ARTICLE ISSN 2651 - 5210 MODULAR 2019;2(2):21-45 The Cultural Sustainability: Merzifon Anatolia College, Turkey Gizem Özerol1, Aysu Akalın2 Received: 19 November 2019 - Accepted: 17 December 2019 Abstract The article proposes an analysis of the role of American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) during the late Ottoman and the early nationalist (Republican) Turkey and focusses especially on the ABCFM organization and the role of Protestant missionaries, which they succeeded in establishing autonomous schools, hospitals, clinics, orphanages, lodgings and ateliers not only in the capitals, but also in provinces. The American Board began evangelism among Armenians, and the education and the social services became part of the Protestant movement in the Near East. Following efforts to Christianize the nations through evangelism, in the mid of 19th century, Merzifon (Marsovan) province was chosen due to its location in the middle of Anatolia and Merzifon Anatolia College was designed as an important ‘station’ in order to support the American missionary movements. Then, between the years 1886 and 1938, ABCFM built strong connections with Anatolia College in Merzifon to gain a very important strategic position. In the context of the First World War, the function of the Anatolia College buildings has changed for different aims; the military used these buildings as the Artillery Regiment. After the war the ABCFM’s network broke down but its strong contribution to present education in Turkey is inevitable. The site as a heritage is still an active part of the city’s cultural life with some existing buildings of ABCFM supporting culture and education. -

International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 4, No. 6(1); April 2014 The American Protestant Missionary Network in Ottoman Turkey, 1876-1914 Devrim Ümit PhD Assistant Professor Founding and Former Chair Department of International Relations Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Karabuk University Turkey Abstract American missionaries have long been the missing link in the study of the late Ottoman period despite the fact that they left their permanent trade in American as well as Western conceptions of the period such as “Terrible Turk” and “Red Sultan” just to name a few. From the landing of the first two American Protestant missionaries, Levi Parsons and Pliny Fisk, on the Ottoman Empire, as a matter of fact on the Near East, in early 1820, until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, American missionaries occupied the increasing attention of the Ottoman bureaucracy in domestic and foreign affairs while the mission work in the Ottoman Empire established the largest investment of the American Board of Commissionaries for Foreign Missions (A.B.C.F.M.) in the world, even above China and India, on the eve of the war. The bulk of the correspondence of the Ottoman Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the period was with the United States and this was chiefly concerned about the American mission schools. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine the encounter between the Ottoman officialdom and the American Protestant missionaries in Ottoman Turkey during the successive regimes of Sultan Abdülhamid II and the Committee of Union and Progress, the Unionists in the period of 1876-1914. -

The customary separate reviews of the several fields with locations of missionaries and descriptions of mission institutions have been omitted. The material for preparing such narratives and tabulation from the Turkey fields is for obvious reasons very incomplete and in adequate. In place of these separated accounts has been inserted the Survey of the Fields prepared by the Foreign Department and presented at the Annual Meeting in Marietta, Ohio, last October. The high cost of printing and the increased pressure upon those in charge of ad ministering the Board’s work in these disturbed years have re-enforced the decision to issue a curtailed report for 1920. Critique: Critical Middle Eastern Studies (Spring 2003), 12(1), 25–41 Appropriating Islam: The Islamic Other in the Consolidation of Western Modernity ELIZABETH SHAKMAN HURD* It is nearly impossible to find a contemporary map of the Mediterranean. Maps of southern Europe are easy to find, and one can purchase maps of Palestine, Israel and Egypt. North African maps, as well as continental African maps, abound. Maps of the Middle East, defined as Turkey, Egypt, and the countries to their east as far as the Indian border, are less prevalent, but available. Historical maps of the entire Mediterranean basin, of the Roman Empire, exist. Strangely, however, the only way to view the contemporary Mediterranean and surrounding countries as a whole is to look at a map of the Earth from space, in which political boundaries are invisible, trumped by the wide expanse of the Mediterranean, the ‘boot’ of Italy, and the stark contrast of the North Africa desert. This situation is not coincidental. It is symptomatic of a worldview that reinforces the perception of distance between the West and the Islamic world. It is a view that ‘serves to marginalize the Mediterranean world and accentuate the ancient break between its south-east and north-west.’1 It reinforces opposition between the West and Islam by postulating irreconcilable differences between them. Fawaz Gerges has attested to the power of this mindset in the Arab world today: My own generation—people in their 30s and 40s—has also been socialized into an anti-American mindset, which is difficult to critique or deconstruct. America, it is often claimed, conspired to humiliate and dominate the proud Arabs by corrupting their local elite and empowering their hostile neighbors. -

Two paradigms emerge: the married woman who tried to embody the ideals of True Womanhood while helping her missionary husband, maintaining home and children, and serving local women and children in myriad ways; and the single woman who took on missionary work as a professional career to teach, provide health care, administer, and model Anglo-American ideals. -

NEGOTIATING THE FIELD : AMERICAN PROTESTANT MISSIONARIES IN OTTOMAN SYRIA , 1823 TO 1860 Christine Beth Lindner A THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY University of Edinburgh 2009 In loving memory of my grandmother, Sophie Jaekel ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines the work of the missionaries from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) and the rise of a Protestant community in Ottoman Syria, from the commencement of the missionary station at Beirut in 1823, to the dissolution of the community in 1860. The primary goals of this thesis are to investigate the history of this missionary encounter and the culture of the new community. This analysis is guided by the theoretical framework of Practice Theory and employs gender as a lens to explore the development of the Protestant identity. It argues that the Protestant community in Ottoman Syria emerged within the expanding port-city of Beirut and was situated within both the American and Ottoman historical contexts. The social structures that defined this community reflect the centrality of the ABCFM missionaries within the community and reveals a latent hierarchy based upon racial difference. However, tensions within the community and subversions to the missionaries’ definition of Protestantism persisted throughout the period under review, which eventually led to the fragmentation of the community in 1860. The contribution of this thesis lies in its investigation onto the activities of women and their delineation of Protestant womanhood and motherhood, as an important manifestation of Protestant culture. This work demonstrates the centrality of women to the development of the Protestant community in Ottoman Syria and reveals the complex interpersonal relationships that defined this missionary encounter. -

AMERICAN PROTESTANT MISSIONARY BEGINNINGS IN BEIRUT AND ISTANBUL: POLICY, POLITICS, PRACTICE AND RESPONSE Habib Badr Introduction There exists today in Lebanon and Syria two small communities of Reformed Protestants that owe their formation to nineteenth cen- tury American missionary activity in the Middle East: one Arabic speaking and another Armenian. The Arabic speakers are of course the original inhabitants of the land who come for the most part from a Greek Orthodox background, while the Armenians migrated to Syria and Lebanon en masse from the Ottoman Empire after the massacres committed against them by the Turks, especially those after 1915. A notable contrast in religious attitude and piety exists between the Armenian and Arab Protestants living in Lebanon and Syria. Armenian Protestants are generally more conservative in matters of faith and social behavior. For example, Armenian Protestants require new church members, young and old, to give a “testimony of Christian experience” during a mid-week service, before receiving confirmation and first communion on Sunday. Committed church members rarely, if ever, smoke or consume alcoholic beverages, and they usually dress conservatively, especially the females among them. Armenian Evan- gelical pastors generally do not wear clerical colors, thus standing out in sharp contrast when in the presence of clergy from the Gregorian ‘mother’ Church. On the other hand, Arabic speaking Protestants tend to be theo- logically and socially less conservative. The piety of the average churchgoer is reserved and confirmation classes lead automatically to church membership. Pastors almost always wear clerical colors and are hence not distinguishable from priests when in public places. -

Journal of Mediterranean Studies, 2010 ISSN: 1016-3476 Vol. 19, No. 2: 371–388 Commercial Philanthropy 371 COMMERCIAL PHILANTHROPY: AMERICAN MISSIONARIES AND THE AMERICAN OPIUM TRADE IN IZMIR DURING THE FIRST PART OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY TIMOTHY M. ROBERTS Western Illinois University, USA This article explores the interactions of American missionaries and opium traders in and around Izmir (then called Smyrna), focused on Protestant Christian evangelism of its Christian Orthodox residents, in the first part of the nineteenth century. It argues that American missionaries placed confidence in the humanitarianism of American international commerce, even commerce involving opium. Opium was the main commodity that first drew American traders to Izmir, where they bought opium and shipped it for sale in China, and on which, despite its growing controversy there and in America, they made great profits. The missionaries’ faith in ‘free trade’ helped to rationalize their efforts and focus on those Eastern Mediterranean peoples, especially Armenians, who were likewise engaged in commercial activity, in order to reform the peoples of the Ottoman Empire. In his novel, White Jacket, published in 1850, Herman Melville wrote, Americans ’bear the ark of the liberties of the world. And let us always remember that with ourselves, almost for the first time in the history of earth, national selfishness is unbounded philanthropy; for we cannot do good to America, but we give alms to the world.’1 Melville, a complex American who advocated international trade as a source for democracy but condemned missionaries, actually would have found some common ground with Rufus Anderson, secretary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, the largest American missionary organization in the nineteenth century.
