that of already commercially exploited species Citation: Yanshin, N.; Kushnareva, (Palmaria palmata, Porphyra sp.). Moreover, ceramialean algae contained high amounts of pigments, A.; Lemesheva, V.; Birkemeyer, C.; macronutrients, and ascorbic acid. Lane Jason Kolbe Tatiana Rynearson Nasser H. Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2017 ABSTRACT Parasitism is a common life strategy throughout the eukaryotic tree of life. Many devastating human pathogens, including the causative agents of malaria and toxoplasmosis, have evolved from a photosynthetic ancestor. However, how an organism transitions from a photosynthetic to a parasitic life history strategy remains mostly unknown. Parasites have independently evolved dozens of times throughout the Florideophyceae (Rhodophyta), and often infect close relatives. This framework enables direct comparisons between autotrophs and parasites to investigate the early stages of parasite evolution.

Fredericq 2019. The marine macroalgae of Cabo Verde archipelago: an updated checklist. Arquipelago. Life and Marine Sciences 36: 39 - 60. An updated list of the names of the marine macroalgae of Cabo Verde, an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean, is presented based on existing reports, and includes the addition of 36 species. The checklist comprises a total of 372 species names, of which 68 are brown algae (Ochrophyta), 238 are red algae (Rhodophyta) and 66 green algae (Chlorophyta). New distribution records reveal the existence of 10 putative endemic species for Cabo Verde islands, nine species that are geographically restricted to the Macaronesia, five species that are restricted to Cabo Verde islands and the nearby Tropical Western African coast, and five species known to occur only in the Maraconesian Islands and Tropical West Africa. Two species, previously considered invalid names, are here validly published as Colaconema naumannii comb. nov. and Sebdenia canariensis sp. nov.
