2018 Summer Programs Prince George’s County Public Schools General Information

Introduction

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) Summer Programs offer students opportunities for acceleration, enrichment, credit recovery, or original credit. This 2018 Summer Programs Guide should be used to review the available options and learn how to apply. Program availability will depend on enrollment. Space is limited – apply early!

This 2018 Summer Programs Guide is available at www1.pgcps.org/summerschool/. Information in this publication may change after printing and posting. For more details, please consult with your school counselor or contact the Summer Programs Office by phone at 301-808-1124.

Registration

For credit recovery, students must obtain a registration form from the counselor at the base school. For some enrichment programs, the registration form will be available to download at www1.pgcps.org/summerschool/. Dates, times, and registration are listed in this guide under the individual summer program. Additional records may be required depending on the program.

Locations

Tuition Waivers

Tuition waiver forms are available for credit recovery programs only. Tuition may be waived by 25 percent or less of the full price of one course per student for students who are enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program only. Completed waiver forms, signed by the base school principal must be submitted at the time of registration. Only PGCPS students are eligible for tuition waivers.

Refunds

Refunds are granted to students who must withdraw during the first week of school. Requests for refunds must be submitted on the appropriate form with the original receipt to the summer school site where the student was registered to attend.

Attendance

Students having more than two (2) absences or six (6) tardies will be withdrawn and will not be eligible for credit, grade, or refund.

In accordance with the PGCPS summer schedule of opened and closed days, most programs will meet Monday through Thursday. See the individual program for scheduled meeting dates. All schools and offices are closed on June 26 for Election Day.

If the PGCPS calendar is altered, summer dates will be adjusted. All changes to dates and locations will be posted on the PGCPS website (www1.pgcps.org).

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Students must adhere to the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook. Please refer to Administrative Procedure 10101 at www1.pgcps.org/administrativeprocedures/.

Dress Code

Students must dress in a clean, neat, and safe manner. Uniforms are not required.

Progress Reports

SchoolMAX is not available during the summer for progress reports. Please email the teacher to request a progress update for credit recovery and original credit programs. There are no grades for enrichment and bridge programs.

Final Grades

Grades for credit recovery and original credit programs will be posted to SchoolMAX one week after the summer program is completed. There are no grades for enrichment and bridge programs.

Summer Curriculum

Program curriculum is developed by content-area staff and aligned with content standards.

Forms of Payment for Summer Programs

All programs accept money orders. Many accept Visa, MasterCard, or Discover Card through the MySchoolBucks online payment application. Payment may not be made by check.

Students Not Enrolled in a Prince George’s County Public School

Students outside of PGCPS are eligible to enroll in credit recovery and original credit programs only. At registration, these students must submit a transcript and a letter from the school stating the credit course taken during the summer is equivalent to the credit course that is needed.

Bridge programs prepare students with the academic skills to successfully transition from middle to high school. Enrichment programs provide students with an extended learning experience. Original Credit programs offer credits that count toward fulfilling requirements for graduation. Credit Recovery allows middle and high school students the opportunity to earn previously attempted credits to meet promotion or graduation requirements.

Adelphi Judy P. Hoyer Center Extended Year

Program The Adelphi Judy P. Hoyer Learning Center will provide a five-week Description summer school enrichment program for prekindergarten and kindergarten students. The purpose of the program is to provide high quality instruction in literacy and mathematics as well integrating science, social studies, social foundations, arts, and physical development in the learning.

Who Should Apply Students who are enrolled in prekindergarten and kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year at Cool Spring Elementary School are eligible for this program. The program will be held at Mary Harris “Mother” Jones Elementary School due to construction at Cool Spring Elementary School.

How to Apply Register at Cool Spring Elementary School for prekindergarten or kindergarten. All entering prekindergarten and current prekindergarten students at Cool Spring Elementary School are eligible for the program. A limited number of slots are available for current kindergarten students.

Early Childhood: Jump Start to School Readiness

Program The Early Childhood: Jump Start to School Readiness is for children Description ages four and five who will be entering prekindergarten and kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year. To attend school at Carmody Hills and Samuel Chase Elementary Schools. The summer program is designed to give students exposure to daily instructional experiences that will support the student's transition into prekindergarten and kindergarten in the fall.

Who should apply Prekindergarten students who are currently enrolled at Carmody Hills and Samuel Chase Elementary Schools who need support with school readiness skills, based on classroom assessments and teacher referrals.

How to apply Early Childhood teachers at Carmody Hills and Samuel Chase elementary schools will provide recommendations for participation in the program based on criteria of needs derived from report cards and teacher recommendation.

Transition to Kindergarten School Readiness

Program The Early Childhood Office will offer a summer program for students who Description were enrolled in Prekindergarten during the 2017-2018 school year and will be transitioning to Kindergarten. The summer program aims to provide high-quality academic learning opportunities to children working to master essential skills in language, literacy, math and social emotional development in order to demonstrate school readiness upon entry to kindergarten.

Who Should Apply Students who were enrolled in Prekindergarten during the 2017-2018 school year that will be transitioning to Kindergarten working to master essential skills.

Credit Recovery Middle School

Program The credit recovery middle school summer school program provides Description instruction for students in need of credit recovery in Reading/English Language Arts (R/ELA) and Mathematics.

Who Should Apply Reading: This program is designed for current 7th and 8th graders who are reading below grade level as determined by their end-of-year Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) and/or failing R/ELA grades. Mathematics: This program is designed for current 7th and 8th graders who are struggling with specific mathematics concepts. Eligibility will be determined by mathematics assessment data and/or failing math grades.

Professional School Counselors will notify parents of students who are selected for the summer school program.

STEM Middle School Project Summer Program

Program The STEM Middle School Project Summer Program is for selected Description students entering Oxon Hill Middle School and Thomas Johnson Middle School to assist them with the transition from elementary to middle school. Through the use of hands-on, minds on STEM activities, students will be supported as they develop skills and processes that will prepare them for success in middle school and beyond.

Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Technology Bridge

Program The Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Technology Bridge program is Description designed to assist incoming Aerospace program students at DuVal High School with the transition from middle to high school. Students will participate in science, math, technology, and study skills sessions. The program will include several hands-on activities and labs. Students will work together to complete a group project. Students will be able to make real- world science and engineering connections by attending a research institution.

Who Should Apply Any incoming 9th grade Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Technology Program student at DuVal High School.

Academic Validation: High School Assessment

Program The Bridge Plan for Academic Validation is an optional program available Description for students who are having difficulty passing the LSN Government High School Assessment. The program has been developed by the State Board of Education and will be administered by Prince George’s County Public Schools. Students will have an opportunity to complete one or more LSN Government projects during the four-day summer program. Students must be rising seniors or potential August 2018 graduates.

Who Should Apply In order to be eligible for the program, students must meet the following criteria: ● currently enrolled in and passing all classes needed for graduation; ● attending school regularly according to the attendance policy; ● have completed all other graduation requirements; ● be classified as a rising senior in high school; and ● be a potential August 2018 graduate only in need of one or two projects to complete graduation requirements.

Coding as a Second Language (CSL) for High School

Program Coding as a Second Language (CSL) is a national initiative that works toward Description introducing youth to computer science and making technical training and careers accessible to women and other minorities. CSL connects programmers and tech professionals with students to prepare them for jobs in the tech industry. Participation in CSL allows students to develop in the areas of creativity, innovative thinking, problem-solving, and working with others to solve issues.

Credit Recovery and Original Credit High School

Program The Credit Recovery and Original Credit program provides an Description opportunity for currently enrolled high school students to take courses in traditional classroom settings during the day and/or in the evening for original credit (enrolled in course for the first time); repeat credit (course repeated); and non-credit (for review or enrichment). Graduation at the end of the program is available for eligible students.

Who Should Apply Students currently enrolled in Grades 9–12 interested in original or repeat credit in high school courses through a traditional classroom program.

How to Apply With the assistance of the Professional School Counselor, eligible students must complete a Student Registration and Grade Report Form and pay by Master Card, Visa, or Discover Card only, or money order at the time of registration.

Prince George’s County Public School students eligible to graduate at the end of Summer 2018 must also present a Certification of Graduation Form, along with an official transcript, High School Assessment scores, and Student Service-Learning hours at the time of registration. Failure to register will result in ineligibility to participate in the summer graduation ceremony and receive a PGCPS high school diploma.

Educational Online Program: Blended Learning Online Credit Recovery

Program Blended Learning programs allow students to continue their Description education by accessing coursework conducive to their individual schedules in an online and flexible classroom environment. It is important to note, that these courses follow an accelerated schedule, weekly assignment deadlines, regular participation, and can be more rigorous than an actual high school classroom. It is imperative that students remain self-motivated, disciplined, and consistent, and ensure that assignments and requirements are completed on time. Dedicated students can complete their coursework at an accelerated course if determined and hardworking.

Who Should Apply Students currently enrolled in Grades 9-12 interested in repeating credit in high school courses through a blended learning online course meeting at home schools or nearby.

How to Apply With the assistance of the Professional School Counselor, eligible students must complete a Student Registration and Grade Report Form and pay by Master Card, Visa, Discover Card only, or money order at the time of registration.

Program JROTC Cadet Officer Leadership Program (COLP) is designed to prepare Description second and third year cadets for leadership positions within their respective JROTC units. Cadets are challenged mentally and physically to develop their abilities to lead, follow, and apply newly acquired skills in practical situations.

Summer Melt and College Preparation Boot Camp

Program The College Preparation Boot Camp is geared toward rising Prince Description George's County High School seniors. This boot camp will provide students with a robust opportunity to engage in college exploratory activities such as completing a college application, writing a college entrance essay, learning about the college entrance process through SAT and ACT preparation, and identifying how to pay for college.

Who Should Apply Rising seniors who want to be deeply entrenched in the college entrance experience.

CTE Career Explorers Summer Camp

Program The purpose of the CTE Career Explorers Summer Camp experience is Description to provide students with the opportunity to discover their passion in up to two of twelve industry concentrations of their choice. Through industry exposure, skill development, and project-based learning with educators and industry professionals, students will learn how to match their career interest with CTE pathway programs and high school programs within PGCPS. At the end of this program, students will formally present their career development plans and industry projects in a capstone fashion.

This two-week program is the first step in assisting students to make a more informed decision regarding their future educational and career options.

Who Should Apply Rising ninth and tenth grade students of PGCPS. All applications are accepted on a “first-come, first- served basis.” To ensure that students with disabilities graduate college, career, and community-ready, this camp will provide a continuum of services, specialized instruction, and related services.

M-NCPPC Teen Adventure Camp @ Camp Schmidt

Program This camp is a partnership between Camp Schmidt and the Description Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission (M- NCPPC). Teen Adventure Camp is designed for teens and young adults ages 13-21 with disabilities who are currently enrolled in school for fall 2018. Staff to participant ratio is 1:4. Participants must be able to stay with the group, maintain behavior in a large group, and able to function independently. One-to-one assistance/supervision is not provided in this program. Activities include low/high ropes challenge courses, climbing wall, and outdoor environmental education. Note: Program activities are held outdoors on hilly, uneven natural surfaces that are not ADA accessible.

Who Should Apply Students ages 13-21 with disabilities who are enrolled in the fall of 2018. The program is limited to 35 students. Siblings are also welcome to enroll.

Nature Camp: Chesapeake Champions @ Camp Schmidt

Program This summer experience is designed for rising 4th, 5th, and 6th Description graders who are interested in environmental science. The four- day program will take students from inquiry to action answering the question “How do people impact the natural world?” Each day students will participate in hands-on, inquiry-based learning that will encourage students to make decisions that promote a sustainable lifestyle. Students will also participates in an off-site field trip.

Who Should Apply Students entering 4th, 5th, or 6th grades in 2018-2019 school year. The program is limited to 50 students.

Program The purpose of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering Summer Description Mathematics Mastery Academy is to assess, develop, and enhance students’ understanding of math at a comfortable pace to yield a sense of confidence and achieve mastery in their respective subject. Within a three-week timeline, students will concentrate on core concepts and advance their critical-thinking skills in Algebra and Geometry, while learning how to skillfully apply these skills in a timed matter for test- taking support. At the end of this program, students will be familiar with strategies to study Math and interpret the course to achieve a higher letter grade, and master mathematics concepts in their PLTW Engineering classes.

This three-week program is designed to create a foundation of mastery around a subject to adequately prepare them for future math and PLTW courses, as well as other supportive science-based classes in their schedule.

Wilderness and Outdoor Skills Camp

Program The William S. Schmidt Outdoor Education Center is offering an Description outdoor living skills camp for students entering 7th, 8th, or 9th grade in the fall of 2018. Over the course of four days, campers will learn basic camping and outdoor skills including choosing a campsite, hiking safety, assembling a tent, building, and cooking over a fire and proper food storage. Participants will camp for two nights. Activities may include knot tying, archery, building a debris shelter, identifying edible plants, team building, orienteering, and more. Come join us for a week of learning and adventure!

Who Should Apply Students entering 7th, 8th, or 9th grades in the fall of 2018. The program is limited to 20 students.

WRAIR Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS)

Program Prince George's County Public Schools in collaboration with the Walter Description Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) program invite middle and high school students to work alongside college-age mentors, called near- peer mentors, in a professional laboratory environment. During seven, one-week sessions free of charge, students will participate in a hands- on learning experience and gain exposure to the diversity of STEM careers. All students who are selected, successfully participate, and complete the GEMS sessions are eligible for an educational stipend, $100 per week.
